The guy on offense in the SEC who’s impressed me the most with his all-around play this season has been Alabama running back Mark Ingram.
So much so that I put Ingram among my top 5 Heisman Trophy candidates this week.
Granted, he’s only fourth in the SEC in rushing, averaging 109.8 yards per game. But he impacts the game in so many different ways. He’s tied for the Alabama receiving lead with 17 catches and is also a very good blocker.
Ingram leads the SEC with 10 touchdowns (seven rushing and three receiving). The next closest player, Tennessee’s Montario Hardesty, has seven.
What’s more, Ingram is one of only three players in the country who’s averaging more than 100 yards rushing per game and has also scored 10 or more touchdowns.
Oregon State’s Jacquizz Rodgers is averaging 116.2 yards per game and leads the country with 13 touchdowns, while Stanford’s Toby Gerhart is averaging 124.3 yards per game and has scored 10 touchdowns.
Ingram also has the kind of streak going that coaches absolutely love. He hasn’t lost a fumble in 278 career touches at Alabama. That’s 254 rushing attempts and 24 receptions.
You want to talk about ball security. Now, that’s ball security.
