⚾ 🥎 Alabama Softball Wins 2021 SEC Softball Tournament Championship

USCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama softball shut out top-seeded Florida, 4-0, Saturday night to win the 2021 SEC Softball Tournament Championship at Rhoads Stadium.

The tournament title is the sixth in program history, its first since 2012. Alabama remains the only program to win an SEC Tournament on its home field, doing so in 2021 and 2012. The win was the Crimson Tide's 44th SEC Tournament victory, tying LSU for the most of any team.

Alabama (45-7) shut out Florida (42-9) behind another masterful performance from Montana Fouts (22-3), who went the distance with 11 strikeouts. The complete-game shutout is the first since Tennessee's Monica Abbott in 2006. Fouts was named the SEC Tournament MVP, striking out a tournament-record 39 batters over her three appearances.

In addition to Fouts, Bailey Hemphill, Alexis Mack and Taylor Clark earned SEC All-Tournament accolades.

As the lower seed batting in the top of the first inning, Alabama took a three-run lead thanks to a clutch squeeze bunt from Jenna Johnson and some heads-up baserunning on a fielding error plated two more runs. An RBI single from Clark in the top of the sixth drove home the fourth and final run, with Fouts and the Tide defense holding the potent Gator offense to just three hits, all singles.

Alabama now awaits is postseason draw with the NCAA Tournament selection show Sunday, May 16 at 8 p.m. CT on ESPN2.

FROM HEAD COACH PATRICK MURPHY

"The SEC was tough this year. I think everyone will realize just how great the SEC and the level of talent is when the All-American list gets released in a few weeks. There are so many great athletes throughout the SEC and in softball, specifically. I think softball, if not number one, is the second-best sport in the SEC. The championship tradition and coaches here at Alabama are a great fraternity to be in. I heard from so many other coaches last night wishing us good luck. It is a difficult job and we wanted to do the same thing and add to the success of our other sports. That's why I love being a spring sport, it gives me an opportunity to learn from the fall and winter coaches. This team had grit and resiliency and it's been a fun group to coach."

FROM TOURNAMENT MVP MONTANA FOUTS

"Winning the tournament at home means everything after all the adversity we've faced and the injuries we've overcome this year. To us, this win signifies that anything is possible and that we can accomplish anything. It feels great to be a part of this university and for our team to contribute our own SEC championship, but we aren't done yet and we have bigger dreams."

Happy for Taylor Clark
Same here although I tired of hearing "it's her first home run at Bama" when that only applied to this season.
KB Sides owns Florida. One of my favorite UA players just based on the 2019 series at UF where she wanted to fight Kelly Barnhill after Barnhill drilled her (following a HR in her previous AB).
Barnhill. Geez, thanks. That lady skipped more than a kid playing hop-scotch when she was in the circle.

That does bring something to mind.

We'll see talk about whether Fouts can make it through OKC. While Barnhill couldn't, UF's Lauren Haeger did.

Fouts was still hitting 72mph, in her third consecutive day starting, even after having thrown 100+ pitches yesterday.

Actually 330+ pitches in 3 days...and sharper the third day than the second
How does anyone hold up after such...amazing
But bama has a long way to go...

@Brandon Van de Graaff I don't know if you've seen these or not. I ran across them this morning.

A glimpse into Montana "Outs."

Did any one else trip out when they saw Montana's dad with a sleeve of tattoos? I hadn't really thought about it before, but now I know it's coming to a point in time where we won't always be seeing the families that look like they are from Mayberry, but more of the parents with tattoos, mohawks, and piercings. Just something I noticed and realized my generation will start being the parents they show soon enough and it's gonna be interesting when a lot of interesting young decisions start showing on TV. Nothing at all against tattoos, but hopefully y'all understand what I mean.

Not Mayberry...does beat 10 count? I apologize for my “Hee Haw music” . ;););)

Kelly Barnhill
I got a call last night from a guy in Louisiana that started with, "Did you hear...!?"

Now, I don't know where I was at the time but evidently they had a bit on Saturday's broadcast about how Walton had working feverously to change their mechanics so they wouldn't have as many illegal pitches. Did you catch that?

Actually...not real sure what you meant..lol

Look at Trevor Lawrence's parents on draft night and Mac Jones' family. What some would say is the perfect looking American family. Then you see Fouts' dad with a sleeve of tattoos that doesn't even look old enough to have a ~21 year old daughter and it was just a different look is what I'm saying. Moving forward we will see more of that as a lesser conservative generation with their bodies is about to be the image plastered on tv as their kids are becoming of age in televised sports.

All that being said, I understand tattoos aren't a last twenty year thing. Lord knows I've watched enough Ink Master and other shows on the history of it all, and it's start with Naval enrollees back in the day. Just saying it took me by surprise and let me know that traditional parental look we are used to seeing on tv is probably going to change. That in no way was slamming the guy at all (as I enjoy tasteful tattoos and art), just verbally saying what I noticed.

Didn't hear that, but for whatever reason, it seemed like a lot fewer illegal pitches were called this year (in games that I watched).

Remember that horrendously called game against ARK? The one where the foul off Jenkin's foot was missed. The one where Murphy was warned in the 1st and booted in the 6th? The one with the unbelievably inconsistent strike zone. The one where the umpire allowed an extended meeting between pitcher and catcher and then had a giggle fit with them before breaking it up? Well, Danny Bowman, the home plate umpire for that game is no longer officiating in the SEC. He has been in the BIG12 since that weekend. If you also notice, Diefel didnt coach the next weekend.
