Jalen Hurts made some pointed comments about his situation and sounded off on rumors about a possible transfer.

Jalen Hurts played the role of the aggrieved quarterback on Saturday at Alabama's Media Day.

Speaking to reporters for the first time since the night he lost the grip on his role as starter during the national championship victory over Georgia in January, Hurts expressed frustration with his situation and the fact that the university tried to muzzle him as speculation about his status with the team mushroomed.

"They didn't want me to talk for whatever reason," Hurts said. "I get the opportunity to speak now. I've always tried to handle situations like this and handle speaking the best way that I can because at the end of the day I'm representing myself and I'm representing my family back home.

Hurts, who is competing Tua Tagovailoa to retain his position, never mentioned the Hawaiian sophomore during an interview session that lasted less than seven minutes.

But Hurts did say he was shocked by the comments Nick Saban made during SEC Media Days, when the head coach told reporters he was unsure if the junior quarterback, who has gone 26-2 the past two seasons, would be with the team for the opener against Louisville.

"Well, I have no idea," Saban said then. "I expect him to be there."

Hurts was taken aback by that comment.

"I told him in June that I'd be here," Hurts said. "I told him, and I told him in June, that I'd be here. It was never a decision that had to be made in regards to me leaving. That was something that the general media placed on me and I kind of never said it. With that, I told him 'I told you already that I'd be here.' I'm about to graduate in December so why leave? Even though I'm not in a situation in which I think I should leave, I'm here. Why do that when you're only 15 credits, 15 hours away from graduation?"

Hurts acknowledged there was a communication breakdown within the program, in part, because the coaches never solicited his feedback during the spring.

"No one came up to me the whole spring, coaches included, no one asked me how I felt," Hurts said. "No one asked me what was on my mind. No one asked me how I felt about the things that were going on. Nobody asked me what my future held."

Based on his own assumptions, Hurts came to his own conclusion that Saban and his staff weren't "bold enough" to address those topics and wished the whole controversy would disappear altogether.

Quietly, Hurts instead watched as the story about Alabama's quarterback competition grew bigger and bigger -- much to Saban's chagrin.

Even on Saturday, Saban bristled when he was asked about the Hurts-Tagovailoa battle. Hurts, meanwhile, told the reporters in his midst that he wasn't looking over his shoulder or "worried about anybody else."

"This is a situation that is uncontrollable," he later explained. "Coaches can't control this situation. They dictate who plays. But as far as variations to it, they don't control it honestly. This whole spring ever since the game, they kind of wanted to let it play out.

They kind of, I guess, didn't think it was a thing or tried to let it die down like it wasn't something there because it has always been the elephant in the room."

And now Hurts is talking about it, telling his side of a story that has captured the nation's attention.

Alabama QB Jalen Hurts sounds off on transfer speculation, QB competition

Just doesn't sound like Jalen is happy. You can feel some of the resentment in his tone and wording. He pretty much implied he's been put on lockdown with the media and doesn't like it. I certainly get why Saban didn't like being put in the situation Jalen's dad put him in with his public comments, but win, lose or draw I'm surprised that coach Saban hasn't continued to communicate with Jalen about his role with the team.

TUSCALOOSA – The challenger (Tua Tagovailoa) and the incumbent (Jalen Hurts) are competing hard daily to be the starting quarterback on the 2018 Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Both spoke to the media Saturday at the Tide’s annual Media Day. Both had some interesting thoughts on the competition.
Let’s start with Hurts, who did not mince words.

Hurts was queried about Nick Saban's saying at SEC Media Days that he wasn't sure if Hurts would be on the roster for the season opener. Hurts replied:

"I was kind of shocked that he said that. ... I told him like I'll tell you today, that I'm going to be here. ... Why (transfer) when you're 15 hours away (from graduating)?ā€

Asked about the competition to start, Hurts said:

ā€œIt’s definitely a situation I’ve been in before as far as a competition, and I think I’ll take the same approach that I did coming into my freshman year. Just locked in on what I need to do. Definitely not looking over my shoulder. I’m not worried about anybody else. I’m just worried about me, Jalen Hurts, being the best player that I can be, being the best quarterback that I can be.ā€

On the off-season transfer talk, Hurts was blunt:

ā€œI think there’s been a lot of rumors, a lot of speculation about things that have gone on this summer. And the funny part for me is it’s a lot of people made decisions for me. It’s actually good to see y’all (media) guys. I kind of feel like I’ve been hiding from y’all. But there’s been a lot going on, a lot of things being said. Everybody has something to say, everybody has an opinion. But the funniest thing about all that is I never said a thing. I kept my mouth closed, didn’t say anything to anyone and regardless, people are believing things that are said. It’s hard to believe somebody that their No. 1 (Hurts himself) source didn’t say anything.

ā€œI just brush it off. Like I said, it’s funny to me. That’s all I say. I mean that’s the world we live in, that’s the reality of it. Like I said, ever since the national championship game, people have counted me out. People have said I’m going to go to Texas or whatever it is … I mean the list goes on. But regardless of what people say, I’m still here. As far as I’m concerned, my job is to be the best quarterback I can be, and that’s what I strive to do every day.

ā€œI know I have a lot of supporters, I have a lot of followers and I have a lot of people watching me at all times. And with the success that I’ve had here in my first two years, I’ve built a brand for myself, and I’ve tried to represent this university in the best way I can. I’ve stayed out of trouble, made good grades and doing all those things.ā€

Tua Tagovailoa during spring practice

Tagovailoa, in typical Hawaiian style, was more laid back in his seven- minute media chat.
He began by saying his injured hand that cost him most of spring practice is fine.

ā€œI’m getting better with it,ā€ he said. ā€œThe last month, it’s been good.

ā€œ(The injury) gave me a good amount of time to rest and just focus mentally on plays and protections. I think it was kind of good, but I learn a lot better by doing than just watching.ā€

Then came the competition question and an interesting answer.

ā€œFor me, I’m not really focused on winning the job,ā€ Tua said. ā€œI don’t think that’s ever been in my persona. I think what we have to do as a team is what’s most important to me. We’ve got to focus on what we can do now to better ourselves.

ā€œAs the season goes on, we’ll see. We’re just focused on bettering ourselves as a team and preparing for the first game. We’re looking at how we can identify ourselves this year.

ā€œ(Hurts and I) don’t talk about any ā€˜quarterback controversies’ at practice. Me and Jalen don’t even bring it up. As far as this season, we’re just looking at getting each other better.

ā€œThere’s no negative contingencies. We don’t’ go into games thinking, ā€˜Oh. I might not start.’ We want to be positive, because the team looks at that. The team at what we say to the media, as well.

ā€œI just don’t want anything to ruin our relationship. I don’t think anything between me and Jalen is bad.ā€

Asked about the interview he did in Hawaii where he was quoted about transferring if he hadn’t played against Georgia, Tagovailoa said, ā€œI think it was taken out of context. That was in May. This is (August), and what we’re trying to focus on now is our season ahead.ā€

Tua was told about Saban’s earlier remarks about using everyone who can help, but not using the term ā€œtwo quarterback system.ā€ He agreed:

ā€œI think that’s the way we all need to look at it, ā€œTua said. ā€œWhatever’s going to help benefit the team is going to be what’s right. Coach Saban and his staff will make the best decision for us.ā€

Tagovailoa was asked how much his life’s changed since coming off the bench to rally his team to a win in the national title game over Georgia.

ā€œIts definitely changed a lot,ā€ he said. ā€œI think that goes for anyone who’s in the spotlight. Nobody really knows about them until he performs in a big situation. I think that goes for anyone who does something at least decent on a big stage.ā€

Questioned about what he’s working most to improve on, Tua said, ā€œI think everyone has a lot of things to improve on, but for me, I’d say my biggest thing is working on my relationship with my teammates.

ā€œWe have a lot of younger guys. Helping them out getting to understand plays, getting to understand how everything works around here, and getting them going within our system. I think that’s going to help us better ourselves as a team.ā€

Tua said that one particular new receiver had caught his eye.

ā€œWe have our receivers from last year, our freshman group from last year (Henry Ruggs, Devonta Smith, and Jerry Jeudy). Now they’re sophomores.

ā€œ(True Freshman) Jaylen Waddle has been a really good asset to us as well. I think we’ll be fine as far as what we can do with our receivers.ā€

Best of luck to both guys ... it will all depend on the type of offense coach wants to have ... I have my preference , just based on the style ā€œ I like ā€œ .

But I don’t get to choose.. ROLL TIDE ...

I have always been a Hurts fan and have always thought as a competitor he would work is butt off to get better and push to win the QB position. I suspect he is doing just that but this interview did not help him in my opinion in terms of winning his teammates. Pure speculation on my part for sure since I have no knowledge of what is going on inside the athletic complex.

My opinion: I don’t like this. Looks like he thought this out and planned to make his feelings public first chance he got. Also, curious as to why he didn’t go to the staff and voice these concerns (if he did he didn’t mention it but harped on no one coming to him). All of that said, IF Saban is maneuvering to keep him around so he has an experienced backup that’s not fair.

Again, my opinion.

JMO but at this point I don't believe Nick really gives a shet what Jalen does. Based on his comments that "he didn't know if #2 was even going to be on the roster for fall". Doesn't sound like he is trying his best to keep the guy from packing his suitcase to me.

If I were writing an article I'd be real tempted to use the title, "How to lose the QB competition at Alabama on Day two."

Have to agree! Talking like this isn’t going to ā€œwin the teamā€ and it sure isn’t going to sit well with CNS. Shit! Jalen has 2 damn legs and he knows good and damn well where CNS office is. At any time from the middle of January until this weekend, he could have went to Saban and asked for some clarity on his situation. Really showed a lack of maturity.

I agree. Jalen's interview was all about him. Tua's was all about the team.

I can't even begin to imagine what Jalen's gone through in the last 10 months. Hell, I'm not sure I'd handle his situation any better and I'm 25 years older than him. His choice of words could have been better. Reminds me of that old saying, "One oh shit can erase a thousand attaboys"

Seems to me the staff and Jalen could have handled this better (based purely on what was said).

Fans and the media have been talking so much shit since the Auburn game.

If what he said is true, then maybe Saban shouldn't have expressed doubt as to whether or not he would be at Louisville game. However, after all the commitments that he's seen broken by players, especially this past signing day, you can see why Saban would be leary of believing people, especially when their parent has spoken out like Jalen's dad did, Also, Jalen calling out coaches was a bad move all around.
