📡 Alabama has nation's top scoring offense, other stat rankings

Alabama also has No. 1 kickoff return.

There are a few caveats with this one, yet it's still notable.

After three games, Alabama has the top scoring team in the nation. A program built on defensive strength has an offense scoring 56.7 points in the first three games of the 2018 season.

That's enough to edge Ohio State's 56.3 points a game for No. 1 in scoring among FBS teams.

The catch is the three teams Alabama's faced average a No. 101 ranking in total defense. Being so early in the season, the Tide's big numbers have a big impact on that scale, but it's clear these weren't top flight defenses. Ole Miss exited Saturday with the No. 127 total defense among 130 FBS teams.

It should also be noted that Alabama hasn't played its full starting unit for a full half of any game so far this season. Starting quarterback has thrown no more than 19 passes in a game this season.

Alabama will get a better test with Texas A&M and its No. 49 total defense coming to Bryant-Denny Stadium at 2:30 p.m. CT Saturday.

A few other notable national rankings:

• -- Alabama's rushing offense is No. 27 averaging 236.7 yards a game.
• -- Alabama's passing offense is No. 26 averaging 308.0 yards per game.
• -- The total offense is No. 14 with 544.7 yards per game.
• -- Thanks to Josh Jacobs, Alabama is No. 1 in the country in kickoff returns. The average there is 59.3 yards with the Week 1 touchdown and a 74-yarder Saturday.
• -- Total points this season: Alabama 170, Opponents 28.
• -- Tagovailoa's 233.3 QB rating is still No. 2 in the nation. His 12.9 yards per attempt is No. 3. And his 72.0 completion percentage is No. 11.
• -- Jerry Jeudy's six touchdown catches ranks No. 2 in the country. His 26.1-yard average catch is No. 5.
• -- On defense, Alabama is No. 24 in rushing (101.3 yards per game), No. 59 in passing (201.0 ypg) and No. 24 in total defense (302.3 ypg).
• -- The top-ranked scoring offense is paired with the No. 8 scoring defense that allows 9.3 points a game.
• -- Alabama's five interceptions are tied for No. 12.

I was looking over cfbstats last week wondering where Jalen fit in the Bama record books. By my/their count he's currently recorded 64 scores--passing and rushing.

Here's what catches my eye. Can he catch AJ? McCarron recorded 77 TD's in his career (three rushing) with leaves 13 to go.

Can Jalen account for 13 TD's this season? It would literally mean the player who broke the record did so as a back-up.

FWIW, Tua now sits at 22.

With the way we dispose of teams so early, it will be tough for records to go down since we empty the bench in the second half. Hard to break records playing half the time.

Pretty cool stats. My hope is that Jalen can get to 78+ and then Tua comes in next year and beats it.
