Shula was a pure stop gap measure. I think he actually did a fairly decent job considering the situation. I'll always have a special place in my heart for his 2005 team
I was in T’town for the 5A/6A state track and field meet that weekend. I left the Bailey complex and walked over the the Bryant Conference Center where they held the press conference. Wild times!!
Unlike most of this website, I was not born in the 1930s. I was born in 1994 and the 2005 team was the first time in my life where I saw Alabama field a team that was decent.
And yes I'm aware they had good teams in 1999 and 2002. But I was too busy watching SpongeBob to care about college football at that time

Joe Kines? He and Sparky are the only two coaches on that staff that I hold any respect towards. His defense was the 2005 team.
With a healthy Prothro and a healthy Closner that team would have still been exposed against LSU and Auburn. "So bad" is a compliment for that offensive line coaching job.
Aside from Shula, only two of the 10 coaches on the staff are still employed in football. Spark at UNC and Ball is at some directional school out west.
Funny you mention '99 ... the '05 team had a lot of bad coaches, the '99 team had a lot of bad people who were coaches. And like '05, there are two on that staff I appreciate; Stubbs and Rouzie.
I don't know what Stubbs is doing now ... last I heard Rouzie was Director of Economic Development down in Foley.
