More than 50% of exhibition executives polled in a new survey believe that the ā€œtraditional cinema experienceā€ has less than 20 years remaining as a viable business model.

The poll, conducted by analyst and author Stephen Follows in collaboration with exhibitor news outlet Screendollars, surveyed 246 U.S.-based executives in the film industry to give their opinions on the theatrical landscape’s recovery after COVID pandemic lockdowns, flexible release windowing and the future of the business amid streaming’s prominence.

When asked ā€œHow long do you expect the traditional cinema experience to remain a viable business model?ā€, roughly 55% of exhibition executives stated that they believed it had less than 20 years, giving other available answers such as ā€œless than five years,ā€ ā€œfive to 10 yearsā€ or ā€œ10 to 20 years.ā€

I’m a movie theater fan!!!! For years we would see the major motion pictures (action/scifi) type movies on opening night at the midnight showings. My brothers, a couple cousins, my son, and several of my nephews. We’d go get a late dinner (usually wings) then kinda hang out wherever then hit the movie. I’ve bought as many as 50 tix to a movie.
I’ve been to so many that I used to get invited to screen movies. I’ve actually been to 3 screenings one locally, 1 in Dallas, 1 in Atlanta. It was just to time consuming to do the out of town screenings.
