🏈 Alabama Football: Is It Time To Stop Yellow Hammer Cheer and Show More Class?

I never had the opportunity to go to college and I'm 24 years old. Guess I'm not a "real" fan then. Also, I guess I'm stuck in a perpetual state of immaturity and ignorance that magically disappears when you take a few classes at a local college and turn the age of 25.

Nah, you're good brother. The only reason I got to go in my thirties was thanks to the GI Bill. To say a real fan has to attend a univerity is the weakest argument in the land. So to be a Dallas Cowboys fan you HAVE to be from Dallas, I rest my case.

Dude no one is going up to a player and yelling it in their face. Get over it. I attended UA and I like the cheer. I attended after military service so I was an adult learner. I have a college education I graduated with honors and I still like the cheer. Where is your argument now? Again, its a GAME! Like I mentioned earlier it has been a part of Bama football as along as I have been going to games. And I went to games when some guy named Bryant was the coach.

My argument is in the same place that yours is. Assertion. You say you know nobody who doesn't like it except internet fans. I say you are an 18 year old kid. The point at which you prove to me you are over 18 is also the point at which your own statement become false - since at that point you would have met me personally and I can't stand the trailer trash ole miss hotty toddy rip-off cheer.

I stated my opinion, you attacked it in an inflammatory manner, got embarrassed in prose, and now try foul. Priceless.

You are probably angry because you can go to war and die at 18 but can't drink until you are 21.

I never attacked you, I simply stated my opinion since you attacked ALL supporters of RJ by saying they were classless and trailer trash and stated that you would beat us all up if you were a player still.

I'm 30, and Accountant drink a single beer on April 15th and thats about it for me alcohol wise.

I generally respect your opinion and vast football knowledge on this board and think you are a great asset to RTB.

You want a link to my Facebook page with pictures of me my wife and two adopted kids?

I can link you a myspace with me starring on a remake of Happy Days.

An acceptable standard of absolute proof would require a personal meeting - which would also invalidate the argument that he had never met a person in real life who didn't like the cheer. I think you missed that point.

You think I'm 18 beause I like the cheer? I said I dont personally know anyone who doesnt like the cheer. The only people I see complaining about it are on forums.

You dont like the cheer we got that. We do not have to agree with you and your hypothetical situations.

I've been attending games since I was like 9, I guess when I was 12 sitting in the nose bleeds in the Super Dome losing my voice while singing "Yeah Alabama" after watching Teague chase down and strip the ball away, I wasn't a real Alabama fan.

You don't see the contradiction?

"We are a classy fan base. A traditional power...the best tradition in all of College. We treat everyone like they should be treated"

"We just beat the hell out of you hahahahahahah!!!!"

There is nothing wrong with that? I have always thought RJ is trashy. It is my opinion and I will state that. I am not going to change it and I will dance a jig when it finally gets banned - and it will get banned.

Yes you are right. But arent alot of things in life a contradiction? Again all of this emoion about a cheer in a game.

Sure some will be happy when it gets banned, and some will be sad. Just like when Married with Children got cancelled! :(

No, I think you are an 18 year old kid because you say you have never met a person who doesn't like RJ. I could say that I am a 10' tall alien from mars and it is just as valid. The logical fallacy of straw man got tossed out earlier. What you have done by saying you have never met... is make an assertion by appeal to popularity. From an argument position it is the same as saying "Because I said so," and "it is right because lots of people say it is." You are using your lack of personal experience in not having met people to add merit to your point. That is worse than straw man in logic.

Going back to my original point with the football players walking off the field...

I see them with respect. They are fallen warriors. I respond with appreciation for the game I just had the opportunity to witness because they represented their institution.

You respond by taunting them for losing.

I take issue with that.

My argument has nothing to do with whether or not someone is a sidewalk alumnus or not. I didn't go to Alabama. I can't post on the JSU message boards even though I played for Burgess because I am a Bama fan and the JSU message boards are nasty to people who cheer for anyone other than JSU.

I feel that it is morally wrong to taunt. At best RJ is prideful.

I can't disagree with your point at all, the only problem I ever had is the way you argued it. Calling people children and implying that they are trailer trash just doesn't seem like a very logical way to go about an argument in which you're point is that what they're doing isn't classy.

You think its morally wrong to taunt, other hurt their feelings, yet you recognize physical harm as an acceptable retaliation to hurt feelings? And not two old fat guys taking girl slaps type of physical harm. You are talking a very physically fit athlete who spends hours a day with professional trainers "knocking teeth out" of someone who hurt their feelings?

You then go on to call people that sing a particular song trailer trash, uneducated, and then compare anyone under the age of 25 to be the equivalent of trailer trash uneducated people?

Yet you want to talk about morality??

I have no problems with your opinions of not liking RJ, thats your thing own it. But seriously, if you are going to get on a bandwagon against hurting feelings and taunting other teams, then you should probably refrain from name calling, and the tolerance of physical violence in retaliation to anything.

As Corso would say, "Not so fast my friend!" Or as an Army buddy used to say "Negative Ghost Rider" (I think its from a movie.

Rammer Jammer is not just a post Bryant tradition. I was a small guy in the late 70's and recall it while attending my first game in '78. Also my dad used to have this old stack of 45's (those are records for you young ones) of Alabama folk songs about Bear & the Tide. Check some of them out here:

http://www.alabamafootballsongs.com/listen.html

Where does it say "we just beat the hell out of you?"

Anyway, the track #8 Rammer Jammer, Yellow Hammer is about the '77/'78 seasons. It starts off with the line:
"Last year the Irish stold it from the Tide..."

That theme runs strong in several of those songs after the '77 season when Bama fans felt robbed. While all dont use the entire cheer they use a form of it. So as long as I can recall it has been a part of Alabama football. Traditions are added all the time and we cant just sit back and say only the Coach Bryant era stuff matters. I am sure one day the NCAA will ban it because like you said some consider it offensive.

"Rammer jammer yellow hammer give 'em hell Alabama, we're number 1 we're the mighty Crimson Tide!"

Sing it loud and proud with me. Come to the dark side! Muhahaha!

I stood on the bleachers as a kid and cheered RJYH before and after games when they played Auburn, Penn St, Notre Dame. As an adult I have enjoyed the cheer after vicotires over Auburn, LSU, UGA, Florida, and Texas. So I consider it part of my Bama tradition. I have taken friends who are grads/ fans of other schools to games and they got a kick out of it.

* BTW I am the farthest thing from trailer trash.

Where does it say "we just beat the hell out of you?"
