This my 100th post. Its a doozy
After spending a weekend with Alabama losing to Louisiana Tech Monroe, I feel that a whole season of hoping for the best has finally been granted.
Am I happy about the loss? No Way. It was like a black Friday. It was an end to the madness. Win or lose the Iron Bowl just doesn’t matter this year. If they win it will be pure luck. The wheels have come off and things have to be repaired before they can start a winning attitude.
When I became an Alabama Fan, it was an easy choice because most of the time Alabama would whip the daylights out of most of their opponents. It is harder to stay a fan today but I am sticking with it.
People like Kenny Stabler, Joe Namath, Barry Kraus, Pat Trammel, Bobby Humphrey, and scores of others will tell you that Alabama did not always have the best individual players, but they just beat you. Alabama is not famous for Heisman Trophy candidates. They were famous for beating you. Bear Bryant is mostly the reason that they beat you because he taught a oneness that moved as a team instead of individual performances. It is a circle of friends that back each other up no matter what. The Quarterback can’t play if the linemen don’t block, and the linemen can’t block if the backfield can’t run the ball. The receivers have to catch and out maneuver their opponents. If the offense can score and the defense can’t stop the scoring or vice verse then you end up with a bunch of individuals singing different songs to different tunes. It Sounds like the symphony tuning up. It is horrible. When they are one it is heavenly sweet music.
Our new Coach has to turn a group of individuals into one heartbeat. It will take a while, but more importantly as a fan I have to back the program and be there while it is getting repaired. It has been in shambles for a while. Time will tell if our new coach will be successful. If it is his mission to be the best, then his plan will work within his timetable. If he has always been a winner, then he will win. He has been there. It is unfortunate that our current group of players have not been there. They have had to endure sanctions, coaching changes, losing to Auburn for 5 years in a row, and now a new coach that is demanding perfection. It is in no way an excuse for losing, but it is background noise when you are trying to win.
He did not allow the players to play that were under investigation for the book selling thing. He is demanding things that the players didn’t have to do before he arrived. Like Mandatory workouts. He will suspend a player for breaking team rules. Sounds to me like he is on track to be the winning-est coach in history. He is on target for recruiting a top 5 recruiting class. (Number 3 at last count)
I read a book about Attilla the Hun one time and was amazed at what length he went to get production from his people. He conquered his world with fear. Fear is not a great motivator for long time motivation, but fantastic for the short time. Having your head cut off publicly was a great motivator to get the lead out. Obviously that cannot be done today, but I am sure that if it was legal and morally ethical, Home Depot would be running out of those broad axes. It would be the easy solution.
Some of these kids that play football for multi million dollar programs and do stupid things need to think further than the locker room. Look to the coach for guidance and make sure that you are not the one that needs your head cut off. You are embarking on a journey of success that will be a habit that you have to repeat and learn to insure that it is instilled in you. Some already have it when they walk through the door, but some have to be dragged along the way. The payoff is huge for your future.
When I was in boot camp, there was this guy that continued to get the whole squad in trouble day in and day out. Eventually we all had enough and had a come to Jesus meeting with him. I was sure glad that he was straightened out because I knew that our squad leader was going to kill us all if he didn’t straighten up. He ended up being a great contributor to the program.
Winning is an attitude that starts with one person and is entrusted to each friend in the circle until everyone is a believer. Until everyone is on board from the water boy to the quarterback you cannot have it. When you win everything is forgiven and the history of poor performance is forgotten. When you win without cheating or cutting corners, you start a tradition that will be easy to repeat. It has been said that the SEC is the toughest conference in the nation. To be on top in the SEC again will require a new clean slate. The University has made a change that will cause that to happen with Coach Saban. He has the best facilities, Staff, tradition, and equipment to do it with. He is the right stuff. We must support him without question. We must pay attention to the journey. Winning is a journey to enjoy not a destination to sit on our a$$.
We as fans have to embark on that journey of winning and be an Alabama fan no matter what. Enjoy the ride and look at the scenery on the downturns and help push as we are climbing the hills along the way. Winning is hard to keep going and easy to loose.
If you are a Christian, the darkest day in the history of Christ was on that black Friday he was nailed to the cross. The best day was only two days later.
Sundays Coming!!!
