🏈 Alabama Defense-2016: What are we looking at going into spring practice?

I want to say it was before the season started, I know it's been awhile since a comparison between LSU and Bama's defense ran it's course here. The one I'm remembering was about sacks; this team versus one of Saban's best.

Now, with the return of Williams and Allen, the potential this '16 defense has to "affect the Quarterback" is a bit staggering to think about. Just these two accounted for over 40% of the sacks this year (53, pretty strong season.)

This is baseball thing with me ... gotta be strong up the middle.

All true. Plus, thinking about the up and comers in Hand, Evans, Payne, Brown (with a bit more weight), and Frazier makes it pretty exciting. Can't forget Anderson either who put together a nice year as a pass rusher from outside as well.

Unless my memory is off, which happens often... Those LSU defenses ran a plethora of blitzes. Non-stop in some games. In their NC game, they sent the kitchen sink after the OK QB. What's so impressive about our D this year is the lack of blitzing. I bet most of the sacks this year came from rushing 3 and 4 guys.

If Mehki Brown added enough weight, I think he may be a factor at DE.

Also, look for Johnny Dwight (6'3", 300 pound) and O.J. Smith (6'2", 330 pound) to be in the rotation at DT. Smith was a 4 star and this is his third yr in the program.

Good call on Brown. I have to think the staff envisioned a few of the guys they recruited at Jack to grow into DE's. Some combination of Jennings, Brown, Adonis Thomas, McMillon, etc will have to end up at DE. I gave the nod to Jennings because how strongly he finished up his HS career... Huge riser before his injury. Although Brown probably has as much upside as anyone on the roster... Just a matter of how physical he can become.

When they moved Dwight to TE, he left my radar. I just can't see him in the mix for serious playing time anymore.

Really tough to accurately envision the secondary depth with the Tony Brown situation. And even if he stays, can he be counted on? I see Mo Smith as the new Geno Smith... A guy the staff trusts more than the younger talented kids. And clearly the staff liked having more pass coverage on the back end. Harrison and Burgess Becker both seem to have good reviews from the staff... Hootie may have fallen behind there.

I don't follow the recruiting thread that much, because I don't like getting my hopes up about some pigskin ogre leaning Bama and then on signing day he has a mental breakdown and scratches for the barn or, nearly as bad, Urban Cryer. So how do the defensive recruits look like coming in for this year's class?

As you look at that list @Tidestalker put up think about recruiting service rankings for a minute.

Until we hear otherwise, Brown is playing money.

Out of the 11 starters, nine were rated 5 stars. Flip Mo into the mix instead of Tony, we're looking at eight five stars and three four stars for first string. (247 Composite)

I think Payne will be solid in the middle but Frazier has GOT to step up and be that second guy behind him. Otherwise we may see OJ Smith take that #2 spot.

Im really looking forward to seeing which of the younger safeties steps up to take Geno's spot. I think Hootie really needs to make that step but you got both Burgess, Thompson, and Ronnie Harrison all waiting in the wings and I think Ronnie prolly has the inside track on that.

The front seven should be still strong and I think the secondary has a chance to special too. If we are gonna guess depth charts lol

DE: #93 Jonathan Allen

DE: #54 Dalvin Tomlinson
JACK: #56 Tim Williams/#22 Ryan Anderson
MIKE: #10 Reuben Foster

STAR: #21 Maurice Smith/#2 Tony Brown
MONEY: #27 Shawn Burgess-Becker

No insider information here, but I expect a certain DE named Johnathan Kongbo to factor into BAMA's defensive rotation.

I would love this. I know he has a "final 8" and is intrigued by us... But hopefully we can get him committed before he leaves his visit next week. There's an obvious l opportunity here and the staff has showed a clear willingness to play depth.

Think about the 'middle' for a sec - Reuben is apparently back for a last hurrah, and I hear that SD Hamilton brings the wood when he hits - I think, despite being slightly smaller, he takes over for Ragland well. He's smart, and has good fundamentals. Dillon Lee did a good job when he took the field, but with C Miller having another year under his belt, and R Evans, we'll be fine there. Tim Williams is also out to prove that he can be trusted on every down. No one will replace Ashawn, but with Hand getting better, and Allen coming back, we'll be okay. I agree that Frazier needs to step up and provide DL depth, but Tomlinson comes back, and Payne will be great next year. So overall, I think our front 7 doesn't take near as much of a hit as everyone feared. Leadership MUST come from the upperclassmen. A little less depth, perhaps, but the talent, and speed, may be a bit better than this year - which is SCARY! The speed, in fact, would be the way to beat Clemson if we could get back for a rematch!

Concerning the secondary, E JAckson is back, and at the other safety, I see Ronnie Harrison taking over for G Smith. I think it will be an UPGRADE. He's bigger, and as fast, with hopefully better fundamentals. Humphrey did well, and should improve, and I think Minkah stays at Star. He is great, but we stay in nickle a lot, and he was exposed by the frosh from Clemson playing a DB type role. I will go out on a limb and say T Brown gets his sh** together and takes the other CB slot - or maybe it's K Sheffield's time? Obviously Minkah could take the CB slot and we'd be ok with Mo Smith at star. Otherwise Mo will play money. Either way, with Pruitt coaching, and these guys returning, I say our secondary will be GREAT! There is still Burgess-Becker, and Hootie Jones trying to get playing time.

So, my take, going into spring? A hungry defense that needs to find it's signal caller at LB - does SDH take that? Can Reuben do it? The starting DL will be GREAT, and we just need to develop the depth. The secondary will be excellent, and this defense will surpass last years.

Something happened with him last night. I don't know what ... working, couldn't really communicate.

My opinion on him being a part of this class ... like holding a pair and getting three of a kind on the flop.

Another young name to watch is Greyshirt frosh Christian Bell at LB.
