Alabama athletics had a profit of $15.6 million

University of Alabama athletics continues to be profitable and football remains the driving force, according to budget documents the school files annually with the NCAA.

The school made $15.6 million more than it spent in 2017, according to the document obtained by AL.com through open records requests.

The profit was down $3.1 million from last year's $18.7 million.

Total revenue was up slightly more than $10 million to $174.3 million.

In terms of football, the profit was $45.9 million with total revenue of $108.2 million. With expenses rising last year, the profit was down $1.8 million from the 2016 report filed with the NCAA. The revenue, however, was up from $103.9 million in 2016.

For perspective, USA Today reported the University of Texas had revenue of $215 million in 2017 (compared to Alabama's $174.3 million). It was the highest revenue number in the 13 years of the newspaper's survey of athletics money, up from the previous record of $173.2 million Texas set in 2015.

With Alabama, media right and contributions continued to be the main driver of income. The TV contracts and other rights brought in $43.9 million last year.

Contributions accounted for $32.9 million. That could take a big hit in 2018 with the new tax plan passed by Congress and signed by the president. In the past, 80 percent of those contributions could be written off as charity donations.

That deduction is eliminated under the new tax plan, which will make things more difficult for athletics departments to raise money from donors.

And the rich get richer...
And when comparing Texas money and Alabama money...
Texas is Texas....that is a big rich place....
Alabama is...well...a typical southern state....

Pretty sure our profit was more than Texas' if I read the article I did earlier correctly. Think they spent around $207M. Of course they also take part in way more sports than we do, but also are the flagship university in the capital city of an oil rich state. I'd be curious to see the difference in state revenues of Texas and Alabama to even further show the amount of dedication our boosters, alumni, students, and donors have towards The Capstone. Not to mention they have like ~15,000 more students than us, therefor graduating a shit ton more, thus equaling more revenue. Sorry, I just hate Texas and their claim to most revenue, which doesn't always mean most profitable which is the better number.

too true. all they care about is the bigger number, not the one that's more true.

And more revenue dont always mean more success ...otherwise Alaska would be playing in the NC game....
Would be like....more sunshine , beaches, and bikini clad girls mean better recruiting....if both were so... it would sunshine Hawaii vs oil rich Alaska....in the NC game.... i got the Rainbow warriors by 11...
