As Alabamaās athletic director, Greg Byrne has a significant presence in the Crimson Tideās football scheduling decisions. But on Monday, Byrne revealed other names who are part of the process.
Speaking to WJOX 94.5 FM, Byrne said he and Alabama coach Nick Saban are in close contact throughout scheduling decisions. However, Alabama President Stuart Bell and the University of Alabamaās trustees also have knowledge of where things stand in discussions.
āWhen it comes to scheduling football games, Coach Saban and I are in regular conversation,ā Byrne said in the radio appearance. āObviously, I talk to President Bell about that, and our trustees.
āThey pretty much stay out of the way for us on that subject and trust us on our process, which is very nice. But usually, itās Coach and I talking about it and deciding what makes sense. And those are from neutral games to home-and-homes or games that we have people come into here and we donāt return the trip. Football scheduling is something that you spend a decent amount of time on every year, just because you always want to be paying attention to what the market is doing.ā
Recently, multiple reports have surfaced about possible marquee nonconference games for the Crimson Tide on the horizon. Notre Dame, Texas and USC have emerged as possible games for Alabama in future seasons.
Whatever the result of those talks and others, itās revealing to hear about the figures involved in these strategic decisions. The Crimson Tide havenāt been shy about scheduling big-name opponents early in the season, as evidenced by a victory against Florida State in Atlanta to open the 2017 season.
Expect Alabama to continue to be ambitious with its scheduling choices.
