🏈 Alabama #1 see going into Friday's match play: UA wins 3-0 and advances to semi's

Alabama entered the NCAA Championship as the nation’s hottest team. Some advice from some major champions helped them live up to expectations and lead after the first round of the NCAA Championship.

Alabama head coach Jay Seawell received advice from Jerry Pate and Lee Janzen on how to play Riviera, the annual site of the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open. Janzen didn’t attend Alabama, but his agent, Tommy Limbaugh, is the uncle of Alabama assistant coach Scott Limbaugh. Seawell also recorded the television coverage of the Northern Trust Open. Janzen and Michael Thompson, a second-year PGA Tour player who finished at Alabama in 2008, sent Seawell emails with hole-by-hole dissections of the course.

“They sent us their perspective on each hole,” Seawell said. “I think it’s very good for our players. We had a little checklist for each hole.”

Alabama shot 1-over 285 Tuesday and is three shots ahead of SEC foes Auburn and Florida. The Crimson Tide received a 1-under 70 from freshman Justin Thomas, the country’s No. 2 player, and even-par 71s from Bobby Wyatt and Scott Strohmeyer. Cory Whitsett and Hunter Hamrick both shot 73.

Alabama, the nation’s No. 2 team, won the SEC Championship, then posted a 25-stroke victory at the NCAA Southeast Regional. The Crimson Tide women’s team won last week’s NCAA Championship. The men are trying to repeat the feat.

It's my understanding Friday will be #1 vs #8, #2 vs #7, and so on.

I briefly searched around the net this morning looking for anything I could find on the NCAA sites that went over the rules. I didn't find anything in the limited time I spent looking. I do wonder how they handle tie-breakers.

I'm guessing when a coach turns in his lineup he has his #1, #2, #3 and goes down the list. If one teams' #2 has a higher round than the other they are out? Considering a team fields five, and only counts four, I'm not sure how that works.

I know it is the top 8 that advance, but looking at the leaderboard going into today you can see where the confusion comes in. Outside the two teams tied at #4, there's five at #8 today.

Florida State and Kent State finished tied for the eighth and final spot. They will return Friday morning and all five team members will play sudden death with the best four scores counting.

Winner faces the Tide.

Yah. I finally took the time last night at work to look it up.

From NCAA.org's Championship handbook.

Finals. All 30 teams and six individuals will complete 54 holes of stroke play. Following
54 holes of competition, an individual champion will be declared along with finishers
2-15. The top eight teams after 54 holes of play will be placed into a bracket with the
number one seed playing the number eight seed, the number two seed versus the number
seven seed, the number three seed versus the number six seed and the number four seed
versus the number five seed competing in match play. A total of five points will be
available with one point being awarded for each individual match. Winning teams
will advance to the semifinals and subsequently the finals. The first team to win three
points within the team match will advance, or in the case of the final match be declared
the national champion. Once a team has won three individual matches, any remaining
individual matches will be halted at that point with the individual match recorded as
it currently stood. Lineups, for pairing purposes, in the match play portion of the
championship will be determined by the Golfstat ranking which will include all results
from throughout the year, including both regionals and finals. Official NCAA awards
will be presented to the first four teams and first 15 individuals. At the completion of
54 holes the field will be cut to the low 8 teams. Ties for the top eight will be broken by
a sudden-death playoff or, if necessary, by the non sudden-death tiebreaking procedure
set forth in Appendix A. Pairings for both the stroke play and match play portion of the
finals will be set forth as in Appendix D. Ties for such pairing positions will be broken
according to the non-sudden death tiebreaking procedures set forth in Appendix A.

Assuming we win today, we'll face the winner of San Diego State vs Cal.

Our best round to date has been +3. Washington did the same in their third round yesterday.

San Diego State's best round has been +4.

IF we get through today, we'll have a tough row to hoe.

Here's hoping the sudden death playoff for #8 takes a few holes and a lot of energy from the winner. On the other hand, it's a good way to warm up for another round.

I'd also imagine we could find a few from the PGA and LPGA that have played it quite a few times as well—and still haven't broken par. :untroubled:

In stroke play, I'd say that should be an advantage. Match play?

They played a lot like our softball team: up early and didn't let go.
