🏈 AJC Reporting UGA Has Hired Kirby

Don't worry about Cochran leaving. He has some proteges that recently moved on to other schools that can come back and we won't miss a beat on strength and conditioning. The one staff member we cannot lose is Bo Davis. Don't know if he is interested in becoming a DC, but at least double his salary to keep him.

I'd have to put Burton Burns in there with Bo Davis.

I may be missing something but St Mark is supposed to be staying on at UGA to coach the bowl game, not sure that Kirby will be gone right after the SECCG. I expect him to stay on until the run is over if Bama beats UF. I would assume he would work on staff assembly during that time but continue as DC.

@TerryP How many practice sessions are allowed between the SECCG and the first round of the playoffs?

Unless they recently changed it, there is no limit. Typically Bama does about 14.

Cochran is cool but there are tons of energetic meat heads out there that can motivate 18-22 yr old kids to lift weights.

Kirby on the other hand will really hurt. Saban will have some work on his hands... However, knowing Saban's ego, I think he looks forward to showing people that afterall this is his scheme.

Kiffin will be leaving too... But I think Saban will look forward to that lol

And that's the thing people miss. This is Saban's defense. It always has been.

Mel Tucker was a DC in the NFL from 2008 - 2014. If Kirby leaves early (which I hope not and if we make it to the playoff) I think between Mel and CNS there's enough experience to call defensive plays and make adjustments with three weeks to prepare.

I'd like to wish Coach Smart the best of luck as he begins, hopefully, a long head coaching career. Of course, that does not count when he plays Alabama. Coach Saban will hire or promote from within the best person for the job of DC.

While coaching HS ball in the area here for several years, I had the privilege of working several Bama football camps. Talked with Kirby several times. Great dude, down to earth.

In working toward my Phys Ed certification, I had to study a semester of Special Ed, per state requirements. The practicum for that class for me was working at the RISE center. For those that aren't familiar, they take special needs preschool kids, and begin preparing them for public school by integrating them with non- special needs kids. Kitty's twin son and daughter were in the class I worked in. Great kids. Cochran's son, Beaux, was in that class also. Very polite kids. Beaux even had a raspy voice just like his dad. Crazy.

Anyways, having worked somewhat closely with Kirby and his family, I couldn't be happier for Kirby. Was hoping he would stay as a HCIW, but ya know, just like the Bear... When Mama calls, you gotta go.

How bout this: 2 Saban disciples in the SEC East now. Crazy. All the talk about Saban building the SEC brand and then tearing it apart by beating everybody and getting them fired... recent articles that talked about "If you can't beat him, be like him (by hiring his assistant)" is coming into fruition. All in the SEC. Proof positive.

Interesting stat: if both are still coaching UA/UGA, the first time Saban and Kirby will meet as opponents (in the regular season, outside of SECCG) is in 2020. I think Saban hangs around till then.

"Why would they wait until possibly Monday to make an announcement?" Because he is the Bama DC this week. Next week he will be the UGA HC.

What happened to Sunday? I have no doubt that Kirby is going, and Kirby is in a good situation because he can now probably ask for more to that it doesn't look like UGA screwed up the negotiations. Saturday evening and Sunday will be when Kirby and his agent lay out his terms for him to accept the role.
