🏈 AJC Reporting UGA Has Hired Kirby

Thanks Pink, I'm starting to get a little concerned.

How many coaches we lost over the years...bottom line, Saban is still the HC and you know he has a plan for everything. Look at the staff that he built after the last changes. Our defensive coaches were upgraded over the last few years. I imagine we'll see some guys boomerang back to us to fill some of the vacancies.

Okay, lost my focus for a second.

Smart will coach against UF this weekend. Then we have a month to get use to him not being on the sidelines... it will be alright. I'm sure most players would have expected this as well.

I would think he will finish the season, much like McElwain did when Colorado St. hired him, or like Tom Herman did for Ohio St. when Houston hired him.

Mr.Pink you right after the Uf game the Bama players will have a month to get use without him on the sideline. But, can we as fans can?

Those are smaller schools though. I would think UGA wants Smart taking over asap.

The deal doesn't get finalized until Sunday, so he's here until then.

But, dead period aside for recruiting purposes, he still has to put a staff together. If I were UGA, I would want him starting Monday to out the staff together and start recruiting new and committed players until the dead period. Let the interim coach the bowl game.

Weren't the reports saying that Richt stays at UGA in some sort of administrative role or to help with the transition? Seemed odd at the time but maybe that's because they know Kirby intends to finish out the season with Bama. As he should. It's not just a bowl game.. if you're contending for a NC, the coaches should finish what they started. Just my opinion.

I meant let the interim for UGA coach their bowl game.

If you're a top 2 or 3 job and hire a new HC, do you want him at another school (in your conference no less) for a month after you hire him, or do you want him locking down the top recruits you have and putting together the best staff possible?

I would be very surprised if Kirby is allowed to coach/recruit for Bama passed this Sunday... call me crazy...

Saban's opinion too. He stated as much earlier in the week talking about how much he respected McElwain for staying on for the BCS in 2011. I think Kirby stays through the playoffs.

Well Richt has already stated numerous times in the last few interviews that hes staying to coach UGAs bowl game so i wouldnt look at Kirby being gone too fast. Cant move ur things and and take over when the old regime is still there through the new year

The players are not happy. They think the timing to be way too soon with games left to play. Ridley on Twitter expressed his disappointment.

Yeah I see that. Which obviously means they haven't mentioned anything to the players and they're simply reading the rumors like everyone else. Considering the way the media is these days, it would be nice if the coaches clarified to them beforehand what the situation is and expressed their intent to stay and finish the season regardless, which I hope to be the case.

I am all for promoting Mel Tucker and screw bringing back Pruitt, dude is a grade A douchenozzle. I knew he was one a long time ago, back when I covered him in HS(was once a sportswriter/photog).

As for Cochran, should not be that hard to replace him but what I don't get, why would he want to leave? He has one of, if not the, best setups in all of sports, right where he is now.

I am thinking UGA really needs a special teams coach and we have just the guy for them.

I just hate that Smart likely won't coach the playoff game (and possible NC Game), assuming we make it. I'm just curious if we have someone who can fill that role for that game, that can make calls and adjustments on the fly like Smart can.

But who knows? Maybe we will luck out and he'll stick around for the playoffs.

Kirby has everything that UGA is looking for. But, the "last minute snags" will be when they hear what he wants. They haven't spoken yet, despite what the press leads you to believe. Why would they wait until possibly Monday to make an announcement? They could meet late on Saturday after the game and then again on Sunday. Depending on how that goes, the announcement would come later Sunday or Monday.

"Why would they wait until possibly Monday to make an announcement?" Because he is the Bama DC this week. Next week he will be the UGA HC.
