🏈 A-day review: Well We've Seen The QB's; What Say RTB ?

Seriously, what were you expecting? What were you watching, specifically?

I honestly don't get why so much attention is paid to the QB position in scrimmages like this past Saturday when things are so controlled, so limited. They ran four offensive sets. Four. We as fans get as much of a preview for the fall as The Walking Dead fans get when they watch Talking Dead.

Personally, I'm watching guys like Jennings, Foristall, Kief, etc. getting a glimpse of what we might see in 2017.

But, whatever floats your boat, right?

What was I looking for:

A Touchdown drive in the first 2 hours. CRAAAZY - Right?

Or maybe just a few nice third down conversions in the first 3 quarters. That is what I was looking for.

The offense is plenty watered down but the news flash is that there are lots of 4/5 star guys on that side of the ball also. Maybe even a few play makers. Guys that can catch and run if given the chance.

The defense was not exactly throwing the world at the offense either. A few blitzes here and there... But imagine a QB having to make a play against a blitz? Too much to ask? Especially when the QB has no fear of physical contact...

So to reiterate myself since you asked - I was looking for a competent offense with decent QB play. Aside from Hurts showing sporadic signs of this, I didn't see it.

I don't understand and have never understood one simple fact. A guy like Jacob Eason can come into a program like Ugag and look the part of being the future as a true frosh. We get a guy like BB8 and he seems to have a very similar skill set and he develops so slowly within our program. Same thing with Josh Rosen and UCLA last year. It would just be nice to get one of these supposed 5-star guys to come into our program and deliver soon enough that it's not a one and done kind of situation and we have a known commodity coming into the season. Now, on the other hand, I wouldn't trade the success we have had for this one known commodity but it seems like it would be nice to have.

I know thread is manly because of "off-season" banter. It has also been brought to our attention of the watered down play-book because of all of the "eyes" watching the game.

Does anyone remember 2 years ago when Coker first arrived to UA when he and Sims battled it out for the spring? I think that was the year that Bateman was our punter.

I remember the meltdown on the radio talk shows the following week. We were doomed, etc. (We made it to the final 4 and coulda, woulda, shoulda played for the MNC)

We have a long ways to go between now and the first few games of the season when CNS will name Bateman as the QB. :D

Really??? :skeo::eek1:

I was so starved for some Bama football that I was entertained no matter how pitiful the offense looked, but TideStalker is right the O was a little more than yawn inspiring.

Look no one is doubting what CNS & staff have accomplished with these game manager QB's. Its been nothing short of a miracle. Truly one of the more amazing feats I have ever witnessed in sports. The staff deserves an endless amount of credit for getting the absolute maximum potential out of some of these QB's.

Here is where the frustration is originating for me personally. Bama identifies and grooms NFL talent at DL, OL, LB, OLB, S, CB, RB, and WR more so than any program in the country, but is lucky to get their QB's invited to the combine much less drafted early. Where is the disconnect ?

This actually starts before the CNS era; I dont believe that Bama has had a 1st round QB in my LIFETIME. Yes I know its much harder to identify a future star at QB than at other positions, but CNS and staff have had 10 years now to identify and groom a QB the game-plan does not have to be adjusted for due to them being "limited."

Even AJ was tagged with the "game manager" tag, and he is by far the best QB we have had over the past ten years.

This reminds me of the great kick-off debates of years past. The Homers of Bama nation thought that CNS was literally telling the kicker to kick the ball short, because they could not believe that Bama was the only team in the country without a kicker that could kick the ball into the endzone. haha This became such a message board topic that finally a reporter asked CNS point blank one day "do you want it kicked short, or do you want it kicked into the endzone ?" CNS reply was " I wish he would kick it into the seats every time." lol

So this never ending string of game-manager QB's, and how the homers in Bama nation rationalize it gives me a good laugh. As if all CNS wants is a game manager. As if he is opposed to having a first round talent QB that can, and does make all the throws on time/in stride. As if the absolute only thing he wants the QB to do is not turn the ball over.

Sometimes I wonder what some of the better QB's in the league could do with our WR corp, and an extra defender in the box like there always is vs Bama to defend the run because teams dont respect our ability to throw it.

In conclusion I know Bateman is likely the man. He fits the mold of what we have had year after year, but I cant help but pull for the guy that looks like he could be something more. I love winning titles, and that is the bottom line here so this is merely wishful thinking, but I personally would really enjoy having a QB that was fun to watch play on Saturdays.

I dont feel like having a great QB should mean we cant win titles; it should help Bama win titles more easily.

Stalker is right... the D is suffocating, but the O is loaded with talent also. They should not be rendered totally inept by the D. There were open receivers all over the place, but the QB's could not get them the ball.

If all Bama is going to ask Bateman to do is hand the ball off, and throw five yard check down passes why not let Hurts do it since he can also run the ball ? Yeah I know its not that simple, but my lifelong desire to watch a Bama QB dominate on Saturdays is skewing my judgement, and frankly after all these years waiting for a stud QB I think that is reasonable. :D

Tis the season for what could be... thats all there is until fall camp.

Good post T&B. To tag on to one of your statements about the QB not getting the ball to the play makers. CNS mentioned a few drops by some of our guys that usually don't drop the ball.

I know where I was sitting on Saturday I had a good angle of a pass Bateman threw to Ridley that was a for sure TD and Ridley flat out dropped it. Ridley had a step on the DB and Bateman led him perfectly and hit him in the hands........should have been 7.

This is yet another reason why I don't pay attention to the stats on QB's during A-day. Forgive my hyperbole here, Greg, but I've seen more than one talk about UGA's QB's as if they were the gold standard for spring ball.

They had one TD, and completed 60% of their passes.
Bama had one TD, and completed 56% of their passes.

Two of those QB's for the 'Dawgs looked like shit when they played Bama last year. That was following a 2015 G-day where Faton Bauta went 16-of-25 for 171 yards and a touchdown that covered 25 yards. Brice Ramsey was 5-of-9 for 174 yards, including a 72-yard scoring pass, while Jacob Park had 92 yards on 10-of-15. That's better numbers than this spring.

Everyone wants to bang on Grif but no one wants to mention he was kicking with a fairly brisk wind. BUT, more importantly, his 0-4 was with the White—different holder, different snapper.

I do get what people want to see but I have to weigh that against what we have seen—for the 10th year in a row. It is what it is ... and just like every other year, what we saw Saturday?

Don't. Mean. Shit.

Bottom line, we all look at things differently. I choose to look at the finished product.

He doesn't have pocket presence right now, SLO. That's why he's so quick to take off instead of allowing a play to develop. Even with a few weeks of practice in the fall, that's not something he's going to pick up over a matter of 15 or so practices. That's not even taking into account the speed of play at this level: one of the reasons I say "no pocket presence." Let's not forget, this is a pro-style offense. That presence is required.

Jake was in our system a year before he was able to get a grasp of the playbook—after how many years in D1 play? Hell, how many games into 2015 did we still see a lot of indecisiveness from Jake?

Consider this. When he and Blake were imitating Deshaun pre-NC game, do you think he was back there due to his ability to learn Clemson's playbook? Or, was it because of his speed and elusiveness?

A hell of a lot of potential, no doubt. However, he doesn't give this team the best chance to win. The question will be whether he 'shirts or not.

If I recall this correctly, Sutton was the first true frosh to start at UA.

Dollars to donuts, first day of fall camp we're going to see the same reports we've seen all spring with the rotation the same way it was yesterday.

I intended to write "first under Saban".

Just to tag on to @TerryP post on UGA QBs. Eason was going against 2's, 3's, and walk ons. Bateman and Cornwell went against the nation's best damn defense! Those 2's that Barnett and Hurts went against, are going to be pretty damn salty when their time comes as well. I say that to say this. UGA has and will continue to do what most do, let your 1's beat up on your 2's, 3's, and walk ons while BAMA will go best on best.

What I saw was a practice that was in dress rehearsal mode. All the players dressed in game day jerseys, all the coaches in game day attire with the exception of CNS. It was a good day to watch practice because fans do not get that chance on a regular basis, heck, even the press is limited on what they get to see. As Allen Iverson said, "we talking bout practice"!

Side note - From the 4 QB's stats I saw on the previous page, they completed 50% of passes. 34/68. I'd like to know how many of those 34 were for more than 5 yards... Anyway

If we only looked at the finished product, this site wouldn't be cool. Reason we all come here is to talk sh*t, evaluate, argue, agree on opinions about Alabama football... You like to give compliments to the A-Day defense and some of the newcomers, and rightfully so... Those of us who would like to evaluate the QB position are just pointing out there is more negative than positive in a 4 quarter scrimmage.... I don't see how that's any different than what you're doing at other positions. Point is - If we all only looked and talked about the finished product, Alabama football wouldn't be alabama football. What makes it great is the energy, enthusiasm, and borderline craziness of every single thing associated with the program.

Obviously, None of this is news to you, you've always been a good sport that's why I like going back and fourth with you. More times than not you get it right. I just cannot see how outside of some of Hurts plays, anyone could be encouraged by the QB development of the other 3 at this point

Not that this means anything but I walk around and watch players while taking pictures and Blake Barnett impressed me when they came off the field and would talk to each lineman and the running backs and show support for them where as the others would just go and sit down. I know that stuff does not mean much but it looked like he wanted to step up and be a leader

I am far from deeming UGA the gold standard of anything but choking early every season. That being said, Eason, despite throwing against the 2nd or 3rd defense, passed the eye test without paying attention to his final stats. Nice accuracy and delivery. Didn't look like a true freshman to me but I am also not a scout, just Mr. Joe Ordinary Fan. I'd be willing to bet he will be their starter quicker than Matt Stafford.

I am pulling for all of our QB's. Just want the best out there versus the Trojans.
