🏈 934, and counting

In the spirit of Terry's post a few weeks back noting the number of days since Bama has lost to Tennessee, I offer up this puzzle.

What last happened 934 days ago (as of 21 July)?

Surfed around for a few minutes over lunch on this one...got me LBS. Nothing in our football history I can piece together, no commitments, no SEC games, no one fired that I could think of although it's real close to Kiffin leaving UT.

Those of you who have read any of my posts will agree that you have to cut me a bit of slack with a big number like 934 (that's a lot of counting for a guy with a free Alabama public school education). 934 +/- a few, the date I'm thinking of is January 2, 2009. What last happend on January 2, 2009?

1297 days ago, only off by ~ 1 year :)

That Utah game was the first time I used ticketreserve to get my tickets to a BCS game, got 4 tickets - sister/brother in law drove down from Bham, wife and I drove down from Dallas. Had a great time in NO the first night, the 2nd night not so much...my jaw was on the floor most of the 1st quarter.

Yes, the Utah loss...and '08 not '09. :redface-new: Moving on.

The Utah loss was our last out of conference loss -- ~1300 days as resident Math whiz and calendar owner Planomateo professes( show off ). That is a long time and underscores Bama's role in sustaining the SEC's dominance over the rest of college football, and not just during bowl games which can be viewed as exceptional situtuations to some.

During this span (2008-2011 seasons), Alabama has gone 14-0 against non-confernece opponents. Others may point out that some were even FCS opponents. True, like #3 FCS ranked Georgia Southern who held Trent Richardson to fewer yards than did LSU's might defense. I would counter that 5 of those 14 teams were ranked FBS opponents. They included #7 Virginia Tech, #2 Texas, #18 PennState, #7 Michigan State, and PennState again as #23.

About this 5 ranked teams in a 14 game stint. Five ranked opponents is the average number of ranked SEC opponets that we face in our SEC schedule. We face 4 ranked SEC opponets in 2011, 6 in 2010, and 4 in 2009. My point is that this 14-0 run has been no cake walk. What more we chose much of this cake walk. And, we also are playing that SEC schedule in addition to this OOC schedule.

Virginia Tech and Penn State (twice) were tough games that we chose to play when we could have scheduled Our Sisters of Miserable Defeat for easy win before a tough home game. This is Alabama sticking its neck out, which I offer to a counter to those who say we avoid competition. As for the other two bowl wins, both Texas and Michigan State were Conference champions when we beat them.

To add some interest to the start of the season this year, we have once again stuck our neck out in seeking out a tough opponent. September 1st against Michigan will be the thrid Big 10 team (4th game) that we will have faced since Utah. They are also virtually the only shot that this streak has of being ended this year. Western Kentucky, Florida Atlantic, and Western Carolina round out our non-Conference schedule for the regular season. A future bowl opponent may get us this year, but New Years Bowls are ~163 days away. Michigan will be ranked. Our bowl opponent will be ranked. Beat Michigan and win our bowl and we could be looking at 19-0 streak against OOC opponents, 7 of them ranked, and having not lost to someone outside the SEC for over 1600 days. Or to say it another way;

A child born the day after Utah beat Alabama would have never seen Bama loss to a non-SEC opponent, and would be starting Kindergarten when the next shot at ending the streak comes up again with Virginia Tech in Atlanta next August 31st 2013.

My granddaughter fits that category. I'm hoping the streak continues. Very good info LBS, thanks.
