Alabama football lapping the field at turning 5-stars into first-round picks

The 2017 college football season and the 2018 NFL Draft have come and gone, and one thing is a certainty exiting the events – Alabama reigns supreme. The Crimson Tide won the national championship and then they won the draft, having a record-setting 12 players selected. No other FBS team had more than seven draftees.

Yet that doesn’t truly describe Alabama’s dominance.

There will be some that think, ā€œOf course Alabama had the most players drafted. They get the best recruits.ā€ That is true. But it’s also not a holistic look at what makes the Crimson Tide great under Nick Saban. Instead, one needs to examine Alabama’s NFL factory process; the rate at which the program transforms elite high school talent into NFL players. To do so, 247Sports looked at every five-star prospect of the Saban era and their eventual NFL Draft future. That means players from the 2008 recruiting class (Saban’s first full cycle at Alabama) to the 2015 recruiting classes (the most recent class with draft eligibility), excluding any athletes who remain in college.

There are 241 247Sports Composite five-star players from college football in that period – the elite of elite coming out of high school.

Alabama, unsurprisingly, signed the highest total of those at 29. But that’s not the important number. To truly grade development you must observe the number of those recruits who became first-round picks. That’s the full college cycle of development — a choice prospect comes in and a highly-regarded NFL talent comes out.

Fourteen of those 29 eventually became a first-round pick in Tuscaloosa, a rate of 48.3 percent that doesn’t count six other Crimson Tide five-stars that were second-round picks.

For some needed perspective on that number, let’s look at how the other FBS teams fared.

Take away Alabama’s 29 five-star players from that window, and there are 212 five-star recruits. Some schools have had a lot (Florida State: 24) in that 2008-15 period, while others have had just one (13 different schools). Taken together, the number of first-round picks from that five-star pool minus Alabama is 36.

That’s a hit rate of only 17 percent.

Think about that. Alabama’s five-star recruits are picked in the first round at a rate of 48.3 percent, while five-star recruits that go to any other school are selected at a 17-percent clip. A five-star prospect who picks Alabama is more than doubly likely be selected in the first round than if he goes anywhere else.

6_8353585.jpg

The numbers don’t stop there. Alabama’s five-star recruits as a whole in that 2008-15 recruiting period are drafted at a 75.9 percent clip. Earlier this week, 247Sports looked at draft data from the last two years and found that five-star recruits are generally picked at around a 61 percent ratio. Take away Alabama’s yearly haul from that group, and the percentage drops to 54.2.

So while 75.9 percent of Alabama five-star players are drafted in the Saban era, only 54.2 of all others hear their named called.

That’s a staggering gap in development. It also helps explain just why the Tide have been so dominant.

Yes, Alabama generally recruits better players than anyone else. Seven straight No. 1 overall classes from 2011 to 2017 are evidence of that. But where the Crimson Tide really separate themselves from everyone else is what they do with those recruits once they arrive on campus.

Here are the percentages of five-star recruits that became first-round picks from other programs that signed 10-plus such players from 2008-15: Florida (29.4%), LSU (21.4%), Georgia (18.8%), Florida State (16.7%), USC (15.8) and Ohio State (0%).

Is it any wonder the Crimson Tide have dominated during this stretch?

This is not a perfect example of development, of course. For example, Ohio State is producing plenty of first round draft picks even if a stretch of five-star recruits didn’t turn into superstars. Five-stars also make up a small percentage of every recruiting class. Development of all other recruits is at least equally important and more likely paramount.

But Alabama’s constant development of these five-stars does show why it’s been so good during Saban's regime.

The Crimson Tide sign the best players, and then they keep them that way.

It’s why Alabama just won its fifth national title in 10 years. It’s also why the Crimson Tide show no signs of stopping. Saban not only identifies the best players, he continually makes them better. That’s the real separator during this Alabama reign in college football.

Would be interesting to see what percentage would be if 2nd round added. (Hand). Was crazy Tony 5*?

Who are some of CNS five stars who didn’t go in first 2 rounds?

right....even the best kickers usually dont get over a 3star ranking. However Bama usually signs the #1 or #2 kicker. Somehow most just dont seem to turn out.

How every Alabama 5-star performed in NFL drafts

Interesting article. I also think they missed Bo Scarborough...If he was a 5* that makes 30.
Saban has had 48.3% of the 5* athletes that he brought to Alabama drafted in the first round. The rest of CFB....17%. I would so be showing this to any 5* player. Numbers speak for themselves. Saban is the GOAT and if you want to get to the NFL...Bama is the place to be. Going in the first round means "gettin that paper" and nobody does it better than Bama!

I saw mention that none of the fives stars signed by Ohio State under Urban have been drafted in round one. I have not looked to see if that's true.

Something I thought that as interesting over the past season of coaching turnover. It came out that we really had no one on staff to evaluate and truly coach up the specialists (PK,P). One of the areas the staff didn't seem to truly coach up the talent that was there. Seems to be the only logical explanation, considering all the top rated kickers we have been able to sign. I know that JK Scott is an exception to the rule, but he stated he would send off video of him kicking to have some one evaluate his technique in order to get better.

Hope the new coach from aTm will be able to fill that role and coach up the players in house. I would think having a former college kicker on staff as a coach will be huge for us. If A-day is any indication of things to come, it looks like he is already having a huge impact. It will be nice to see these guys come in and really be developed like the rest of the players on the team.

Justin Thomas handled kicking duties for us last season.

NICK SABAN'S 5-STARS

2008
Julio Jones – WR – Foley, AL
Became an All American, All-SEC at Alabama. Won 2008 SEC Freshman of the Year. 2011 1st Round Draft Pick (6 overall) to Atlanta.
2-time All-Pro selection, 5-time Pro Bowler, won the receiving title in 2015, already on the verge of breaking every Atlanta receiving record. One of the best players in the NFL.

Tyler Love – OT – Birmingham, AL
Started his career with a bad break in his leg and then injured his neck and never really recovered. Was a backup his entire career, when healthy, graduated from Alabama and left the team with one more year of eligibility left because of injuries.

BJ Scott – ATH – Mobile, AL
Bounced between receiver, safety and cornerback before settling at cornerback his sophomore year. Played in nine games as a freshman and was expected to win a starting job at corner as a sophomore but ended up getting beat out by a group of talented freshmen. Played in six games at corner. Transferred to South Alabama for his junior and senior season and had a breakout year as a senior, moving to safety, where he totaled 84 tackles and six tackles-for-loss. Was also a kick returner at South. Got a chance at rookie minicamp with the Bears but never caught on there or anywhere else.

2009
Trent Richardson – RB – Pensacola, FL
SEC All-Freshmen, 2-time All-SEC first team, 2011 SEC Offensive Player of the Year, unanimous All American in 2011, 2011 Doak Walker winner, 2011 Heisman finalist. Selected in first round of the 2012 NFL Draft (third overall) by Browns. Started his career solid with the Browns but as time went on seemed to never really have the vision an NFL back needs, which really hurt. He tried to just run over everyone rather than look for holes. Traded to Indianapolis and then eventually released and bounced between teams before moving on to the CFL where he currently plays for Saskatchewan and actually may carve out a nice career for himself there.

Dre Kirkpatrick – CB – Gadsden, AL
2-time All-SEC, All American, drafted in first round of 2012 NFL Draft (17 overall) by Cincinnati. Early in his career looked to be a bust because he simply couldn’t stay healthy but ended up becoming one of the more consistent starting cornerbacks in the league. Earned himself a big pay raise before the 2017 season.

Nico Johnson – LB – Andalusia, AL
SEC All-Freshmen team, drafted in fourth round of 2013 NFL Draft by Kansas City. Put on the practice squad as a rookie and then bounced around the leage for a few years. Suffered a lot of injuries in both college and NFL and never seemed to be able to shake them, ended up failing a physical for the Giants and that was the last opportunity he’s had in the league. Announced his retirement in 2017 and is currently pursuing a career in coaching.

DJ Fluker – OT – Foley, AL
First-team All American, All-SEC, drafted in first round of 2013 NFL Draft (11 overall) by San Diego Chargers. Was a 2013 All-Rookie but then moved to guard in 2015 and struggled a bit before catching on. Signed with the Giants but ended up battling injuries and eventually was released. Currently plays for the Seahawks and is expected to move back to tackle.

2010
Dee Milliner – CB – Millbrook, AL
Unanimous All American, All-SEC, first round pick in 2013 NFL Draft (9 overall) by New York Jets. Battled injuries literally his entire NFL career. Was named starter at the beginning of his rookie career but was torched over and over and got benched repeatedly. Finally, caught on at the end of the year and ended up AFC Defensive Player of the Week for the last game of the season. Injured his ankle at the beginning of his sophomore season and then ruptured his Achilles tendon after recovering from that. Broke his wrist at the beginning of the next season and then injured his knee. Jets released him and he was never given an opportunity after that.

Phillip Sims – QB – Chesapeake, VA
Competed with AJ McCarron for the starting job in 2011 but was beaten out and transferred to Virginia after the 2012 season. Won the starting job at Virginia but after playing pretty decent in 2012 was ruled academically ineligible. Transferred to Winston-Salem and was the starting QB there for his senior season. Signed with the Cardinals as a rookie and bounced between team before playing a year in the CFL. Retired and now is the head coach of a high school in Virginia. The ā€œotherā€ Sims in this recruiting class ended up breaking every single season passing record at Alabama and led Alabama to the playoffs in 2014.

2011
Cyrus Kouandjio – OT – Hyattsville, MD
Consensus All American, All-SEC, second round draft pick by Buffalo Bills. Immediately became a starter with Buffalo but in 2017 broke his hip when he fell at his house. Eventually the injury led to Buffalo releasing him and then he signed with the Lions but was released there, too. Signed with Denver and ended up starting a few games. He is expected to compete for a starting spot now that he is completely healthy for the first time in over a year.

HaHa Clinton-Dix – S – Orlando, FL
All-SEC, consensus All-American, All-Rookie team, All-Pro, Pro Bowler. Drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft (21 overall) by Green Bay. Has been a star in Green Bay’s secondary since day one and is one of the top safety’s in the league.

Trey DePriest – LB – Springfield, OH
First team All-SEC. Signed with Ravens after not being drafted and was cut before training camp even started. Never got a chance in the NFL.

Dee Hart – RB – Orlando, FL
After serving as a backup at Alabama, joined Jim McElwain at Colorado State where he ended up rushing for more than 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns in his one season at CSU. Went undrafted but signed with the Miami Dolphins before being cut before training camp.

2012
Landon Collins – S – Geismar, LA
All-SEC, unanimous All American, All-Rookie, All-Pro, two-time pro bowler. Drafted in second round of 2015 NFL Draft. Started since day one in NY and has become one of the best safety’s in the league.

Eddie Williams – ATH – Panama City Beach, FL
Was kicked off of the team after his freshman season when he and two other players robbed a fellow Alabama student. Played at Garden City Community College and was a star on their defense helping them win a JUCO championship in his first year. He did not return to the team the next season and hasn’t played football since.

TJ Yeldon – RB – Daphne, AL
Two-time All SEC, drafted in second round of the 2015 NFL Draft by Jacksonville Jaguars. Had a good rookie season on a horrible team and then struggled with injuries as a sophomore. Jaguars drafted Fournette last season and Yeldon spent the year as a change-of-pace back but averaged nearly 6 yards per carry and caught 30 passes. Still with the Jags.

2013
Reuben Foster – LB – Auburn, AL
Unanimous All-American, Butkus Award winner, All-SEC, drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft (31 overall) by 49ers. Struggled with injuries as a rookie but still totaled more than 70 tackles and ended his season with a 14-tackle game. PFF graded him the highest of every rookie NFL with an overall season grade of more than 90%. Had his career completely turned upside down with the current domestic issues he is dealing with. 49ers were expected to release or trade him before the draft but didnt and seems that they may think his legal issues will be settled before the season.

Derrick Henry – RB – Yulee, FL
SEC Offensive Player of the Year, All-SEC, unanimous All-American, Walter Camp Award winner, Doak Walker Award winner, Maxwell Award winner, Heisman Trophy winner, all-time Alabama rushing leader. Drafted in second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by Tennessee. Has started just three total games in two years at Tennessee but has still rushed for nearly 1,300 yards and 10 TDs (744 yards and 5 TD in 2017) during those years. Was a backup behind DeMarco Murray both seasons until he became the featured back following a Murray knee injury. He destroyed the Chiefs defense in the playoffs for over 150 yards rushing and in the offseason the Titans let Murray go to hand the reigns over to Henry.

Jonathan Allen – DE/OLB – Ashburn, VA
3-time All-SEC, Unanimous All-American, Lombardi Award winner, Chuck Bednarick Award winner, Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner, SEC Defensive Player of the Year, drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft (17 overall) by Washington. After immediately winning a starting job and being the Redskins top pass rusher as a rookie, he suffered a broken foot and missed the rest of the season. Is expected to make up a monster defensive line with Payne this season.

OJ Howard – TE – Prattville, AL
Despite never being used to his full potential at Alabama he totaled 1,726 yards and seven touchdowns with his biggest performances coming in the biggest games. Drafted in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft (19 overall) by Tampa Bay. Started 14 games as a rookie and totaled 432 yards and six touchdowns despite a pretty bad season by QB Jameis Winston. Winston is expected to bounce back this season and Howard will likely have more of a role in the offense.

A’Shawn Robnson – DT – Fort Worth, TX
Consensus All-American, drafted in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Lions. The monster in the middle of the Lions defense started all 16 games and was a run stop beast, led all DT in pass deflections. Battled injuries in 2017 but still played in all 16 games. Expected to return to form now healthy in 2018.

2014
Cam Robinson – OT – West Monroe, LA
All-SEC, Jacobs Blocking Trophy winner, Outland Trophy winner, consensus All-American, drafted in second round of the 2017 NFL Draft by Jaguars. Started 15 games for a revitalized Jaguars offense in 2017, will return as starter in 2018.

Da’Shawn Hand – DT – Woodbridge, VA
All-SEC, drafted in fourth round of 2018 NFL Draft by the Lions.

Marlon Humphrey – CB – Hoover, AL
All-American, All-SEC, drafted in first round of 2017 NFL Draft (16 overall) by Ravens. Played most of his rookie season in the nickel but started five games. Had some issues with a ā€œstolen chargerā€ in offseason but is expected to be a starter at corner in 2018.

Rashaan Evans – LB – Auburn, AL
All-SEC, drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (22 overall) by Tennessee. Was a do-everything backer at Alabama and is expected to become the next Keith Bullock in the Titans defense.

Bo Scarbrough – RB – Tuscaloosa, AL
Batting injuries throughout his Alabama career but despite that was always effective when on the field. Drafted in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft by Dallas. Is on a team with a lot of running backs that will be hard to make if he can’t stay healthy.

2015
Calvin Ridley – WR – Pompano Beach, FL
2-time All-SEC, drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (26 overall) by Atlanta. Joins Julio in Atlanta after being Alabama’s No. 1 target for three straight years despite some passing deficiencies at times. Is expected to help Atlanta return to 2016 form as one of the deadliest offenses in the NFL.

Kendall Sheffield – CB – Missouri City, TX
Left Alabama after his freshman season and played in 2016 with Blinn College. Transferred to Ohio State for 2017 and started all 14 games. Will start in 2018 at Ohio State, too.

Blake Barnett – QB – Corona, CA
The curious case of Blake Barnett. After Jalen Hurts beat him out for the starting spot in 2016 he transferred, midseason, to Arizona State. He didn’t start a single game at ASU in 2017 and is transferring to another school, likely USF, for 2018 because he still says he has a ā€œdreamā€ of playing in the NFL. Good luck with that.

Da’Ron Payne – DT – Birmingham, AL
Freshman All-American, first team All-SEC, Sugar Bowl MVP, CFP Championship MVP, drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (13 overall) by Washington. Will join Allen and Ryan Anderson at Washington.

Minkah Fitzpatrick – CB – Jersey City, NJ
2-time consensus All-American, Chuck Bednarick Award winner, Jim Thorpe Award winner, 2-time All-SEC, Freshman All American, drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft (11 overall) by Miami.

Damien Harris – RB – Berea, KY
Still at Alabama, has a chance to break the all-time rushing record as a senior. Has 2 straight 1,000 seasons.

2016
Ben Davis – LB – Gordo, AL
Has yet to crack the rotation at linebacker. Special teams player so far.

Mack Wilson – LB – Montgomery, AL
Earned playing time as a freshman and became a key on the defense for Alabama in 2017. Expected to start in 2018.

Jonah Williams – OT – Folsom, CA
Has started every single game so far in his career. Freshman All American in 2016 and third-team All-American in 2017. Likely will be another first rounder in 2019 or 2020.

Terrell Hall (Lewis) – DE – Washington D.C.
Played in 11 games in 2016 and was expected to be a big star in 2017 but injured his arm in the opener and missed almost the entire season. Returned for Auburn and the playoffs and was a monster in the playoffs. Has gotten even bigger in the offseason and will return healthy in 2018.

Charles Baldwin – OT – Brooklyn, NY (JUCO)
Kicked off the team after spring his first year at Alabama and transferred to Kansas. Didn’t win the starting job at Kansas and left the team midseason.

2017
Najee Harris – RB – Antioch, CA
Was a backup most of 2017 but ended up breaking out in the second half of the national championship and is expected to have an expanded role in 2018 in a crowded backfield.

Alex Leatherwood – OT – Pensacola, FL
Played in seven games as a backup in 2017 but played the entire second half against Georgia after Williams was hurt. Expected to compete for a starting job in 2018.

Dylan Moses – LB – Bradenton, FL
SEC All-Freshman. Started two games, played in 11 before injuring his foot in the playoffs. Played outside and inside and looks like a young Rashaan Evans already. Expected to start next to Mack Wilson in 2018.

Jerry Jeudy – WR – Deerfield Beach, FL
Played as a reserve in 2017 and expected to have expanded role in 2018.

Tua Tagovailoa – QB – Honolulu, HI
Played in a bunch of blowouts before becoming the savior of the second half of the national championship, earned Offensive MVP honors of the CFP National Championship. Expected to beat Jalen Hurts out as starter in 2018 and has already been given saint status in the state.

LaBryan Ray – DE – Madison, AL
Earned playing time throughout the season but should have an expanded role in 2018.

Isaiah Buggs – DE – Perkinston, MS (JUCO)
Was a starter on the Alabama d-line in 2018 and could end up as another first rounder with another solid season. Started 13 games in 2017.

Jedrick Wills – OT – Lexington, KY
Expected to move to guard and compete for a starting spot in 2018 after serving as a backup in 2017.

Eliot Baker – OT – San Francisco, CA (JUCO)
Likely will serve as a reserve again as a senior.

BOLD = first rounder
