Like Saban used to say, can’t really evaluate a signing class until later. These days maybe sooner, like within a season or two. But definitely can’t say squat at this juncture.

On a related topic, to anyone who understands revenue, do bowl payouts even reach the players anymore? I remember back in the day that the bowls offered an assortment of gift packages to the players for accepting the invitation to come play. And you had different levels of gift packages, the Rose Bowl often offering the ā€œgranddaddyā€ of bowl goodies to players and the largest payout to the participating schools. But now that players are being paid directly all season long, do bowls still offer gifts to players and bowl payouts to schools?? And if so do schools put all of the bowl payout towards their own budgets? Or to replenish their NIL collectives?? Just wondering how bowl money is being utilized today.

Yes, bowl games still give the players gifts... there is a set amount that the total cost can't exceed per rules, but the schools can add to it if they want. And yes, teams still receive bowl payouts, but it's mostly used to cover travel expenses... and oftentimes not even enough to do that.

and oftentimes not even enough to do that.
This was my understanding, especially for a team traveling from sea to shining sea just for a bowl to stay alive. Which leads me to my next question: is there even much financial gain to schools participating in an expanded playoff? Used to be that the prospect of playing in a single postseason bowl game with a big payout (and perhaps a lucrative conference championship game beforehand) could yield a university a pretty penny for the small price of 1-2 additional games. But a 16-game season (or 17 without a 1st-round bye) just seems cost-prohibitive for most athletic programs. Or maybe the conference TV deals (ESPN—>SEC, FoxSports—>BigTen) make it plenty profitable for those two conferences?? šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

To put it differently, take last season. Did Bama’s athletic department benefit much monetarily from playing an additional road game at OU and then a costly Rose Bowl trip, which always comes with considerable overhead for SEC schools and fans??

Between the 2 travel game checks and the 2 playoff game checks (those are shared with the other SEC schools which is dumb), I'm sure they walked away in the black, but it didn't stuff the department piggy bank. I doubt they made a ton on merchandise sales from the playoffs either, compared to other trips.

Right, like a minority percentage goes to the conference at large, to be divided among all conference members, right?

Yeah, it's a big ask, IMO, to ask fans to incur the cost of traveling to another away conference game during the holiday season to an opponent you already played a few weeks prior (OU), then also to travel to Pasadena just to see if your team can survive to play again at another "neutral site" two more times? I mean, the cost of regular season home games is ridiculous, especially when you factor in lodging. The system is expecting more and more out of fans' pockets at the time when I see less and less going into University coffers to keep Bama an attractive option for commits. It's just not obvious to me how seasons like last season are worth the hassle. I mean, yes, if we can be seeded highly enough to get an extra home game, and then, play in a bowl/playoff game within our region of the country for conservative travel costs for the team and fans, then sure. But obviously you can't plan on those stars aligning every season. Imagine if/when more playoff venues are selected in the North? How many football fans in the South will be excited to travel northward during December to watch their team in playoff game? We aren't talking a one-and-done, winner-takes-all, national championship, like in 2021 in Indy. I realize the SEC agreed to add another conference game for the bigger TV payout, but man, I just see how this system is seemingly spreading the increased portion of "butter" so very thin on a larger piece of bread. At a certain point, more is no longer more, but less.

Greedy bastards seem hell bent on breaking the system. Fact is, all the big games are becoming corporate events like the Super Bowl. A 100k seat stadium probably has about 25k real Joe-Blow fans like you and me representing each side for a total of 50k actual hard money earning working fans. The rest are there on corporate dimes and have no real interest in the teams playing. It is a social event in order to see and be seen. With that being said, the rich folk will always have the money to go and do and not bat an eye. That leaves the rest of us on the outside looking in. I'm growing very tired of all of this and is getting tired of being fleeced for more money and receiving less and less for giving. I have been in Tide Pride for over 20 years. I take my dad to a couple maybe 3 games a year and split the rest with my ex and kids. When my dad is no longer able to physically attend games, I can see my ass staying home and watching it on the TV..........and I only live about 35 minutes from the stadium.

They'll push it till it breaks, that what they do. Then they get bailed out and do it again. The consumer is always the sucker.

Henderson recently starred at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College, where he led the nation in receiving yards. He recorded 68 receptions, averaged 109.3 yards per game and scored 12 touchdowns. He finished the season with 1,228 receiving yards and 13 total receiving touchdowns, earning a spot on the All-Region Team.

This kid looks to have good size, exciting pickup!

We had a local kid here, won Mr. football his junior year and maybe won again this year, I don’t remember. Has good size for a RB and had some offers from decent schools. Chose instead to go with UT Martin, play for Ty’s dad. The offers didn’t have a ton of money and this way he’s just down the road. His plan is to prove his worth for a year at Martin and hopefully get bigger offers. I’m interested to see how his strategy works. It could end up being a great play for him.
