Bama News

The Spring Prospectus is a daily series taking a quick look at each position group before UA beings spring practice. This list of position groups will be updated with links as each one posts: running backs, wide receivers, tight ends, offensive line, defensive line, inside linebackers, outside linebackers, cornerbacks, safeties and special teams.

For a program that experiences NFL Draft churn at a higher rate than most, the University of Alabama football team has had no issues with returning quarterback production. In each of the last three seasons, UA has returned at least 23 passing touchdowns from the previous season.

This year, UA returns 16 touchdown passes. Four of those came against FCS Western Carolina; three more came against SEC cellar dweller Arkansas.

With little returning production and a highly touted addition to the position, UA quarterbacks will be under a powerful microscope when they begin spring practice on March 13.

Top returners: Mac Jones, after starting four games last season.
Losses: Tua Tagovailoa (NFL Draft).
Returning depth: Taulia Tagovailoa, Paul Tyson.
Early enrollees: Bryce Young, five-star from Pasadena, California.

Young came to campus as the No. 2 recruit in the nation in the 247 Sports Composite, an honor previously bestowed upon highly hyped prospects such as Myles Garrett, Najee Harris, Justin Fields. That status — on top of a record-breaking high school career — has many looking at him as a 2020 starter as early as the season opener against USC, where he first committed.

That would require an upheaval of Jones, who performed admirably in Tagovailoa’s injury absences: in the four full games he played, he completed 70 of his 98 passes (71.4 percent), averaging 11.9 yards per attempt and tossing 12 touchdowns to two interceptions.

In those four games — plus the two times he had to play a second half in Tagovailoa’s absence — Jones learned a valuable lesson about the job of a UA quarterback in this era.

ā€œIt’s really easier when you have the best players around you,ā€ Jones said after the Citrus Bowl. ā€œCoach (Nick) Saban always tells me, ā€˜Just do my job, get them the ball and they’ll make the plays.’ So, looking forward, we have a good group. Like I said, we have a long offseason and a lot to work on, and I’m really fired up to keep working.ā€

The spring will help sort out that pecking order for Jones, Young and the next Tagovailoa: Taulia, who played in five games in 2019.

@BamaBoyJosh, if the cards fall right, and they don't have to fall perfectly,, Mac's got a real good chance to be a high draft pick next season. I know there are several aspects of that you'll skeptically consider, but one little thing I've noticed (coming from the NFL guy I am.)

This draft talk led me to look at next season, and I see Fields and Trevor highlighting the class. There's one that "show's up," maybe two. Mac, with things going his way, could be one of those. I'm considering overall averages and if one can get to that top three there's a good chance he's a first rounder. It's not a deep QB class from today's perspective ... good odds it lays out for Mac.

Im predicting Mac is gonna have a very, very good year....motivated by now being Bama's starter after waiting three years, basically looked at as. talent wise, as maybe a game manager, and now being pushed by the top rated high school QB in the nation.

"There was no drop off at all [to] him [from] Tua "

I am a Jones fan and I think he did a really good job but that statement by a barner seems like a stretch. Just experience and overall accuracy were noticeable. Not suprising since he had not played a lot. I expect him to be better this year.

Makes me wonder why Fromm didn't stay at UGA for one more year. I feel like it is because of the fact that the entire line left this year and his supporting cast (receivers) were still very young, but with a good showing, he had the chance to do himself a lot of good.

Maybe Kirby told him they were changing offenses and he would be a square peg in a round hole, either way......meh:cautious:

He threw two bad picks against Auburn but he also torched them for nearly 400 yards, as well.
Agree.... but the 2 picks were still there at the end of the day. And he had 2 full games to prepare. But you cannot erase the 2 picks. And they were awful throws
And I hope he is all what @mando and @tider79 say.....
and i aint down on him i just don't agree with the " performed admirably " He certainly shows great potential

Tua did the same in the SEC Championship and a pick six to start the game against Clemson. What about Tua's fumble against the air against LSU, and the pick to Queen? It happens to even the very best.

What now?

He had two full games to prepare for ... so he's preparing for Auburn while they're going into Mississippi State? They're prepping for Auburn during UT Martin week when there's more than a handful of guys getting much needed rest...but he's prepping for Auburn for two full games?

You're pointing to two picks one of which isn't even on Mac. Where was the chip block?

@BamaFan334

Not downing on Mac. I really like Mac and i yhink talk that he will be unseated by either of the other 2 QBs is ridiculous
Just guestioning the term " performed admirably ". He performed good ..even excellent at times.....
Nor would i say Tua " Performed admirably" vs your 2 examples Terry. Would you.... he got pulled after 3 quarters vs Clemson!!!
And that pick at end of first half was a killer...

Maybe its just the term i had problems with....

If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, then baffle them with Bull Sh*t!!!! :ROFLMAO:
