| RECRUIT 2018 class update (long)

Andrew Bone: An update on the Tide targets in the 2018 class.

I know some might be a little nervous regarding the numbers. I believe when you finish reading this update it will ease some minds. Alabama is not nervous at all. Just let it play out is all I can really say.

Quarterback

Alabama is just waiting to see what happens here. UA is not in a rush to get a quarterback. Alabama hopes to get an elite player. I recently asked if there are any quarterbacks who could be on the cusp of receiving an offer. The answer was no. Alabama is going to recruit these top level guys, and see what happens.

Emory Jones, five-star quarterback from Heard County High School in Franklin, Georgia
The latest
: Will Alabama pull the ultimate stunner of the recruiting season and flip Jones away from the Buckeyes? Jones is listening to Alabama. That's a start. He has visited Alabama twice in the last few months. Things can really get interesting during the fall with return visits to Alabama, and family who may want him to stay closer to home. Alabama is in the race.

Justin Fields, five-star quarterback from Harrison High School in Kennesaw, Georgia
The latest:
Fields made a quiet trip to Tuscaloosa last month. He says Alabama is a contender. Alabama has some ground to make up for the elite prospect. A few sources confirmed Alabama is in better position with Jones than Fields at this time.

Tanner McKee, four-star quarterback from Centennial High School in Corona, California
The latest
: McKee is another prospect with interest in Alabama. He is expected to return to Alabama in November for the LSU game.

Jacob Sirmon, Rivals100 quarterback from Bothell High School in Washington, and Jack Tuttle, four-star quarterback from Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California, are still recruited heavily by Alabama. Alabama believes it still has a shot with Tuttle despite him not visiting Tuscaloosa this summer. Sirmon is committed to Washington. He is just another guy Alabama really likes. No, Trevor Lawrence is not flipping from Clemson.

Running back
Alabama has really only pressed for two backs this year- Zamir White and Asa Martin.

Asa Martin, four-star running back from Austin High School in Decatur, Alabama
The latest:
Martin did really well in camp. Alabama believes he is a Kenyan Drake type of player. He is possibly even more athletic, but not as fast. Alabama really likes Martin's ability to move around and make plays in open space. Alabama is very impressed. Martin will announce a decision on August 24 between Alabama, Auburn and Florida. We will see what happens. Alabama feels good about its chances to gain his commitment. Alabama will see what happens with Martin before deciding on what to do with some other backs.

Harold Joiner,
four-star athlete from Mountain Brook High School in Alabama, and Jerome Ford, three-star running back from Armwood High School in Seffner, Florida, are still in the mix.
Alabama will still recruit Zamir White, five-star running back from Scotland County High School in Lauringburg, North Carolina, despite his commitment to UGA. James Cook, five-star running back from Central High School in Miami, will likely go elsewhere.

Wide receivers
Alabama is hoping to add two-three more receivers in the 2018 class in addition to Xavier Williams, Rivals100 wide receiver from Madonna High School in Hialeah, Florida. Williams appears very solid with his commitment to Alabama after heavy speculation of a possible flip.

Justyn Ross, five-star wide receiver from Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama
The latest:
Another great visit to Alabama. He also competed in 7-on-7 on Saturday in Tuscaloosa where he was very dominant. He remains very high on Alabama's wish list. It's definitely a battle, but one Alabama should win.

Jaylen Waddle, Rivals100 wide receiver from Episcopal High School in Houston, Texas
The latest:
Waddle has been Alabama's top slot/speed WR target since spring evaluations. He attended Alabama's camp in June, and returned for the cook-out last week. Waddle is considered a priority target. A source in Tuscaloosa said, "He's one of the most explosive players we've had in camp in a long time." Folks in Texas think he stays closer to home. Bama believes it has an excellent chance to land the elite target especially after another great visit.

Jacob Copeland, four-star wide receiver from Escambia High School in Pensacola
The latest:
Alabama was on the outside for Copeland, but then made a serious move with him during his visit for A-Day. He also returned to Alabama in June. All signs were pointing to Alabama. Copeland did not visit Alabama in July, and attended Friday Night Lights at Florida instead of the cook-out. The Gators may have taken the lead for Copeland, and it appears he may commit very soon.

Tommy Bush, four-star wide receiver from Clemens High School in Schertz, Texas
The latest:
Bush is an explosive, tall receiver from the Lone Star State who took a visit to Alabama in June. Bush was very impressed with the Crimson Tide, and plans to return to Tuscaloosa during the season. The in-state schools like Texas and Texas A&M are pushing hard to keep him closer to home. We'll see how the return visit to Alabama goes this fall, and if he makes it for an official visit. Alabama definitely appears strongly in the mix.

Slade Bolden, three-star athlete from West Monroe High School in Louisiana
The latest:
Bolden did not have a committable offer from Alabama prior to attending camp last week. Bolden showed out in Tuscaloosa, and has become a big target for new OC Brian Daboll. Bolden grew up an LSU fan, but is very intrigued with Alabama. We continue to hear LSU has been going back-and-forth in terms of whether to accept his commitment. Maybe LSU will accept a commitment knowing Alabama is pressing hard for his signature. Maybe he opts for the Crimson Tide like so many other top players from Louisiana. He's definitely a take for Alabama. A decision is very possible before the start of the season.

Kearis Jackson, four-star wide receiver from Peach County High School in Fort Valley, Georgia
The latest:
Jackson attended the cook-out last week. It seemed liked he had a very good time. Jackson went on a family vacation after his visit to Alabama. Chad Simmons hopes to catch up with him this week. Jackson is scheduled to announce a decision August 19. His finalists include Alabama, Auburn, Florida, FSU, Georgia, LSU, Michigan and Ohio State. Rumor has it Jackson wants to play with Justin Fields (mentioned above) at the next level. Some think UGA leads for Jackson, but Auburn and FSU are very much in contention. I don't see Jackson committing to Alabama.

Seth Williams, four-star wide receiver from Paul W. Bryant High School in Cottondale, Alabama
The latest:
It's amazing how very little Williams has talked throughout his recruitment. Some believe he's not a take for Alabama. I have not been able to get a good read on him for several months, and that's not typically the case with me for an in-state prospect. I do know Williams is a take. Williams visited Alabama on Wednesday. Right now, I don't see him in Alabama's class.

Justin Watkins, four-star athlete from East Ridge High School in Clermont, Florida
The latest:
Watkins also attended the Champions Cook-Out. Watkins has decommitted three times during his recruitment. Are you eager for a commitment now or on signing day? I hear the visit went really well, and he's a definite take.

Matthew Hill, four-star athlete from Brookwood High School in Snellville, Georgia
The latest:
Hill revealed a top three on Wednesday: Alabama, Auburn and South Carolina. Hill visited Alabama in June and was very impressed. I don't have a very good read on what he will do. A decision may come sometime in August. It's always looked like Auburn. He's a take for Alabama, but not necessarily considered a major target.

Tight ends
Dominick Anderson, four-star tight end from Arizona Western in Yuma
The latest:
Anderson attended the Champions Cook-Out on Friday, and stayed in Tuscaloosa through the weekend for an official visit. Anderson favored Alabama in the spring, but Oregon took the lead after taking a trip to Eugene. It seems like Alabama has regained the edge. Alabama considers Anderson the best tight end in the country (JuCo or HS). I think Alabama is in very good shape with the decision next Tuesday.

Luke Ford, four-star tight end from Cartersville High School in Illinois
The latest:
The former Arkansas commitment named Alabama his leader after taking his first trip to the Capstone. Ford has taken several other trips since his visit to Alabama. It doesn't look like he has a favorite at this time. Alabama likes Ford, and will accept a commitment. Anderson will announce a decision next week. I think Ford will go elsewhere if Anderson picks Alabama.

Michael Parker, three-star tight end from Westminster Christian in Huntsville, Alabama
The latest
: Every year it seems like a new in-state player emerges during the summer camp. Parker is that player in the 2018 class. The 6-foot-6, 235-pound prospect shined at Alabama's camp in June, and returned in July for another session. He earned an offer from Auburn in June. Alabama has yet to offer, but has expressed heavy interest. Parker is set to return to Tuscaloosa on Thursday for an unofficial visit. There is a good chance Alabama extends an offer in the near future. Parker grew up an Alabama fan. I've seen it mentioned about Parker as a possible grayshirt or blueshirt candidate. It's possible.

Glenn Beal, three-star tight end from John Curtis Christian in River Ridge, Louisiana
The latest:
Beal was in attendance for the cook-out, and worked out in Tuscaloosa the following day. He was once considered a tight end target, but now is considered more as a jumbo athlete. He performed well in camp. Alabama will probably still wait to see him a little bit more this season before making a major push. It's possible to see him on the offensive or defensive line in college.
The only other player

Alabama is still recruiting is Will Mallory, four-star tight end from Providence School in Jacksonville, Florida (Miami commitment). Alabama considers Mallory one of the best in the country at his position. Mallory appears solid with the Hurricanes, but it has not stopped Alabama from recruiting him.

Offensive line

Alabama reeled in the first OL commitment of the 2018 class on Friday. Tommy Brown, four-star offensive tackle from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California, jumped on board. The Alabama's legacy commitment did not come as a surprise.

Alabama is still looking to add more talent in this year's recruiting class. It seemed early on the Crimson Tide would not take more than three offensive linemen. The number may end up at four. Alabama has several top targets, and some who favor the Tide.

Nick Petit-Frere, four-star offensive tackle from Berkeley Prep in Tampa, Florida
The latest:
Petit-Frere did not visit Alabama this summer. Some will look at that and say it means Alabama is not in the picture . He was scheduled to attend the cook-out, but had to cancel at the last minute. Petit-Frere has remained in almost daily communication with offensive line coach, Brent Key. Alabama feels very good about where it stands with the elite lineman. Alabama considers him one of the best tackles in the country. The decision may easily come down to Alabama and Notre Dame.

Penei Sewell, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Desert Hills High School in St. George, Utah
The latest
: There really isn't any change with Sewell. Alabama still feels very good about its chances to land his commitment. It still looks like he will commit sometime before the season. A date has not been set.

William Barnes, Rivals100 offensive tackle from Apopka High School in Florida
The latest:
Barnes had a great visit to Alabama a few weeks ago. He attended Florida's Friday Night Lights Camp after the visit to Tuscaloosa. Some thought he might go ahead with a commitment to the Gators. Barnes decided to hold off, and says a decision will come on signing day. Barnes is a definite take for Alabama. I think it's a close battle between the two schools. He will take official visits before making a decision.

Emil Ekiyor, four-star offensive tackle from Cathedral High School in Indianapolis, Indiana (Michigan commitment)
The latest:
Ekiyor was in Tuscaloosa last weekend. It was his second visit to Alabama since committing to the Wolverines. He had a very good showing at Alabama's camp. He remains a target for UA. Alabama believes it is in the race for Ekiyor, but it will come down to the official visits. He remains committed to Michigan.

Jarrett Bell, offensive tackle from Norco High School in California
The latest:
Bell attended camp a few weekends ago. He earned an offer from UA after his performance. Alabama is very high on him. UA may still want to watch him a little bit this fall, but it seems like they are going full steam ahead.

Ohio State commitment Matthew Jones, four-star defensive tackle from Eramus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York, is still recruited by Alabama. Alabama is recruiting him as an offensive lineman with hopes to get him on campus this fall.

Jerome Carvin,
four-star offensive guard from Cordova High School in Tennessee, had a very good work-out on Saturday. Alabama may take another look at him this fall. The word is if he gets ready to commit then Alabama will probably take him.

A few other linemen Alabama likes and will accept commitments from based on size and potential-Kwatrivious Johnson, three-star offensive tackle from Greenwood High School in Mississippi (great showing at Alabama's camp) and Daniel Faalele, four-star offensive tackle from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida. Both are 6-foot-9, 350+.

Defensive front

Alabama reeled in a commitment from Stephon Wynn, Rivals100 defensive end from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida, this summer. A pleasant surprise. Alabama likes Wynn's potential and his athletic ability for his size.

Bobby Brown, four-star defensive tackle from Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas
The latest
: Brown was the defensive star of Alabama's camp this summer. He shot up the recruiting board, and is one of Alabama's key targets. It looks like Brown will hold off from making a decision until sometime in November. It could bode well for Alabama especially if he makes it in town for the LSU game. Brown's decision appears to come between Alabama and Texas A&M.

Coynis Miller, four-star defensive tackle from Jackson-Olin High School in Birmingham
The latest:
Miller has debated a few different times on a commitment timeline. He considered a commitment prior to the start of the summer. Then considered a commitment sometime in August. It looks like Miller will wait, and take visits during the fall. It's a very tight battle right now between Alabama, Auburn and Florida. Miller wants to make sure he is making the right decision, and does not want to go back on his word when he commits. I think it's best just to let this one play out, and see what happens this fall. He remains a big target for UA.

Jalen Cunningham, four-star defensive tackle from St. Clair County High School in Odenville, Alabama
The latest
: Alabama still really likes Cunningham. They like the way he has changed his body in the last few months. It's hard to find big guys with the type of athleticism and footwork Cunningham possesses. Alabama wants to see him after he recovers from his turf toe surgery. He will have a spot if Alabama likes what it sees. Alabama needs big bodies.

Jeffery Johnson, three-star defensive tackle from Brookhaven High School in Mississippi
The latest:
Another similar situation as Cunningham. Alabama likes Johnson a lot based on his junior film. However, he's been held out of all football activities since May due to a high number of muscle enzymes. He was recently cleared to start working out and practicing again. He attended the cook-out last week, and has a lot of interest in Alabama. Alabama will wait to see him this fall before making a decision, but I'm told he is definitely UA will consider.

I am starting to hear, mentioned the other day, Alabama may take two JuCo defensive linemen. Alabama really likes Caleb Tremblay, four-star defensive tackle from American River Community College in Sacramento. He was a star at Alabama's camp, and earned an offer from Nick Saban. Alabama appears in very good shape.

Teair Tart-Spencer
, four-star defensive tackle from East Mississippi Community College in Scooba, and Tayland Humphrey, four-star defensive tackle from Hutchinson Community College in Kansas, are the other two guys Alabama really likes in the JuCo ranks. Tart-Spencer has visited Alabama a few times, and Humphrey recently made a stop in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama will continue to recruit Clemson commitment Darnell Jefferies, three-star defensive tackle from Newton High School in Covington, Georgia. Jefferies has been at or near the top of Alabama's DL board for a long time. Alabama hopes to get him in town for a game this fall.

DE/OLB/Jack

Alabama may miss on some guys who are rated five stars, but they feel really good about some other guys. Alabama is also very excited about the progress of a commitment.

Jordan Davis, Rivals100 defensive end from Southwind High School in Memphis, committed to Alabama in November. Alabama knew he was a very good defensive athlete. Well...Davis has really blossomed since his commitment. Alabama likes him as a future outside backer, but he also could grow into a DE. Alabama is comparing him a little bit to Terrell Hall (Lewis). They won't really know what position he can play until he arrives because he continues to grow and develop. Alabama is stoked about his commitment.

Cameron Latu, Rivals100 defensive end from East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah
The latest
: Alabama is very high on Latu. He is considered a freak athlete. He can play outside linebacker or defensive end. Like Davis, it just depends on how much he grows. Latu attended the cook-out and spent the weekend in Tuscaloosa. Alabama feels very good about its chances with Latu. A decision could happen soon.

Eyabi Anoma, Rivals100 defensive end from St. Francis High School in Baltimore, Maryland
The latest:
Anoma has visited Alabama a few times and will return this fall. He is also expected to return to Alabama for an official visit. Anoma is recruited by Tosh Lupoi. He is a big-time target for Alabama. He is also one Alabama feels it has a very good chance to land. It looks like he will wait a while before making a decision.

Andres Fox, three-star defensive end from Mobile Christian in Mobile, Alabama
The latest
: Fox received an offer from Alabama earlier this year, but they still wanted to see him during spring practice/maybe camp before going full speed on trying to lure him to Tuscaloosa. Fox impressed during spring evaluation, and Alabama turned up the heat. He worked out at Alabama last Saturday, and once again impressed Nick Saban, Jeremy Pruitt and the rest of the defensive staff. Alabama and Auburn are battling for Fox. I think with Alabama going full steam ahead a great chance to land his commitment.

Adam Anderson, Rivals100 defensive end from Rome High School in Georgia
The latest:
Anderson recently decommitted from LSU. He has since started taking a lot of visits including one last Saturday to Alabama. Anderson did not work-out. He was just in town hanging out with the coaches and players. He had a great visit. The visit puts Alabama in mix. That's really all there is to say right now.

Micah Parsons, five-star defensive end from Harrisburg High School in Pennsylvania
The lates
t: Parsons had a great three day visit to Alabama a few weeks ago. I don't believe Alabama took the lead. I still think he stays a little closer to home- Ohio State remains the favorite. However, Alabama will receive an official visit from Parsons. You really don't know what all can happen during the season especially on official visits.

K.J. Henry, five-star defensive end form West Forsyth High School in Clemmons, North Carolina
The latest:
Henry has made quite a few trips to Tuscaloosa including a couple of days spent at the Capstone in June. No, he did not attend the Cook-Out. Some see it as a sign of lack of interest. I see it as he just had trips scheduled elsewhere. I don't think Alabama is in the driver's seat. He will commit elsewhere if he decides soon IMO.

I know some may see this as a huge disappointment if Alabama does not get Parsons or Henry. Alabama thinks Davis, Latu, Eyabi, Fox or Anderson are all very capable players. Alabama considers these guys freak athletes. You never know- Henry or Parsons could surprise and commit to Alabama. It might be great, but Alabama is fine if they can get other top targets on board.

Inside/Outside LB
Alabama reeled in a big target earlier this summer in Quay Walker, four-star linebacker from Crisp County High School in Cordele, Georgia.

JJ Peterson, Rivals100 linebacker from Colquitt County High School in Moultrie, Georgia
The latest:
Alabama's No.1 LB target spent last Friday and Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Alabama feels very good about the current position with Peterson. He has stated he wants to make a decision before the start of the season. We will see if he decides soon. Alabama is in great shape.

Vernon Jackson, three-star athlete from Boling High School in Texas
The latest
: Jackson is a name not often mentioned. He is a top target for Alabama. He was in Tuscaloosa for A-Day, and also for the Champions Cook-Out. Alabama likes his size at linebacker. They compare him to guys like Chris Allen and VanDarius Cowan. Just an impressive, big athlete who can move and become a great defender at the college level. Jackson is set to announce a decision on August 26. I'm hearing it's a tight race between Alabama and Texas A&M.

Brandon Kaho, four-star linebacker from Reno High School in Nevada
The latest:
Another prospect who earned an offer from Alabama during camp. Kaho is committed to BYU, but giving Alabama strong consideration.

Defensie Backs
Alabama is excited about Jalyn Armour-Davis, four-star cornerback from St. Paul's in Mobile. A lot of things to like about JAD. I've heard some Marlon Humphrey comparisons lately.

Nadab Joseph, four-star safety from Catholic High School in Hialeah, Florida
The latest:
Things continue to look good for Alabama. A decision may come soon. Joseph is recruited by Alabama as a corner. He can play a few positions. It may depend on who else Bama gets in this class. Alabama may need him more at safety instead of corner if UA adds guys like Tyson Campbell and/or Josh Jobe.

Tyson Campbell, Rivals100 cornerback from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida.
The latest
: Get your popcorn ready. The visit to Alabama on Monday could not have gone any better. He probably will wait a little while before making a decision. Alabama made a strong move for the elite prospect. Corner is a big position of need. Campbell is getting the full court press from the Alabama defensive coaches including Nick Saban.

Josh Jobe, four-star cornerback from Columbus High School in Miami (Miami commitment)
The latest:
I really wouldn't worry too much about Jobe not visiting Alabama last week. Alabama is still strongly in the mix. He will take an official visit to Alabama prior to making a final decision. Miami is certainly a challenge to battle for the local star, and the Hurricanes with an impressive recruiting class. Alabama definitely believes its still in it, and will remain in the race until the end.

Patrick Surtain Jr., five-star cornerback from American Heritage High School in Plantation, Florida.
The latest:
Surtain visited Alabama last week for the Champions Cook-Out. It was huge to get him on campus to set up possible trips in the fall. One source told me the general feeling is Surtain will go to LSU. Another source informed me on Tuesday Alabama feels it has made up significant ground and still in the race. Surtain expects to wait until after he takes official visits to make a decision. Bama is in it, so that's the positive going forward.

Alabama is still working on Kelvin Joseph, Rivals100 safety from Scotlandville High School in Baton Rouge. Joseph remains committed to LSU. He visited Alabama in June, and expects to return during the season. In my opinion, I can see Nadab flipping more than Kelvin at this time.

Jaycee Horn, four-star cornerback from Alpharetta High School in Georgia, is still in play for Alabama. Alabama likes Horn a lot, but when UA has a shot with its top 3 pure corners- Jobe, Surtain, Campbell- it's hard to take other corners right now.

Alabama will continue to recruit Kyler McMichael, Rivals100 cornerback from Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross, Georgia. McMichael committed to Clemson instead of Alabama. Alabama will try to get him on campus for an official visit or at least for a game this fall.

Trey Dean, four-star cornerback from Dutchtown High School in Hampton, Georgia, earned an offer from Alabama at camp last week. Alabama will wait before accepting a commitment because of the guys listed above. Horn is also higher on the board than Dean.

One JuCo player to keep a close watch is Deldrick Abrams, three-star cornerback from Independence Community College in Kansas. Abrams is committed to Colorado. Alabama really likes him, and very possible UA will make a strong move with his ability to graduate in December.

Alabama has some great DB options and targets. UA doesn't need to run out of room and take other guys knowing it still has a chance with Jobe, Campbell and Surtain. Best to just let things play out. Let these guys enjoy visits this fall and see how it goes. You never know what might happen at certain schools- coaching changes, performance on the field, etc...
