🏈 #2 gotta retire from football. No coming back from this.

The fried pickled okra was good though, never had that before.
I've mentioned the soul food restaurant just up the street a few times in our conversations. I'd seen it on a menu at a place called Boxcar Betty's. The dish, in that place, just didn't fit in my head.

At Nigel's it was pretty tasty.

In new orleans for a few days. Anyone have any non tourist traps to eat at? Tried Liuzza's by the tracks yesterday, looked like it was going to be good from the outside, waitress looked like she hated life though so had me wondering. It sucked.

Hard for me to say what's a tourist trap and what isn't in some cases.... I'll tell you some places I enjoy though... Spoiler, I really don't eat often at real fancy places... chandeliers, square plates, and cloth napkins type joints. Just not usually my vibe and I have a hard time forking over a lot of money for a plate of food... same reason I won't buy those $3 20. oz drinks in gas stations... just on a bigger scale I guess.

Anyway...

Fiorella's Cafe - Out of the way, so definitely not a tourist trap. Had a good Po-Boy there.

Commander's Palace - Ok, this place actually is fancy and pricy, but if you're into that (or on an expense acct), it's worth it.

Domilise's - A hole in the wall joint, again off the regular path some. Good Po-Boys though (see a theme here with me?)

Willie Mae's Scotch House - Years ago, the fried chicken was dynamite. They've more recently moved to downtown and I've heard it's just different now, still good, but not as good and lost some of it's appeal form the old location.

Port of Call - Some may say it's overrated, but I LOVE this place. Really good burger and baked potato. A little off the path but not far. If you get a loaded potato, the bacon bits are those cheap bright red crunchy kind, which always makes me laugh, but it works.

Coop's Place - Like Port of Call, not too far off the French Quarter path. Just real good cajun food though, they play all the hits from red beans and rice and etouffee to cajun fried chicken and cajun pasta.

Places close to the Quarter, which means more tourists...

Mothers and/or Johnny's- Both have good Po-boys.

Deanie's - Really good soups and gumbos... never had a bad meal there. You can pretty much close your eyes, point to something on the menu and not go wrong in my experience.

My disclaimer here is that it has been a while since I've been, so I'm not sure if any of these places have changed much (other than Willie Mae's). Hopefully not... but those are all places I've enjoyed. Truthfully though, competition is so high there, it's hard to have a bad meal somewhere.

Also, I'd recommended the WWII Museum if you get time. I've embarrassingly never gotten a chance to go as of yet, but I've heard nothing up A+ reviews of it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Wife wants to go back to Mr B's for the BBQ shrimp she had about 17 years ago, similar prices as Commanders palace but she wants to go.
I'm more your speed in restaurants though not high on bread so I like a Po boy every now and then but it isn't my go to. I'll try to check a couple of those places out while we're here.
We're over in Belle Chasse on base so 45 min ride over to the Quarter and I'm in a dually. May find a decent place to park and uber in or just uber from here.

Have fun and stay safe. I don't go there as much as I used to... went a good bit years back when my BIL had a house on Algiers Point... was easy to ferry over to the other side and hit the Quarter and such. Fun times. If @Kirk Van de Graaff were to pop in, he goes about once a year... I'm sure he'd have some better suggestions than what I threw out there.

Meant to say we saw the WWII Museum yesterday and we said we were going to try to go. I live with 4 females though so I've learned to not get terribly upset when plans change. If I go I'll let you know.

@Brandon Van de Graaff We made it to the WWII Museum and it was nice. The layout is not very intuitive or well marked as it's in 6 different buildings with no marked path but it's supposed to be done kind of in order of the war. A lot to read, if you read all of the signage it would take at least a day. We were there probably 3 or 4 hours and missed reading a lot but my 7 year old was anxious to get to the next dog tag station which adds a bit more time as each one takes 5 min or more and you have to wait at a lot of them. If you didn't know, you get a dog tag at the beginning and you follow along the war with the soldier or Sailor. It's interesting but could've been done better I think. There's also a 30 min movie that you have to guess what time you'll get to or do like the attendant suggested and go to the middle of the Museum first, catch the movie and then come back to the start. It's also a bit high. $185 for 5 with the military discount that saved us about $50. In all I would say it's worth it but give yourself plenty of time and eat before you go. I was expecting a couple of hours to visit so was hungry by the time we left.
Went to Deanie's afterwards and it was good. BBQ shrimp and fried seafood were really good, gumbo was good but the roux and seasonings were light for my taste.

For future reference on places to eat in New Orleans: A daily routine at a place where my brother used to work was he and several co workers would get together first thing in the morning and decide on where to have lunch. One Friday my brother suggested Maspero's. He and three others then went to their supervisor and asked for the remainder of the day off. With permission granted they then proceeded to drive to New Orleans for lunch at Maspero's. From Irondale! That place must be good!
