Venables was never run roughshod over - he had to play 2nd fiddle behind Mike Stoops for years, but even then OU had elite defenses in the first half of the Stoops/Venables tenure. Then Brent got a shot to run the show for Dabo, and he's been lights out.
Pelini made a name as a 2 loss National champ DC under Les, with Saban's players. Then he went to Nebraska and after year 3 started to get worked over by good offensive minds (Sarkisian, Todd Monken for example). Then the moved to the Big Ten and immediately started getting schooled by teams with middling talent (Brady Hoke's Michigan, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and later on Minnesota). Urban ran up 62 on him with his worst tOSU team.
