I can remember some years ago there was a stabbing at the local TGIFridays. Word is it was over the pronunciation of the word Salmon. Evidently she thought the L was silent.

Every so often I get someone at my store asking where the “Sa’mon” is at.

I would hope it was "every so often someone comes in asking for the SaLmon."

The pronunciation of often drives me a little crazy.

Yes, I am on the Gulf Coast area.

When they ask for it I have to stop ask them to say again. When they do I remember about the stabbing incident and say “Oh, Salmon”

Maybe Salmon was referring to a stinch coming from a particular part of the anatomy..
