There can't be many clips worse than this:

Woody Hayes slugs the guy who intercepted a Buckeye pass. OSU fired Woody's tee-hiney the next day.

I've always wondered what was the reasoning behind that? Was he just upset that he intercepted it, or was the player talking smack to his players?

Hayes deserved to be fired, but it's a shame that he is remembered for that one act. He was a tough competitor and a good coach, but he also took an intense interest in his players' educations, up to an including tutoring them in English on Sunday afternoons.

RTR,

Tim

If it were just the "one act", he probably wouldn't have been fired. He was notorious for beating the crap out of his own players - problem was, this wasn't his player.

He's right. Woody Hayes acts of terror are a dime a dozen. He was literally the last of a dying breed.

Ohio State vs Clemson in the '78 Gator Bowl, I think. Tiger linebacker Charlie Bauman intercepted an Art Schlichter pass to stop OSU final drive and seal a Clemson win.

Thanks, Pirate. I thought it was the Gator Bowl because I seem to remember the situation being discussed during Bama's Sugar Bowl game that year. I didn't see the game but I remember seeing the highlights of it.

I saw that play. Could not believe what I saw. Took the replay to confirm it. Ohio State was coming back going to win the game had all the mo going their way and that sealed the deal for Clemson.

Danny Ford the coach for Clemson. I think that was the year they won the NC. IF not it was the next.

Whatever happened to Ford? Out of coaching, I assume?

Hayes had been slipping into outbursts like this in the latter part of his career. I remember an incident around this time where he disagreed with an official's call and destroyed the first down marker.

In fairness to Hayes, though, many of the OSU guys who played for him had the same reverence for him as Bama men have for Bryant.

I think he lives near Clemson, retired from coaching and farms.

I was wrong about that year being NC. OSU games was in 78. Title was in 81.

Correct, a farm n Pendleton, SC. He's scheduled to be in a coaching clinic in Columbia with HS coaches in May.

Danny Ford was a decent ball player at Bama. He is also from Gadsden, AL.

Oh and Clemson National Champs 1981
