🏈 With Beamer retiring........

Dan Wolken tweeted out that Smart would be "very interested" in Va Tech should they be interested in him......

In another thread we discussed the possibility of replacements at DC should Smart take off to be a HC somewhere. General consensus originally centered around would we hire within? First two names that come to mind are Mel Tucker (DB coach with NFL DC experience) or Tosh Lupoi the linebacker coach who has proven to be a hell of a recruiter and could fit the mold of what Smart did 8 years ago and be a young mold-able mind for DC.

With Beamer's retirement, makes me wonder if Bud Foster would get a call from CNS. Foster has been loyal to Beamer and is considered one of the top DC's in FBS. Would he be willing to fall under the tight leash of Saban or does he go elsewhere with free reign and make the most money possible? Foster is 56 and currently has a base salary of 600k. I don't even know if it would be a possibility, but is thought provoking. Foster and Saban together defensively, could be a nightmare for opposing offenses. Nobody thought we would end up with Kiffen, who knows what Saban is thinking.

Might be possible to see Sal Sunseri come back in some capacity. Don't know if CNS would offer him the DC position (the 10rc deal was abysmal but I think that was on Dooley as much as it was on Sal) but if Tucker or Lupoi were promoted SS might come back. He is currently with the Raiders so I don't know if he would consider it or not.

IDK if Sal would be in the running......granted CNS has hired guys back even if they run their mouth after moving on elsewhere (Insert Lance Thompson quote here), but Sunseri was not happy that Vinnie got hurt playing special teams his last year at UA, even though he didn't have any contact on the play, if memory serves me correct.

Either way, TP dropped hints back in the day that Sal had issues with the way CNS done things.........he might come back, but my money would be elsewhere.

I knew there was some stink in the air with Sunseri but never knew if it was all about Vinnie or if there was something else. May not even be an option. I really hated to see SS got to knoxville at the point he did as I knew he was at the tail end of the Dooley era and was trying to install a 3-4 scheme with marginal 4-4 athletes

I think tenure under CNS is the last consideration. Right now Alabama is in a unique situation in that Saban doesn't have to consider only those who express interest. With at least 10 HC jobs open, that means there are at least 10 DC who will be looking for jobs.

I wonder if Foster is interested in being the next VT HC.

I read yesterday that he's due 1.5 million as a "severance" if he isn't offered a job on the new staff. Now may be the ideal time to step away from VT and make a name for himself other than Beamer's DC.

@rammerjammer Wolken also said he'd talked to Kirby "maybe twice in his life." That certainly adds a lot of credibility to what "he heard."
