🏈 Win the toss - kick or receive?

Does anyone have a stat of Alabama winning the toss and what we do with it? I noticed this weekend that we won the toss yet elected to receive the ball. Just seems like old school notion was always you win the toss you elect to kick and then receive in 2nd half.

I wonder if it has to do with being home or away, what type offense the other team has, the feel of the game and the week leading up to it, etc... Knowing Saban there is absolutely nothing about our game plan that isn't planned out to the nth degree. Just curious about the decision behind the toss.

I'm pretty sure that VT won the toss, know Arkansas did. I can't say on the others, but we've taken the ball in four of our six games.

I'd say the results are pretty damn high for us taking the ball and what happens. Winning 19 of our last 21 games makes that an easy "guess."

I know that we did win the VT toss.

I think CNS knows what he has in his defense and is not wrried about going 3 and out on the first possession. He knows the D will hold. With that thought in mind, why not try to get first blood?

OK, I know VT had the first possession. In that case, I'd think he was thinking field position. You can see that mentality often with his game choices.

I feel like if you are playing an away game and you have the choice, you would be best to take the ball first. This allows your team to score first and put the home field advantage down to a lower level.

If your home, I think it doesn't make a difference. I just feel if you get the ball first and can score on the road, it can take the crowd out of the game early.

In the old days (not sure when the rule changed) the options were to receive, kick, or defend a goal. I do remember that unless there were extreme weather conditions Coach Bryant always took the football when we won the toss. Now, with another option (deferring your choice to the second half) it seems to me (memory but no stats) that pre Saban we mostly chose to defer when we won the toss. Saban seems to like the idea of taking the football first.

Yep, post-rule change, Saban almost always takes the ball.
