🏈 Will McElwain Leave after the season?

We should scrap those QB draws though. McElroy cant run, even when it works, I dont like putting him in position to get hit.

It has paid huge dividends in the past. What I find ironic, is about 1/3 to 1/2 way through the season they asked 3 previous offensive minds what they thought about Bama's O and what they would like to see more of. One was Dave Radar one coach was Homer Smith, and I can't remember the 3rd coach in the article.

I digress. Fact is Homer Smith stated the fact of how defenses opened up in the middle of the field quite a bit and gave GMac the opportunity to run. He said he would like to see more designed QB runs. That week I saw our first "designed" QB run. Not pretty, but extremely effective. It just creates one more thing to account for.

Homer knows him some O

okay, forgive me if i'm outta line here, but the majority of the red zone problems we had this year wasnt the players,it was the play calling.Personally, I dont think the guy is a good OC,but I think he IS a great position coach

I don't know if I would say he can't run. He has shown very respectable legs at time. He does not want to rely on them as his true strengths are in his poise and arm. Still, we have all seen Greg break a few decent runs.

I totally disagree. You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but a lot of our issues I have seen in the redzone have been SIM (self induced misery) Fumbled snaps, bad throws, bad hand-off exchanges. It had nothing to do with play calling and had to do with execution. Saban hammered this home in several interviews. We had many games where we screwed ourselves simply because of execution. Had nothing to with play calling.

Granted McElwain could probably do better, no doubt we could do a heck of a lot worse.

Everyone's entitled to their opinions, but the numbers do not support any concerns over offensive production. This is particularly true when you consider the totality of what Bama has done in regard to scoring margins and ball control. Consider Saban's key goals of not doing things that get you beat (including excessive risk taking) and controlling the clock. Bama is averaging a little less than 32 points per game this year, which is pretty impressive and good for a 25th national ranking. Our time of possession (33 minutes) and margin of victory (21 points), however, are both 5th best in the nation. Bama has the ability to move it quickly through "dazzle", but it's at greater risk. In twelve games, Bama has turned the ball over just ten times, third best in the nation.

The mentality of playing good defense, controlling time of possession and keeping turnovers to a minimum has us one game from the BCS title game.

I like it.

Tim

The only time that I really have an issue with (and could have cost us dearly!) was against Tennessee. Our bread and butter offense gets us down to around the 5. Ingram was running strong. It was almost halftime. We have the momentum, and it looks like we'll finish with a TD. Then 3 straight passes to Julio when he was struggling to get open. No TD.:frown: That series still sticks in head.

Agree with that 100%. This is the only time I can remember actually questioning the play calling.

As many times as I've been totally blown away by the ineptedness of a play call, one of those calls has been masterfully called, and worked. So, it's a bit of a razor's edge there. PLaying aggressive on offense sometimes calls for you being less so or more so at different times.

I've just seen too many dropped balls and overthrown balls to chastise the OC this year. It's come down to execution too much to throw out the baby with the bathwater. I think McElroy tends to get excited on some plays, and that comes with less experience at this level. Sometimes, I think GMac actually intends to overthrow rather than underthrow and risk a pick.

It works so well, and we've scored a lot of points. I expect some fun stuff this Saturday.

Coach Mac can call all the vertical pass plays he wants, but they aren't going to be thrown as long as the QB doesn't actually let it rip.
Lot of truth to this. The QB has to pull the trigger....I think the issues on offense lies with both playcalling combined with QB play. The games we have had great offensive production is when both were clicking on the same page. It will take our best offensive game to beat Florida.
