šŸˆ Why are the playoff semifinals on New Year's Eve again?

I saw this and just wanted to punch this journalist in the face. They act as if Oklahoma, Clemson, Michigan State l, and Alabama fans are just going to go about their business and forget the games. News flash, but this is why college football is the juggernaut it is, because fans plan around the games, no matter what's in the way. Screw going out and getting drunk on just another night in the lives of us, I'll be watching my boys tee it up instead of posting selfies on Facebook at a trendy New Years party to feel kewl.

It's because there's only so much airtime available on the networks that have broadcast rights. ESPN has gobbled up the majority of the games and they won't all fit on New Year's Day. Add to that the desire to have sufficient rest time before the championship game, and they all move to NYE. It has absolutely nothing to do with anyone's NYE parties.

No, it's because the NYD Bowls, namely the Rose and Sugar, would not move their games to Jan 2. The CFP, and rightly so, does not want the playoff games in competition with those Bowls.

Of course the fans of the teams are going to watch. It's everyone else that will "go about their business and forget the games" to whom they are referring. Ratings for the second game will be pitiful.

I highly doubt the Alabama game is going to have pitiful numbers. I'm willing to bet it will be way better than the 4PM game. A lot of people will plan around these games, more than just those teams' fans. We don't do anything for New Year's Eve anyways, so I'm more than happy to watch us play rather than watching Ryan Seacrest for ten hours do a countdown or be on the roads on the deadliest night of the year.

Seven of the next 10 years also. Only when in Rose and Sugar will they be on NYD.

College Football Playoff

to me, it's because i don't care. i'll watch the game regardless of what date, what time, or what channel it's on.

no party is more important than that, especially not some new year's eve party where the same things happen every year; somebody gets too drunk, somebody gets into a fight, somebody passes out way too early, etc., etc., etc.

If you're going to anybody's house for a party, the game will be on. If you're going to a hotel or other "pay for play" party, there will be a TV nearby.

The Sugar Bowl has been in the afternoon before. Who broadcasts the Sugar Bowl?

30 years ago? ESPN does the Rose and Sugar.

There are but 5 Bowls on NYD, therefore a lack of air time is not the issue. The issue is that the Rose and the Sugar wish to play their games on the exact same day and at the exact same time(s) that the CFP wants to play their playoff games. Well, F*** the CFP! The Rose and Sugar have no obligation to move their games. The CFP should have enough sense to play the damn games on the 2nd. Especially this season, inasmuch as the 2nd falls on Saturday.

i hardly ever do anything or go anywhere for new year's. i used to do the party thing, but that was years ago and i got it out of my system. i did the whole club/bar scene, but now i'm just a stay-at-home type of guy who is much happier.

The traditional New Year's bowls are: Sugar, Rose, Cotton, Fiesta, Orange. Add the Citrus and Outback. All are broadcast by ESPN/ABC. Due to their location, the Rose and Fiesta need a later time slot to get an audience. Fewer households get ESPN2 or ESPNU so those aren't good options. So to make as much money as possible (ESPN/ABC needs to recoup the cost they bid to get the rights and therefore need as much of an audience guarantee they can make to sell to advertisers) they need to distribute the games to avoid cannibalizing the audiences. To eliminate the cannibalization, they need to spread the bowls across more days. Yes, it's about the money but also the marketing of the CFP for future years (and future $$$) for the schools, ESPN, the NCAA and bowls.

If this becomes a trend, this will be an annual event that yiu do for New Years Eve. You'll do your shit in the morning, then hang around with the family and watch football. ESPN will own a day, much like how the NFL owns a day of the week.

$$$$$$$$..... The powers that be know how to make it and the best way to do it
They better have more sense than anyone else with common sense of they want this one to work out.

The fans will watch, regardless. The problem with a NYE game, particularly one that will not be ending until just before the ball drops (EST) is that you lose the casual fan.... and there are far more casual fans than die hard fans.

If the game is on NYE you have Bama and MSU fans watching, and a sizeable portion of the college football audience. Hipster douche and his band of merry fellows aren't watching though. The guy who like football but doesn't have a team isn't watching. The ritzy couple that enjoys football parties without a clue of what's going on, isn't watching. Etc., etc., etc.

It just makes no sense to compete with one of the bigger holidays that don't involve family/friend time when there are other viable options available.

I have a good source into the inner working of these things, and his comment was "some people think they are too smart"
