🏈 What players just aren't cutting it?

Of all the players that start on both sides of the ball. I was wondering if any of you see somebody that just don't seem to be pulling their weight. I will start it off with mine.

Chavis Williams is a senior and starting for the first time. When he is in the game when I pay close attention to him he seems to be always on the outside looking in on every play. Always late getting to the ball. He is never in on the play he is not finishing the play and pursuing the ball like everybody should. I'd rather Jarell go back out there and Nico or Chris or CJ come in the middle with Jarell sliding back in on nickel. Basically our original plan before the official depth chart came out. Chavis not impressive.

I'll tell you, when Shula was the headcoach....scratch that. Before Saban was the head coach, I was always the first one to complain about this person or that person not being in position, not playing to their potential, etc. etc. Now, I don't concern myself with it at all. Saban is what? 29-2 in the last 31 games with a 16 game winning streak? If he thinks Chavis Williams is worthy of a starting position, or thinks he should play 75% to someone else's 25%, I'm not going to question it.

But that's just my opinion.

This team seems to be hitting on all cylinders. I just have a hard time finding fault with the team. Now, on any given play, someone might have been behind the action, or missed a step. It's hard to break down each play without the aid of having one of the coaches allow me to review film with them, an extremely time consuming proposition. I'm sure C. Williams gets out of position from time to time, as does Hightower, Barron, our O line, etc, etc, etc....These guys are mortal, but it's easy to forget that. It's been a long time since we lost a game, and been even longer since we didn't play good football (exceptions being Utah, and UT-09). But this is a team sport, and the TEAM looks spot on, best in the country, to me.

And yes, if you're wondering, we COULD BEAT the Buffalo Bills.

It is 2 games into the seaosn. Bama replaced alot on defense, and have been without their key defensive lineman. I say give it some time and they will gell and it will be fine. I am above calling out individual players. Whats that thing about walking a mile in someone's shoes?

Reminds me of one of the "village idiots", thats what we used to refer to the callers on the post game show back in the days before Saban. Because they were all coaches and had the answer to everything. They did nothing but complain about everything. One called one night and told Chris Stewart that a certain DB couldnt cover his grandma. Chris simply responded your grandma must be pretty good, maybe we should sign her up.

I'm not trying to flame you NTT, but if you haven't already watched Alabama All Access with ESPN you should. I have so much respect for what our players go through and how hard they work. If he isn't putting forth the effort he won't be on the field long. Too much talent on the team for that. The fact the he's out there starting says it all.

I'm not a big believer in playing "let's find the weakest player". As has been said, someone who knows believes he's the best man to start. I believe he rotates out a good bit, but he still had three tackles Saturday. One thing to remember about LB production in a 3-4 is that much of it depends on how strong the defensive line is playing. Perhaps having Marcel in the rotation this weekend might give him a better opportunity to run free.

Tim

Eleven, I agree with you. Dareus will demand double teams and that will free up our LBs to make more plays. Argo, you were spot on as well. Williams has gotten the starting nod for a reason other than his being a senior. CNS isn't going to put you on the field unless you can contribute to the team in a positive way.

Chavis Williams is going to end up surprising some people. He has talent for sure.

I can tell you one that doesn't cut it for sure. Spencer Pennington! Get him the heck out of there, NOW! Woops, my bad, just had a flashback to 2004!

"The Great" Spencer Pennington! I went to Knoxville for the Bama/UT game in 04 with some friends and then bought my mom tickets to the Music City Bowl for Christmas. I felt so bad for Prothro (and DJ Hall for that matter). It just looked funny with short little Prothro trying to jump out of the stadium to catch Spencer's throws that were 15 yards over his head EVERY PLAY.

That Lee Roy Jordan was a slacker. Coach Bryant chastised him once for only getting the ball carriers who were in bounds, and he still didn't straighten up. Hello? WWTLD (What Would Tommy Lewis Do)?

While we're on Coach Bryant, I grew tired of that huckster, too. In addition to his more obvious corporate ties with South Central Bell, Golden Flake and Coke, his subliminal advertising for Catholic charities and headache powders drove me nuts.

Shula ruined Prothro's career. We were up 31-3 in that game against Florida in 2005 when, for some inexplicable reason, Shula had Brodie throwing the ball like we were trailing and time was running out. Why he called that pass play, from Brodie to Prothro, on 4th down, with like 2 minutes to go was beyond me. Just one of the many reasons Shula is now an assistant with the Jacksonville Jaguars!

It was more like nine minutes left. Something that's not well known is that Prothro's injury may have been initiated on a previous play. He told another player that he'd felt a pop in his leg but continued playing. It was a tragedy for such a promising player to have his career end, but I don't fault Shula for playing them in the fourth quarter. Many players play the entire game. Trent ran the ball Saturday, up 21 with three and a half minutes left.

I vividly remember that play. The physical therapist I saw after my knee surgery was good friends with one of Bama's trainers at the time that ended up riding in the ambulance with Tyrone. His bone had broken through the skin and they actually had to clean grass and dirt off the bone from where part of it had dug into the ground when he first snapped it. Thank God for shock, I can't imagine how much pain that guy was feeling after that.

Not sure who said it but I don't feel like I am getting flamed. I appreciate the comments. Conversation is good. Although I am willing to bet that if a game is close in the 4th quarter and we are in a regular defense (3-4) that you will see Jarell slide back over to the Sam spot and Nico or Chris at the Will. I am just saying as long as we are winning Chavis will be the guy in there in regular defense but I will not admit that its our best unit. Nico didn't start 10 games last year for the National Championship team because Chavis is better than him. Jarell is better at Sam than Chavis and Jarell is better at Will than Nico. Saban just don't want Jarell to keep having to switch position constantly during the game he said as much in the depth chart press conference. Nico can't play Sam. Saban was hoping he could thats why he tried him out toward the end of camp at that position. As a matter of fact could someone look into where Nico is working at now that the season is here. Is he working with OLB or ILB?
