What am I looking forward to in Spring practice?
Here is a list of things I'm looking for.
1. Corey Smith -- Is this kid really as good as advertised? He's mentioned that Saban wants him to handle kickoffs and punts. I'd like to see if he can win both spots.
2. Marquis Maze -- Can he win a return spot next to Arenas before the fast kids come in this fall? If he plans on playing as a returner, he needs to have a great spring.
3. Linebackers -- Again, we have some great prospects coming in at LB for the fall practice. If any of these guys already at Bama plan on winning a lot of playing time this fall, spring practice is where they had better show up.
4. Justin Woodall -- He said he gave up baseball because he thinks he will be a major factor in the SS spot this fall. This is kind of shocking to me, but I think he can do it. In order to have a chance at the SS spot though, he needs to have a HUGE spring!!
5. Demetrius Goode -- A 4-star runningback that came in and tore his knee up early in fall camp last year looks to be 100% for spring practice. It's a good thing too, because not only will he be competing against Grant, Coffee and Upchurch this spring..he'll need to win his spot in the rotation before guys like Matchett and Ingram come in this fall.
6. Jeramie Griffin -- It's going to be interesting to see where the top rated fullback from the '07 class fits into our offense. We didn't really use a fullback last season under Applewhite, and when we did it was primarily for blocking. Griffin has enough speed to get out in the flats as a pass option if needed. I guess we'll see where this guy is going to fit in.
7. Offensive line -- Considering we don't really have a lot of guys coming in this fall, most of the offensive line positions will probably be won during the spring drills, so we should see a few good battles.
8. I also look forward to meeting you guys and putting some faces with names. I meant to stop by last year but didn't get around to it. Hope to have a great time this year, and eat plenty of food!!
