💬 Weather? At your place?

Snowing in southern Ohio this morning with roads covered and a couple of inches on the ground. Yes, we are in school and will be until the end of the day.

Yankees and snow days. :grumble: Snowplows, salt piles, snow tires, chains and a road budget that has no end. I was in Danbury Connecticut last winter and my wife and I were piled up in a hotel waiting out a bad snowstorm that was moving in. I was watching the weather on TV and I saw the most amazing thing a southern boy doesn't normally get a chance to watch. They had a cam on a sharp curve coming into the city and literally one car after another was crashing into each other. After about the 7th or 8th car to bite the dust I told my wife, they aren't any better at driving on a sheet of ice than we are.

School systems have really taken a beating the last several years here in Alabama when it comes to weather and releasing early or cancelling all together. It is sad but this is what it has become. A few years ago, we had that ice/snow storm hit and kids got stuck at the schools for a day or two. Schools aren't prepared for that! Parents got stuck with them because they tried to go get them. Kids are better off at home. School systems definitely don't want this happening again!! I live 3 miles from the school where I teach and it took me 45 minutes to get home that day!!!
All it takes is one bus to wreck due to ice and we would see a TON of lawsuits being filed. Parents will sue the bus driver, the bus manufacturer, the school system, board members, and superintendent. The system will have to wade through the false claims from 300+ all claiming to be on that one bus! FUN FUN!! The bus driver will then in turn sue as well, because he was forced to drive the bus in those conditions. It just makes for an ugly scene. Just my two cents!!

But when I went, the best we had on the bus was when it was a heavy rain. More than likely the bus was going to get stuck on a dirt road. :-) One house the bus had to turn around in the driveway!

We use a lot of two hour delays here in Ohio to let the sun get out and warm up the roads. Its not perfect but it helps. Of course, we do have snow plows that are out to clear the snow. Brime is put on before the snow starts falling and then salt is added but it is only good down to a certain temp. Most cities or counties have the big, dump trucks so a couple of blades could be bought to help clear off the main roads.

Where I live in southern Ohio, the hills are very steep and we are very rural. Our county has 9 school systems and one city system. My district is 183 square miles, one of the largest in the state, so we usually have to call off early bc of weather. Our superintendent, transportation director and head bus mechanic are out at 4 am on bad mornings to check the roads. Many districts to our north use the delay because the roads are very flat.

I agree with you though @uagrad93 all it takes is one wreck and somebody will be renaming the school after them. Its a no win situation when the weather is bad, dang if you do and dang if you dont.
