Butch Jones defends himself on radio show

Tennessee coach Butch Jones took an opportunity to defend himself during his weekly appearance on Nashville’s WGFX-FM, 104.5 The Zone on Thursday.

ā€œCompletely untrue,ā€ Jones said when asked of an alleged physical altercation between him and one of his players during preseason camp, according to 247sports.com’s Ryan Callahan.

UT Chancellor Jimmy Cheek said earlier on Thursday that an inquiry found no wrongdoing. Speculation has swirled around a possible altercation between Jones and senior offensive lineman Mack Crowder, according to KnoxNews.com’s Dustin Dopirak.

ā€œI know that the university and our athletics department did their due diligence, and we’re moving forward,ā€ Jones said on the 3HL show. ā€œI can tell you this: All the rumors were completely untrue, and it’s very, very unfortunate that we had to go through this for the last couple days.

ā€œBut we’re moving on, and we’re looking forward to competing on Saturday against a very good Georgia football team.ā€

Jones went on to defend his character. He cited criticism in games as fair, but maintained his innocence in this instance.

ā€œGet on me about the two-point conversion. Get on me about time management or get on me with those things,ā€ he said. ā€œBut I think you guys know me by now. I take great pride in my character.ā€
