Lane Kiffin is gone.
So USC needs to find its next coach, which means message board chatter is wild, rumors about coaches being seen at LAX have already started and athletic director Pat Haden has a whopper of a decision to make. Even Las Vegas books have put odds on it.
Prospects are keeping a close eye on what the Trojans do as well, and many of them have their own opinions. Recruiting is the lifeblood of any program, so keeping recruits happy is important.

About two dozen 2014 and 2015 prospects were asked to give an anonymous answer on which coach they would like to see hired by USC. Some answers were surprising, like this gem from one of the top prospects in California's senior class.
"Pete Carroll," he said. "I would commit on the spot."
When one of the best 2015 prospects heard that response, his rebuttal brought things back to reality.
"He isn't leaving Seattle any time soon," he wrote.
USCFootball.com has released its coaching hot board, and all the discussed names appear on it -- Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Vanderbilt coach James Franklin, Boise State's Chris Petersen, Washington coach Steve Sarkisian, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin and others.

Rivals.com national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell scoffed at the idea that Carroll would leave Seattle to return to USC, saying it would almost be an impossibility, and Farrell said he believes Del Rio could be the wisest choice.
"He's a good coach with USC ties," Farrell said. "People will say, 'Look what he did in Jacksonville.' Well, he actually did a pretty good job for a while there. Things didn't finish well, but the guy can coach.

"I think it's time to go back to somebody who really lives and breathes USC football. He would be the guy I would look at. You can try to pursue Jon Gruden like everyone else has, and I'd assume that would be highly unlikely. You could get a young guy like James Franklin or Kevin Sumlin if you wanted to do that, or you can get somebody who's been with the program like Sarkisian. I just think, when you think of USC football, Jack Del Rio is one of those guys who can relate to the tradition and some of the glory of USC. He brings passion and energy that is infectious to recruits."

Many recruits responded that they would like to see Del Rio as coach, including one prospect committed to another Pac-12 school, a top 2015 recruit who has an offer from the Trojans and one player already committed to USC.
Another top 2015 prospect listed Del Rio fourth on his list behind Sarkisian, UCLA coach Jim Mora (imagine that!) and St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher. No prospect listed Petersen or Sumlin as his top choice. Many liked Sarkisian, who said early Monday he had not been contacted by USC.

A surprising favorite among many recruits in both classes was USC interim coach Ed Orgeron, a great recruiter who has built relationships with many prospects already. If the rest of the season goes well there is a chance Orgeron is retained, but his head coaching tenure at Ole Miss was, politely, a disaster.
Throughout the survey, other names also popped up. Oregon State coach Mike Riley was mentioned by one player. Five-star running back Joe Mixon, who gave permission to use his name in this story, said he hopes USC offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Clay Helton gets a chance at the top job.

Others just want to sit back and watch it play out. A parent of a prominent recruit said he's not qualified to give an informed opinion, that there are so many great coaches it's difficult to pick just one. He -- and many others -- will be closely watching the process, though.
"I can sit back and play Monday morning quarterback," he said.
