With the USC case about to come to a head one way or the other, I found this old article on the subject and thought I'd link it.

If half this stuff is true and there is any justice in the world, USC is as good as finished.

USC in Deep Doodoo?

Yeah, I did my research paper last year on the effect of sports agents on college athletics and I came across this report. That name Lloyd Lake came up awhole lot in my research.

Anything less that what 'Bama got and I will have to consider it a sham. This was institutional if the meaning of the word has any meaning at all. For goodness sakes, Petey Carroll let professional sports agents have free reign on his sidelines and locker rooms.

Only a simpleton would believe for one second that he did not know exactly what was going on with his players. Coaches don't live in a bubble and they know full well what is going on with their players and they can either stop their activities or turn a blind eye, or as I am afraid Carroll did, silently approve of it.

This is much worse than a booster throwing around cash to try to outbid coaches of other teams to influence a player.

Anything less than what 'Bama received for USC and you can pretty much rest assured that the NCAA, like we don't already know it, is crooked as a snake.

What pisses me off is you know damn well that the NCAA has gotten reports in the past about these things yet they waited until some reports from Yahoo Sports and ESPN came out before they began an "investigation".

so the reports I've read is the NCAA will meet with USC 2/19-2/21 to discuss possible sanctions. Does the NCAA normally do this over the weekend?

Sources familiar with the investigation have told Yahoo! Sports that the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions will meet Feb. 19-21 to address what investigators uncovered at USC. According to typical NCAA procedures, if sanctions are necessary, they will be determined and then made public via a news conference within six to eight weeks of the February hearing.

Well, if anyones noticed, the progression and frequency that the NCAA has brought upp this case has coincided with USCs fall from the untouchables in the college football world. I daresay that if they had another dominate year instead of their landmine of a season, this whole matter would still be under a rug. Would I be close if I took this assumption?

It may have been different for us, but I didnt follow the tide at the time. I do know that there is a perception of our state that just exceeds alot of the others around us in the eyes of the more urban areas of the country, althoough unfair, but eh.

When we got wacked upside the head with sanctions we were a pretty mediocre football team.

Of course, Birdman. I am sure that the NCAA despises Yahoo for what they did. Yahoo had to keep "breaking" the story over and over again before ESPN was forced to cover it, thereby causing the NCAA to belatedly acknowledge the situation. Even Pravda or CNN has to eventually cover a story if it will just not go away.

Yahoo, at the time, didn't realize that they weren't supposed to investigate things like reporters did in the old days. I am sure they realize that now and will not be breaking any other stories about anyone anytime soon.

kudos to yahoo for not letting the story die. I've posted about it several times.

With sweetie petey's quick bolt for the Seattle Seahawks, and USC's very quick hire of lil Laney, I just can't help but feel like that they know for a fact the handcuffs are going on them. The hire of Kiffie kind of indicates a "place holder coach who can hold down the fort during probation" type of thing. I think they finally realize that the law of averages has caught up with them.

I will only believe the hammer has fallen down when the penalties are announced in about 8 weeks. Til then, I seriously have doubts in the NCAAs ability to do anything fair and just.

Two things on this. One, the committee meets when it can get its members together since they are from different schools, conferences, and states.

What really jumps out at me is the fact they are taking three days. Normally, meetings like this are handled in a days time and often more than one school will meet with the COI on the same date. Three days?!?!? That tells me they are planning on discussing quite a bit.

I saw mention of that as well, Terry. In one of the articles, the NCAA spokesman mentions having a lot of info to go over. It sounded to me like this was more than usual. If you consider that the football and the basketball programs are being looked into because of allegations, then that makes sense. That doesn't sound good for USC.

Then, you have to add in reviews of the work—or lack of—in their compliance department. This easily will extend into the AD's office and others.

Just as a side note. People have discussed how long this has taken without consideration of just how many aspects Johanningmeir had to look at. I'm sure he spent his time looking a ta lot of different sports programs.

I don't recall how long Johanningmeier and friends spent investigating us, but it seemed like forever. It sure sounds like they are getting the same full body cavity search that we experienced.

With Albert Means...from the start to the announcement was over three years.

And, if I recall, the sanctions were conveniently announced just prior to signing day. The mere fact that we are near 2 weeks beyond signing day now turns my stomach. I think we might be looking at a situation where players can elect to walk out of national letters of committment if the boom is lowered.

Still waiting to see that actually happen.

If USC actually expects significant sanctions and if, as a result, they hired Kiffen as a temp to keep the course, then USC has the most ignorant AD and President in all of college football. If you're expecting penalties, then you're expecting probation. Who worse for the job than a guy that was under all sorts of scrutiny for negative publicity, a record number of secondary violations in his first year and possible major violations?
