BREAKING: 4-star DT signee Kendell Jones will not enroll at Alabama

While most of Alabama’s 2016 class has already reported to campus for the summer, two signees remain off campus.

Jamar King, a junior college defensive end transfer from Mendocino College (Ukiah, Calif.), remains in school improving his final grades. He’s expected to get the grades and enroll at Alabama this summer.

That’s not the case for another defensive lineman.

Kendell Jones, a four-star defensive tackle from Shoemaker High School (Killeen, Texas), will not enroll at Alabama this year after failing to qualify academically, multiple sources told SEC Country. He began junior college classes Monday, his father, Kendell Sr., told SEC Country. Kendell Sr. would not say in which school his son has enrolled.

It is unclear whether Jones needs one year or two at a junior college to be eligible to play NCAA football. If it is one year, he remains bound to Alabama by a signed national letter of intent. If it is two years, he would be free to choose a new NCAA school upon graduating.

When Nick Saban spoke at SEC spring meetings last week, he said one player had not qualified yet, but he did not provide any additional details.

Jones committed to Alabama in May 2015 and did not waver on his commitment after choosing the Crimson Tide over LSU, Texas A&M, Texas and Baylor. He only took one official visit during his recruitment, and that was to Alabama.

The 6-foot-5, 375-pounder nicknamed ā€œHulkā€ was one of three defensive tackle signees in the 2016 class. Raekwon Davis, the four-star who had his own academic issues, and Quinnen Williams were the others.

Defensive tackles were a priority for the 2016 class as Alabama will replace stars A’Shawn Robinson and Jarran Reed along with backups D.J. Pettway and Darren Lake this season. Jones would have likely been sophomore Daron Payne’s backup at nose tackle this season.

Jones was ranked as the nation’s No. 12 defensive tackle and the No. 14 prospect in the state of Texas in the Class of 2016.

I'm sure each case is different, but why can't he just take a Summer school course? I guess if it was SAT issues, that answers it, but with one solid academic year he should be able to transfer in, so why does it take most two years?

ā€œThe comeback is real. I’m still truly in love with Alabama,ā€ Jones said. ā€œCoach Saban called my coach at junior college the other day and told him how they don’t want to lose me. I’m doing everything possible to stay in my books and still working out trying to lose weight.ā€

I find that interesting. It seemed the general consensus was he wouldn't receive another offer from Bama. True DT's are so hard to come by now-a-day.

If this comes to fruition if flies directly in the face of those who have stated "Bama isn't recruiting the same style/type player anymore." (IE: Your Cody type tackles.)
