INSTANT ANALYSIS: Alabama rolls over Fresno State 41-10
Tony Tsoukalas | Alabama team writer

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama’s offense bounced back from a frustrating performance in Week 1 to help to the Crimson Tide blowout Fresno State 41-10 Saturday in its home opener. Here’s how Alabama was able to pull off the win:

Hurts, offense came out strong
Alabama wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. Starting at the Alabama 27-yard line quarterback Jalen Hurts hit Cam Sims on a screen pass for an 18 yard gain. The next play Hurts kept the ball on a read-option play, busting through a hole on the right side before turning on the jets for a 55-yard touchdown run. The two-play drive took just 39 seconds, less time than the ensuing television break, and set the tone early on.

After Alabama stopped Fresno State on a three-and-out, Hurts was back at it again. The sophomore quarterback led the Tide on a 10-play, 62-yard drive culminating in a 32-yard touchdown pass to wide-open tight end Hale Hentges. On Alabama’s next possession, Hurts led the Tide on its third straight scoring drive, taking the team down the field on an 11-play, 75-yard drive capped off by his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon from 3 yards out.

Hurts finished the half 12 of 13 passing for 91 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 119 yards and two more scores on four carries. Alabama totaled 297 yards and 16 first downs in the first half. Hurts finished the game 14 of 18 for 128 yards and a touchdown through the air while rushing for 154 yards and two touchdowns on the ground. Alabama finished with 497 total yards.

Calvin Ridley was the only Alabama receiver to record a reception in the Tide’s Week 1 win over Florida State. Saturday, Alabama showed much more diversity in its passing.

A total of six wide receivers recorded a reception as first-year offensive coordinator Brian Daboll utilized several quick screens early on. Ridley still led the Tide with 45 yards on five catches. Junior Xavian Marks had 24 yards on one reception. Sims had 23 yards on three receptions and was followed by fellow senior Robert Foster with two receptions for 23 yards. True freshmen Henry Ruggs and Jerry Jeudy also recorded their first receptions. Ruggs caught a 16-yard pass from fellow freshman Tua Tagovailoa, while Jeudy tallied an 8-yard reception.

Hentges’ 23-yard touchdown was not only the first reception recorded by an Alabama tight end but also the first time a tight end has been targeted this season. Irv Smith also recorded two receptions for 7 yards.

Alabama also continued to get its running backs involved in the passing game. Bo Scarbrough finished with two receptions for 15 yards, while Najee Harris had a catch for 10 yards.

Four defenders make debuts

Due to injuries from linebackers Rashaan Evans (groin), Christian Miller (biceps), Terrell Lewis (elbow) and Anfernee Jennings (ankle), Alabama entered Saturday’s game looking to develop depth on defense. In doing so the Tide handed four players their first career start.

Sophomore defensive lineman Raekwon Davis, red shirt junior linebackers Keith Holcombe and Jamey Mosley and senior cornerback Levi Wallace all made their starting debuts. Davis finished tied with safety Ronnie Harrison with eight tackles on the afternoon. The defensive end also recorded a quarterback hurry. Holcombe finished with seven tackles and a pass breakup. Mosley had two tackles while Wallace had one.

Wallace was tended to on the field in the second quarter after he appeared to be poked in the eye. However, the senior later returned to the field shortly after.

Tua Time
Tagovailoa was expected to make his college debut against Fresno State, but few expected the former four-star to come in as early as he did. Tagovailoa entered the game on Alabama’s fourth offensive possession with 10:35 remaining in the half.

The Hawaii native proceeded to complete his first two passes for 9 yards and 6 yards respectively before taking a sack on his third career snap. Alabama was forced to punt two plays later after Tagovailoa was pressured in the pocket causing him to roll out to his left and throw awkwardly off his back foot for an incompletion on third-and-15.

Tagovailoa returned with 13:12 left in the fourth quarter to finish out the game. The freshman completed a 1-yard pass to Irv Smith but was mostly tasked with handing the ball off to fellow freshman Najee Harris. Later in the quarter, Alabama cornerback Anthony Averett returned an interception to the Fresno State 4-yard line. However, Tagovailoa and the Tide were unable to capitalize, settling for a field goal after a rush for no gain and two incompletions.

Tagovailoa finally got in the end zone later in the fourth quarter when he led Alabama on an eight-play, 75-yard drive ending in a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ruggs.

Tagovailoa finished the day 6 of 9 for 64 yards and a touchdown, while Najee Harris led all Alabama running backs with 70 yards on 13 carries.
