From the outside, Capital Hall looks like any other building on the University of Alabama campus. But on the inside, it’s home to the newly renovated Alabama Athletics Training Program.

The classrooms have desks that double as treatment tables, and students have access to the best equipment and technology available for a top-tier learning experience.

Classrooms, labs, and offices are now all located in the same building. Before the update, the program had classrooms and offices spread out across campus, making it tricky for students and their professors.

“Our students have very busy schedules because, in addition to classes, they are also doing 20 to 30 hours of clinical work per week,” said Program Director Lizzie Elder. “Being able to have them all consolidated here is beneficial for them.”

This is Elder’s first year being program director, and on top of being in a new facility, the program is undergoing some big changes.

Starting in fall 2022, a two-year master’s program will be available for all undergraduate athletic training students. Students in different majors can also minor in athletic training.

Gino Mongelli is a first-year student in the program. Being from New Jersey, he said he was drawn to the University of Alabama because of its sports fame.

Not only that, Mongelli said the program is one of the best because of the technology this new facility offers.

“We have some of the best equipment in the country, which makes it easier for us to learn and easier for us to treat the athletes and get them back out to playing,” said Mongelli.

Also from across the country in Utah, Miranda Slack said the family atmosphere attracted her to the University.

“All our professors, we all call them by their first names, and we all kind of treat everyone like a family,” said Slack. “I think that’s what I really enjoy about it most.”

Walking out the doors, two maps hang on the wall. Every pin on the map represents where each student is from, even internationally.

So whether students are from New Jersey, Utah, or sweet home Alabama, this athletic training program is a home for so many students to refine their skills and train with the pros.

“We’re just very thankful for the space and the opportunities this presents for the faculty and the students and look forward to continuing to grow our program,” said Elder.
