Great information. You always here that, yes, Football programs rake in the dough, but now you see what they really go to support.

That aside, I couldn't help but laugh at this...

Even more shocked about softball not making money. They sell out their season tickets every year with a 1,200 person waiting list for season tickets. They draw over 2,000 people per game, even the midweek games. I guess it cost more than I realized.

Gymnastics did surprise me at the amount of the red ink.

Maybe moving the WBB team to Foster Auditorium will lessen the red ink. Team improvement will help with this too.

I'm surprised at gymnastics losing money as well. I guess the lesson is that football and men's basketball get a lot of money from TV, the other sports not so much.

Other folks get a good chunk of that stuff... Centerplate, area booster clubs, and that cluck nut's firm out of B'ham who is heavily involved with the UA Gameday logistics (aka parking)... I forget his name.

I was just mulling what happens to the surplus. I know some of it would go towards scholarships- just for round numbers I guesstimated 250 scholarships at $20k each, so that would come out at 5m. Is the rest applied towards paying for the BDS addition, Coleman upgrade, etc. or was that already paid for?

Pat on the back to all the people who say college football players should not be paid.

EDIT: Well, take that back, b/c we're still operating at an overall profit in the Athletics Dept. but still, shows that not ever sport is just raking it in.

Those numbers really didn't surprise me. I had stated on an earlier thread that football is always the big money maker and all you had to do was go to a high school near you to find this out. I was surprised a bit about softball and even baseball and their numbers.

HOW does rowing make money? Where do they get revenu?

If Gymnastics and Softball don't make money now, they will never make money without a TV contract that is something in the same direction as Football.

When I think of some of the coaches that we have for non-money making program, that is to point out the high quality of these coachs, I have to say that I'm pleased that someone can find away around having the coaches effectively earn their own salary...that way Coach Saban has been able to do.

The only obvious revenue source for rowing would be donations.
