I like pictures like that. Thanks, Terry.

1. Petey is a midget
2. Smelley and and everyone else in that pic, minus Mike Williams and U. Billingsley, looks rather slow and robust.
3. WRs need a little bulk. Julio and Maze look pretty strong
4. Overall, team doesn't look like they just fininshed a difficult off-season conditioning program. Rather, they just finished a lengthy stay at the Pizza Hut lunch buffet!:no-no:

Take McCoy as example here. Still looks like he's in 11th grade. I have doubts he'll do what people hope this year—but that doesn't mean I'm not praying.

Smelley may look that way, slow and robust, but consider those catches he made for 12-15 yards last year weren't coming out of the TE spot, but a slot position.

It sure seems—by evidence—he was quick enough to get open.

Petey is 35+ yards away in that picture. Midget? He looks like a tree trunk to me from that angle.

The "slow and robust" line cracked me up when I look at Marrow. He's also to the right of Julio in the top pic. A freakin' truck.

True, Marrow and Ingram look like guys I'd pick if I was picking for teams. But you gotta admit that some of the others look like they've missed a few cardio sessions.

And the Petey - midget comment was just for fun. Didn't mean it as a negative comment... he'll probably light some RBs up during his stay at the Capstone!:fight:

Wow, looking back over those pics, Norwood will be a stallion!

Julio is an absolute specimen. I guess that is common knowledge, though.

Wonder what Chris Jordan looks like these days? He was a "prototype" coming out of high school.

I haven't seen Jordan. Not a lot of talk about him.

One thing that struck me is the difference between Williams and Dial. One, you see in a true line/blocking role. The other (Dial) you can see how he could fit in that TE/H-back role.

Here is another from over the weekend...

Trent, DJ, and Nico helping out with a youth football camp in Andalusia...

Fluker is unreal. You expect someone who weighs 360+ to be "flabbier" than that. It reinforces my belief that he will contribute from day one - much in the way that Andre did...though Fluker may not be as polished, his physical attributes are vastly superior to what Smith possessed as a true frosh...or junior first round draft pick for that matter.

Considering a few of the reports I've gotten over the last week or so I'm in more of a 50-50 kind of thought process on who takes that LT spot.

He's been more than holding his own in drills. What is very interesting to me about that is defensive ends are quicker without pads...and, when you add the pads to DE's it also gives the offensive lineman the ability to sustain more leverage as well.

I think the biggest factors are:

(1) Instinct/aggressiveness
(2) Ability to learn the playbook

We have had some monster linemen who were massive and incredibly strong, yet never contributed because they lacked the instinct and aggressiveness needed. The playbook will take time...can Fluker learn in in the summer? We don't yet know the answer, however if he is good enough, the coaches can simplify it for him - or he can lean on his teammates. The other will remain an unknown until pads are worn. We will hear reports from practice revealing a lot, but it may be Va. Tech before the truth is revealed.

Based upon what I have heard, Fluker has the aggressiveness and good instincts, so the playbook becomes the issue - but I don't see it being an issue.

My early prediction for our starting front is something like this:

Fluker - Johnson - Vlachos - Carpenter - Davis

There are several others who could work their way into the rotation.

Am I the only one who finds the absence of any member's from the 2006 top 5 ranked OL recruiting class just a bit interesting? The only one of that bunch who contributed on the OL went pro as a Junior (Smith). Drew Davis was an unranked 2 star signed in 2004. Mike Johnson was 2005. Other than one who started as a true freshman...

I don't see Johnson and Davis on the same side, and positioning them apart that would provide leadership and direction for the newcomers (shoring up a perceived weakness on the OL)...it would help make up for deficiencies in Fluker's knowledge of the playbook since Johnson knows the blocking assignments and can talk to DJ. According to scout, Johnson is the #3 ranked OG in the 2010 draft as of now, and Davis is the #24 ranked OT. Call me a homer, but I don't see our OL being in as much trouble as some do.

It is not as good at this point as last year's line was, but in adfdition to the five you mentioned, I anticipate that Love, Warmack, Boswell, Jones and Ross could all contribute. Last year we were in trouble past our 1st OL sub.

Joe I think you hit a good point.

I agree. From everything I have read and heard. Our first string is not as stout as last years, but we will not have a huge drop off when the 2's come in to replace the 1's.

I guess we will be more consistent.

Well, despite athleticism & scheme, I think the other issue to make it a trifecta is chemistry... The REAL way to envoke good O-line chemistry is game time experience, which favors Carpenter if he is tied up w/ Fluker on everything else.

The other elements we are leaving out is TE blocking. McCall was a beast, are we going to go down a notch when it comes to TE blocking?

The thing that really is surreal about all this is I cannot remember the last time we had this kinda problem, w/ this kinda of talent at the O-line.

One of those good kinda problems...

The biggest factor with "chemistry" is having a line that lacks a balance of experience to offset new players.

The top programs replace linemen every year. When we have done it of late, there has been no depth and multiple new starters + lack of playing experience in game situations. I don't see that being an issue this season. I am not going to say that Fluker will be as good as a first round draft pick on day one, but he has more upside. Carpenter is experienced and a fantastic athlete. Vlachos will be more than serviceable (keep in mind he is beating out Cardwell).

When Nebraska was mauling people in the 90's, you never heard anything about them having to replace OL. Ditto for Miami and OU. We are just gunshy because of our recent experiences. The process is taking care of our gaps.
