🏈 Tua: How the decision was made

Go to the 1:35 mark of the 3rd quarter. Bama has the ball, 3rd and 6 on the Lville 24.

Good play call, option right. Defender has to make the choice between Jalen and Najee. Hurts tries to fake but he doesn’t take it and Jalen still keeps the ball. Even though the defender doesn’t make the play, he strings it out and Jalen gets stuffed well short of the first down.

Pause it at 1:33 and see what Jalen sees. If he pitches the ball to Najee, it’s a first down and he may even score. But Jalen is a ball hog.

So the point is, Jalen is not even that strong on option runs. If he doesn’t excel in that area, what possible reason would there be to keep playing him? Passing is not even close to a contest. Tua wins by miles.

This is just absolutely ridiculous. Christ, Tua has won the job and we still have to stomach these garbage "I hate Jalen" posts.

Grow up, boy. First of all, I don’t hate Jalen. Secondly, if you don’t like it, don’t read it.

“Absolutely ridiculous”. Lololololol

Take your own advice. Dont like what I said, dont read it. And if you don't think judging Jalen freaking Hurts' ability as a running QB on a single play in a game he came cold off the bench is ridiculous then I dont think you know what the phrase "absolutely ridiculous" means.... boy.

Hahahahaha

You’re all pissed off! Seems to happen a lot from what I’ve seen here.

You lose btw, Bama Boy. Lol.

No... actually I'm not. What did I lose, though? Certainly not a battle of wits, I'd need to be facing someone with wit.

@ColAngus,
This is just absolutely ridiculous. Christ, Tua has won the job and we still have to stomach these garbage "I hate Jalen" posts.

If we're talking about the same play, I see what he's driving towards. The only question I have is what was Jalen seeing? I saw the safety coming up fast and he may have been able to make the play. (Although with Najee's talent/speed I tend to think he missed the read erring on the side of caution.)

I also see what I consider to be a fine line drawn between the decisions they want him to make. He's being instructed not to tuck and run as much but to go through progressions. The side effect from that decision is the limitations it puts on what he could do if he were to tuck and run.

He's being instructed not to tuck and run as much but to go through progressions.......#2 problem isn't what he hasn't been coached not to do or to do. His problem is his processor can't make it happen when the time arrives. It will not change no matter how many years he stays and it will follow him to his next school. His father already knows #2's shortcomings and they didn't start at the U of A.

That one play wasn't the issue with his comment that I had. My issue was him saying that one play is "proof" that not only is Jalen not a good passer but he's also a bad option QB, which is just flat out silly.

That play was merely an example. Accept it, and others, or not but I never intended to be laying out an entire case.

I have the highest respect for Jalen Hurts and I wish him nothing but the best. I hope he has a continued on the field role for this team, just not at quarterback. I would wager the vast majority of Alabama fans feel the same way.

To your last point:

He received a standing ovation from fans in the stadium when he entered for his first series Saturday. (This, according to Eli on the radio)

I want this offense to have Tua's identity and he should free to exercise his leadership and swag. Saban said he didn't want either QB to be looking over their shoulder. Failing to appoint Tua the starter does nothing to empower our new QB in all the areas I just mentioned. Is that really fair to Tua at this stage? Saban has given Jalen as the starter the last 2 years something that verbally he wouldn't give Tua and that goes far beyond this cat and mouse game with the press. It's Saban's job to empower these kids and their position on the field. So for me, it's very unfair to Tua and the offense as @Tidestalker has also said numerous times.

Let me preface this by saying: I trust Nick Saban essentially implicitly, he's led us here with some of the best decisions I've ever seen.

Nick, it's time to sit Jalen down and talk about where he can transfer when the season ends. You need to prepare for life without Jalen in the room, the kid is just a weakness when he enters the field. It's obvious to most everyone watching the games and even practices that Tua is just beyond Jalen in reading defenses, analyzing the play, and making solid decisions in the pocket. I know, Jalen carried you there and he has done everything you've asked of him and he's been probably one of the best young men you've ever coached, but, sometimes these things just don't work out. You don't do Jalen any good continuing to string him through all this without really a chance to beat out Tua. Please, find it within yourself to let Jalen and his family know that you're deeply sorry and regret that it didn't work out for the QB, but it's time for Alabama to rally around Tua and what he can do..thanks Nick.

Crap like this is so dumb. I'm sorry but its just dumb. Did you not watch the first drive? Do you see how quickly something like that can happen? (Tua getting hurt) But you just think it's time to sit a former SEC Offensive Player of the Year down and say "hey, go transfer somewhere." Sure that makes a ton of freaking sense.

Yep I agree.

In Saban's defense, this is week 2. Now from media reports and general common sense, I would absolutely expect that Tua has looked better in practice also.... Meaning Saban has been watching this unfold for over a month (plus the title game and lead up). At most maybe 1 more week of the charade that there's a competition in order to let Tua settle into being the leader. And probably more importantly - Let Jalen settle into being the backup role. Ultimately is this something he will embrace or run from? If it's something he is sour on, then cut bait and start prepping Mac (I think Jalen would adjust appropriately).

I honestly think seeing Mac in mopup is telling.

Saban RARELY goes 3-deep at QB, even in blowouts. Unless it's like a walk-on at homecoming that Saban just wants to get some playing time. When's the last time we had a walk-on anyway? It's been years.

Point is, Saban historically (virtually) NEVER goes 3-deep in the QB rotation (save for USC 2 years ago, but that's only because the 1st 2 QBs weren't getting it done in the competition). But again, we're talking mopup duty here.

I don't think Jalen will even be QB2, so let's stop hoping he STAYS for a backup role. Ideally, yes. If he's the CONSUMMATE team player and vows to stay, then yes. But Saban knows he's not going to stay and play 2nd fiddle after being supplanted. Saban respects Jalen too much to squander a year of eligibility for him when he knows he's probably transferring this December.

Hide and watch. We'll see less and less of Jalen thru the next 2-3 weeks, and Mac Jones will be QB2. Because this can still count as a RS year for Jalen, up to 4 games (with the new rule passed this summer). So he'll still have 2 years of eligibility when he transfers, instead of 1.

What will be, will be. Jalen has said all the right things and his body language has been supportive. And coach Saban couldn't create a distraction in my life if he was watching the game in my man cave, so I'm good. But it doesn't need to rock and roll much longer with the team.

That's what my wife said to me when Mac came in, must be obvious, Saban has us all genuflecting over all the possibilities at this point. I pretty much agree with the time frame. We will have our answers after our trip to Oxford.

I'm not sure that's a good barometer, but you're right, he doesn't do it that often...but who does? (I'm too lazy to look it up) This year is a bit different, but I can understand the reason for us going with Jones and letting Jalen maintain his redshirt based on the changes this year.

Why give meaningful reps to a 3rd when you rarely give reps to the 2nd...perhaps this year will be different. Senior day/last game maybe, trying to determine who the #2 QB, etc.
