Former Alabama RB Trent Richardson suspended by CFL team

Former Tide running back Trent Richardson has been placed on the suspended list by his Canadian Football League team, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

The Roughriders announced the move on Saturday as training camps opened across the CFL. The release did not give a reason for his suspension, nor did it indicate when he would be allowed to return.

Richardson signed with the team last September after bouncing out of the NFL. Once a top 3 selection in the 2012 NFL Draft, Richardson never rushed for more than 1,000 yards in a season or for more than 3.6 yards per attempt.

In four games with the Roughriders last season, Richardson amassed 259 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns on 48 carries. It was his first professional action since 2014 after spending 2015 and 2016 on practice squads with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens.

Last week, Roughriders coach and GM Chris Jones commented on Richardson’s likely absence from training camp.

“Right now, Trent has got some situations going on at home so we’ll just have to see where that goes,” Jones said on a conference call.

It’s difficult to see a path back to the NFL for Richardson, especially after this latest incident. But that didn’t stop Alabama coach Nick Saban from advocating for him back in February.

“I don’t think there is any question about it,” Saban said. “If Trent does the things he needs to do, can stay in shape and keep his weight down … I don’t think there is any question about it. When you have a bump in the road, the best thing to do is put some evidence on tape that people can look at and show that you are serious about trying to make a comeback. I think some team will get a real bargain if they give him an opportunity.”

One of these days someone will tell the tale about Trent and we will hopefully get some real answers about what changed so dramatically after he left Alabama. I don't think it was his field vision as much as something else between the ears. Watching some of his videos at Bama he saw plenty of gaps and was instinctively cutting inside and out. Lots of things can change with people but the mind is as fragile as it can get at times. Not much you can do about it when you stop believing in yourself and that confidence is just gone. It's a shame you can't get that back in the weight room.
