TUSCALOOSA, Alabama -- Quarterback Connor Brewer, who recently announced that he was transferring out of Texas, said he's heard from Alabama and a number of other major programs, according to a report Tuesday from the Arizona Republic.

Brewer, a Paradise Valley, Ariz., native, spent one season with the Longhorns and never saw the field. He was among three quarterbacks in line to back up junior David Ash in 2013.

Along with Alabama, Brewer said he's heard from Notre Dame, Tennessee, Stanford and Duke.

ā€œIt was a hard decision but it was the right thing to do,ā€ Brewer told The Republic. "I’ve had a lot of success. I think I still have a chance at that. I felt I’d have a better opportunity at another place. I want to go to a place where I can play sooner."

Alabama will need a replacement for AJ McCarron in 2014, but there appears to be plenty of candidates on the current roster. The Crimson Tide, which recently landed a commitment from five-star quarterback David Cornwell, is currently positioned to have five scholarship quarterbacks -- Alec Morris, Cooper Bateman, Parker McLeod, Blake Sims and Cornwell -- on its 2014 roster. Preferred walk-on Luke Del Rio, who passed on scholarship offers at a handful of Pac-12 programs, makes it six.

During his recruitment out of high school, Brewer, whom 247Sports ranked as the No. 5 pro-style quarterback in the class of 2012, was in Tuscaloosa for the 2010 Iron Bowl and left with a Crimson Tide offer. He committed to Texas a few months later.
If Brewer lands with a Division I program, he will be forced to sit out a season, per NCAA transfer rules.

I just don't see this happening...not even sure why Gribble posted this.

Of interest to me is this makes what, the third highly touted QB that's transferred from TX in the last two/three years?

How to put this...

It seems Mack is still looking for that special QB to win his games instead of concentrating on QB's that won't lose them.

Believe Brewer was a Harsin recruit, who back-filled the vacancy Malzahn left at Arkansas State...so in a way, he's without the coach who recruited him and without the same offensive game plan.

Since Colt/Vince days, they've went Dual Threat > Pro Style > Dual Threat.

I think the past few seasons/pressure has forced Mack to try anything instead of sticking to his "process". But heck, hiring the Bama recruiting coordinator is gonna help them out big time. I mean, last I checked, Texas' problem was never the talent...it was developing it.

It's odd to me that Mack and the rest of the coaches in Texas haven't figured out that it isn't a talent problem there it's a developing the talent problem. Like Plano said.

I honestly think the Mack Brown days are starting to come to and end and if he doesn't figure out the problem going on there his days are going to be really numbered.

I believe as much emphasis needs to be placed on evaluation. Mack does the majority of his recruiting from behind his desk. That's a trend that started with the Vince Young team that won against USC.

When you combine that with this stat—just under 45% of the top 100 ranked players from the years 2006-2009 were considered "busts" ***—developing talent really becomes an issue.

Coaches shot themselves in their foot when they passed the legislation that head coaches shouldn't be allowed to be on the road in the spring.

I've always been of the opinion one game made Mack Brown—his win at North Carolina against Florida State. Now, I'm not taking a thing away from the team he fielded that went on to win the BCSNC. But, I believe we can all agree it's very similar to the 2010 Auburn team. It was a team that had a "freak of nature" at the QB position and tilted the field to a large degree.

Another way to look at TX is through the Oklahoma prism, if you will.

People point to the lack of success OU has had in the national stage when they play against the upper teams in the BCS divisions. It's important to recall OU was there because they had beaten TX. Often, by a very large margin.

***

Busts defined:

Played in less than 40 games in their collegiate career and/or started in less than 20.

Using Rivals rankings from the 2006-09 period:

The 165 busts form Rivals.com’s top 100 lists from 2006-09 — a pool of 390 players who had extinguished college eligibility — failed for different reasons:
73 transferred to another school;
47 were career backups;
23 suffered significant injuries;
22 were dismissed from their team.

What percentage do we have at UA? I don't know. But, I suspect it's a little under the nation average but not by much.

I'm calling BS on this one... If he HAS heard from Alabama, it was to tell him to that we DON'T need him here, that we have more QB's than we do bench space and maybe that he needs to try and make the squad at Auburn and run Short Bus Gus' smoke and mirror offense...

We've told recruits we're looking at taking two in this class.

I don't doubt there's been communication. An offer? Yes, I seriously doubt that.

But, giving him the opportunity to be a "preferred walk-on?" That wouldn't shock me in the least.

"More QB's than bench space..."

All personal opinion here in that I have no issues with having five on scholarship. Technically, we have six on the team if you include Del Rio as a walk-on.

That said, between Morris, Bateman, and McLeod I believe we'll see one, if not two, move in by spring 2015. Maybe sooner...

Evaluation...damn I missed that crucial portion of Mack's design - RGIII/Manziel at secondary comes to mind :)

Its kinda funny watching the Texas fans whine, it usually comes from those in maroon vs those in burnt orange.

Did he seriously recruit Manziel & RGIII at DB?

As I recall, TX didn't officially offer Manziel but did recruit him to play in the secondary—Brown thought he'd make a good safety. Muschamp confirmed that story.

RGIII said they recruited him as an athlete. There's reason to believe he wanted him to play receiver. The "DB" thing with Griffin is just a running joke.

There is no denying the fact Brown didn't recruit either of the past two Heisman winners at the position they won the award playing.

The change in offense this year is mind boggling. No team in the country returns more starters than does Texas. They are one of five that returns 19. Why try to teach old dogs new tricks?
