The Alabama track and field teams will send 16 men and 14 women, along with four relay teams to Jacksonville, Fla., for the NCAA East Region Preliminary today-Saturday

The East Region Preliminary features the top 48 qualifiers for each event in both the men’s and women’s competition. The top-12 finishers in each event will join the top 12 performers from the West Region to advance to the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships June 11-14 in Eugene, Ore.

The Crimson Tide will enter the prelims with nine top-12 seeds on the men’s side and four on the women’s side. Senior Yanique Malcolm enters as the top seed in the women’s 800 meters thanks to her SEC-winning time of 2:03.28. Senior Diondre Batson (men’s 100 meters), junior Remona Burchell (women’s 100) and sophomore Elias Hakansson (men’s hammer) are No. 2 seeds in their events.

The men’s 4Ɨ100-meter relay team of Batson, seniors Akeem Haynes and Alex Sanders and sophomore Dwight Davis will enter as the No. 3 seed. All four members of the relay team also will compete individually. Batson, Haynes and Sanders will run the 100m and Davis will compete in the 400 meters.

Freshman Alex Gholston of Town Creek will compete in the women’s 400 and be part of the 4Ɨ400 relay.
