šŸˆ Tostitos and Discover part ways with Fiesta and Orange bowls

After an 18-year association with the Fiesta Bowl, the Sports Business Journal is reporting that Tostitos (and parent company Frito Lay) has ā€œrecently advisedā€ ESPN that it will end its title sponsorship with the bowl game. ESPN is will seek out a new Fiesta Bowl sponsor for the College Football Playoff.

The SBJ is reporting that ā€œindustry sourcesā€ are not entirely sure what caused Tostitos to part ways with the bowl game, but ā€œthe price increase on the title sponsorship could have played a role.ā€

In addition to Tostitos, SBJ is also reporting that Discover has ended its sponsorship with the Orange Bowl after a four-year association and Capitol One ā€œis in the final stages of negotiationsā€ to take Discover’s place. As a result of that new agreement, Capitol One would end its sponsorship with the Capitol One Bowl. That game, formerly known as the Citrus Bowl, will have to find a new title sponsor as well.

Good! I know they won't go long without a sponsor whose lame commercials will constantly interrupt play during the game, but for a while, we can at least have that 70s feel when the Orange Bowl was just the Orange Bowl, etc.

We talked a little about this when the subject of the Peach Bowl came up.

I realize it's a cash bonanza for ESPN and the bowl games. But, I sure wish they'd just be happy with the extra revenue and not allow sponsors for the playoff bowl games.

Hell, I'd likely not mind "The NCAA presents..." Let them pay the 25 million per.

And it's not only that, but also when the talking heads are babbling about the game...How many times do you hear them mention the sponsor in their comments? For starters, "We'll be back to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl right after..." Enough! Just call it what it is.
