I have been a NASCAR fan for quite a while. I started out as a Dale Earnhardt fan. I can not explain how much that he meant to NASCAR or his fans. When he was killed at Daytona, it had a deep affect on me and it was hard for me to watch NASCAR for some time. I tried, but I could not adopt Jr. as my driver as easily as some did. So I pretty much just watched NASCAR as a casual observer.

Then in 2005 I decided that I should give a go of it again. I decided to find myself a new driver. It was not a easy task because I felt like if I picked a driver, that I had to find one that would truly be my own. By picking a already established driver, I felt like I was jumping on the bandwagon. So I decided to go for a rookie. I could have picked Kyle Busch, Scott Riggs or Travis Kvapil. I chose Kvapil to be my driver. He was driver of the #77 Penske Dodge. He had a message board and I joined and became friends with many of his fans that had been pulling for him since he started driving Craftsman Trucks. He was Craftsman truck champion in 2001 and 2003. Things did not go well, however, and when 2005 ended so did the #77 team.

So in 2006, Travis gets a new car. The Tide car as a matter of fact. It almost seemed too good to be true to be rooting for Tide in NASCAR too! Only draw back was that the car was Orange and Blue. Anyway the Tide team was a one car team and very poorly funded. 2006 was a season of disappointment and in the end the Tide team folded.

Once again without a ride, Travis returns to Trucks in 2007, this time driving for Jack Rousch. He won several races that year and gave me a lot to cheer about. However, I was also left without a driver in Nextel Cup.

So this is where Kurt Busch comes in. As luck would have it, I got tickets to go the the spring race in Talladega. I went wearing a Bama shirt with no team to root for. I watched a good race and got to see the fans once again pelt Jeff Gordon with beer cans. But heres the neat part. Before the race started I walked around where the souvineer trailors are set up. Sometimes, before the race, drivers and their pit crews will come to there trailor to sign autographs. Now, I saw David Gilliland, I saw Sterling Marlin, I saw Reed Sorenson, Kevin Harvick's pit crew (no Harvick). I saw several of the less famous drivers but no Tony Stewart, no Earnhardt Jr., no Carl Edwards, no Matt Kenseth. No driver of that caliber was there. No driver except one, Kurt Busch. See, I like many of you had a bad impression of him. But the fact that he was out there, well it kind of changed my opinion of him. I went home and started doing a little research on the internet, and I found a message board of his. Come to find out, he is at that trailer for every race. Meeting his fans every race. I found out that he was a hot head, but it was a lot to do with the fact that he was a champion. A champion that expected to win and expected the best out of those around him. Yea, he came of as harsh sometimes, yea he said some things to the media that he wishes he could have back (sounds like a coach I know and love.)

So my point is, yall don't be so fast to judge Kurt and don't judge him by his brother. I welcome him as a Bama fan and I hope to see him at a game some day. Roll Tide Kurt and Go #2!
