In South Alabama these days the forest is 80+% pine trees

The guy that own the field across from me planting pine trees about 5-6 years ago. For some reason he had some cut down about two years ago.
But pine tress grow at a very high rate.

Yeah most are genetically modified and grow super fast. The “new” breed grows 3x’s the rate of a regular pine tree.

And aren't worth a damn for lumber. The lumber mills have at least started planting long leafs in some areas again.

In the Bankhead the Forest Service crews are replanting long leaf pines as well.

About half where we live or 16 of 35 acres. The land my wife inherited in the forest is almost all hardwood with maybe 3 to 4 acres of the 55 acres Virginia or loblolly pine.

My dad asked me what I wanted him to do the last time he cut his land. Told him it was his he should do what he wanted. He said he was leaving it to me and would never cut it again in his lifetime so I asked him to leave every oak and he did. Only hardwoods for miles
