šŸ€ Tide basketball hires AAU veteran for Assistant coaching position

Scott Pospichal, who has over 30 years of coaching experience at the AAU, junior college and high school levels, has been named assistant coach of the men's basketball program, Alabama head coach Avery Johnson announced on Thursday.

"Scott is a legendary AAU coach and we are very excited for him to join our program at the University of Alabama," Johnson said. "During his time with the Texas Titans, he has helped develop numerous players who have went on to do great things at the college and professional levels. He is an excellent coach who specializes in the offensive part of the game and is a great communicator.

"We went through an extensive, vigorous hiring process to bring in the person who we felt would best help us in every aspect of our program, focusing on the areas of recruiting, coaching and player development," Johnson said. "There is no doubt in my mind that Scott fits this mold perfectly and will be a tremendous asset to our program."

Pospichal (pronounced POSS-pickle) comes to the Capstone after spending the previous 10 years building the Texas Titans into one of the AAU's elite basketball programs in the nation. During his time with the Titans, Pospichal has coached over 25 different players who has signed Division I scholarships, including the likes of Julius Randle (Kentucky), Matthew Jones (Duke), Prince Ebeh (Texas), Damion Jones (Vanderbilt) and Avery Johnson Jr., among many others.

Pospichal led the Titans to seven AAU national championship games in his 10 years at the helm of the program, claiming four national titles and three runner-up finishes. Furthermore, his teams were a member of the NIKE Elite Youth Basketball League (EYBL) for four years and claimed the U-16 Nike National Peach Jam Championship in 2012, which is considered the top AAU event in the nation.

"I feel like I've received the golden ticket for this opportunity to be the assistant basketball coach at the University of Alabama," Pospichal said. "Coach Johnson and I have had a relationship dating back for a few years now. I have always believed in him so much. This is a tremendous opportunity to work with him and work at an iconic university and terrific program like Alabama. I am absolutely thrilled out of my mind to get there and get started."

Pospichal collegiate coaching experience came when he was the head coach at Palm Beach Community College in Lake Worth, Fla., for nine seasons from 1987-95. During his time there, Pospichal became the winningest coach in program history with a record of 181-72 (.715). He led his teams to three conference championships and was named the conference coach of the year three separate times. During his nine years at Palm Beach CC, Pospichal placed 48 of 50 student-athletes in four-year schools.

Prior to his time at Palm Beach, Pospichal was an assistant coach at UNC Charlotte from 1983-85 under head coach Dr. Hal Wissel.

From 1994-2004, Pospichal stepped outside the coaching box and into the world of business where he worked for Excel Communications, which is a multi-billion dollar company. He served on many different levels at the corporation including presidential director, ambassador, executive senior director and many others on his way to become the company's 13th-best all-time income earner.

Pospichal played his collegiate basketball at Florida Southern College from 1981-83 where he helped the Mocs to the 1981 NCAA Division II national championship, while also reaching the national championship game in 1982. Additionally, Florida Southern claimed two NJCAA South Region titles (1981, 1982), two conference tournament championships (1981, 1983) and three regular season conference titles (1981, 1982, 1983) during his playing career. He still ranks second in program history in career free throw percentage (.868), while his 207 assists during the 1983 campaign is the second-highest single-season assist total in program history.

Pospichal is married to his wife Janet for 30 years and the couple has four children: son; Jason (23), and triplet daughters; Brooke, Grace and Molly (18). Jason recently graduated from Warner University in Lake Wales, Fla., with a bachelor's degree in sports management, while all three daughter will be attending college as freshman beginning in the fall of 2015. Brooke has signed a scholarship and will be a diver at the University of Texas (Austin), Grace signed a basketball scholarship at Oklahoma Wesleyan University in Bartlesville, Okla., while Molly will be a freshman attending the University of North Texas.

In an effort to help aid in Alabama’s rejuvenated recruiting effort, head basketball coach Avery Johnson is turning to someone that knows the AAU circuit.

Johnson hired Texas AAU coach Scott Pospichal as an assistant basketball coach to complete the first-year Tide coach’s three-person bench staff, the school announced Thursday afternoon.

ā€œWe went through an extensive, vigorous hiring process to bring in the person who we felt would best help us in every aspect of our program, focusing on the areas of recruiting, coaching and player development,ā€ Johnson said in a statement. ā€œThere is no doubt in my mind that Scott fits this mold perfectly and will be a tremendous asset to our program.ā€

Pospichal, who has known Johnson for several years during their time in Texas, was exuberant Thursday.

ā€œI’m 54, but I feel like I’m 25 today,ā€ Pospichal said laughing.

ā€œI was just hoping and praying that he’d call me up and say, ā€˜Hey, you want to go to Alabama?’ And it just worked out that it happened.ā€

Pospichal previously spent the last decade as head coach of the Texas Titans, an elite AAU program based in Dallas, and has coached a number of premier prospects, including former Kentucky star Julius Randle and Avery Johnson’s son, Avery Johnson Jr.

ā€œScott is a legendary AAU coach and we are very excited for him to join our program at the University of Alabama,ā€ Johnson said. ā€œDuring his time with the Texas Titans, he has helped develop numerous players who have went on to do great things at the college and professional levels. He is an excellent coach who specializes in the offensive part of the game and is a great communicator.ā€

Pospichal will join fellow Tide assistants Antoine Pettway and associate head coach Bob Simon, who joined the staff last month from Providence.

Given his more than three decades at both the junior college and AAU levels, Pospichal believes his addition to Alabama’s staff will provide a major boost on multiple fronts, especially given his ability to connect with elite prep prospects from all over the country.

ā€œI’m 54 years old so I’ve lived a little bit longer, I’ve worked for and coached some very elite players, (and) I think I know how to deal with those kids,ā€ Pospichal said. ā€œI think I have a credibility with those kids, and I think that will help our staff in recruiting as well.ā€

Pospichal’s hiring could pay immediate dividends with some of his now-former AAU players, including 6-foot-10 DeSoto center Marques Bolden, a five-star recruit in the 2016 class who is being recruiting by Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and others.

Avery Johnson Jr., a transfer from Texas A&M who played with the Titans the past several years, is visiting Alabama’s campus this week with the expectation he’ll join his father’s team at some point soon.

Pospichal has collegiate coaching experience, having served as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte in the mid-1980s and was head coach at both Polk Community College (1986-87) and Palm Beach Community College (1987-1995), according to his profile on the Texas Titans team website.

Winningest coach
During his nine seasons at Palm Beach, Pospichal became the winningest coach in program history with a record of 181-72 and led his teams to three conference titles.

More recently, Pospichal led the Texas Titans to seven national championship games in his 10 years as the organization’s head coach, claiming four national titles. In addition, Pospichal’s Titans won the 2012 under-16 Nike National Peach Jam Championship, considered one of the top AAU events in the nation.

Now, though, as the veteran coach makes the transition to big-time Division I basketball, he’s doing so with the motivation to continue that success in Tuscaloosa.

ā€œMy job is to make Avery Johnson the most successful basketball coach in the history of the University of Alabama, that’s what my job is,ā€ Pospichal said. ā€œAnd I don’t think there’s another job more important.

ā€œWe’re going to do everything we can as a staff, and I’m going to do everything that I can to help Avery Johnson — I owe him that.ā€
