The Rock Behind Olympic Curling

There is something most casual viewers never realize about Olympic curling. At the highest level, every stone used in competition comes from the same small, uninhabited island off the coast of Scotland.

Not just similar rock. The exact same source.

Each curling stone begins as granite taken from Ailsa Craig, an ancient volcanic formation. The granite found there is exceptionally dense and highly resistant to water absorption. This is crucial because curling stones experience repeated heavy impacts and constant exposure to melting and refreezing ice. If water penetrates the stone and later freezes, it can create microscopic fractures that alter performance. At elite levels, even the smallest variation can influence the outcome.

Manufacturers use two specific types of granite from the island. A tougher variety forms the main body of the stone to withstand collisions. A rarer, finer grained granite known as Blue Hone is used for the narrow running band that makes contact with the ice. That surface determines how the stone moves and curls. Any variation in material would affect how the sport is played.

The island itself is rarely mentioned during broadcasts, yet it remains a constant presence in every Olympic match. Every precise shot and every narrow miss begins with stone shaped from the same remote source.

I am really enjoying watching the curling on TV. There is a lot of strategy and skill involved. Last night, I saw a friend and his family at a curling center in Wisconsin on vacation. They rented one of the lanes (don't know the proper word) and tapped them curling. The sport is much more difficult in terms of footwork than it looks.

The ONLY reason I am watching some of the winter Olympics is bc some of the sports I find interesting are only on during the winter Olympics. Figure skating can be seen quite a bit on TV.

When we started the alumni group here the Sect Treasurer hung out at a hole in the wall in a part of town only described as boondocks. "The Thirsty Turtle." He introduced me to playing shuffleboard. (The table game.) I enjoy the game but it's hard to find due to its size.

I don't think I watched curling until playing shuffleboard. And, like you, I enjoy watching the competition.

Now, on that note, I haven't watched any of this years team. I haven't watched any of the Winter Olympics. In fact, I was hesitant to even start this thread because I was curious if we would make it through the entire event without a mention here on the forums.

Around the 'net I've seen very little attention paid to this years' games. The only thing I've seen more than once is the boxer we said had a dick, has a dick. And he beat the shit out of...

I digress.

Ditto.

I had a thread started on it late last week but canned it... figured it wasn't worth the squeeze. Personally, I enjoy the Olympics. It's the only time I really care about hockey, so I watch it. Curling is great to have on in the background. Short track speed skating is great... like watching a race at Bristol, but with the speeds and dangers of the final laps at Talladega. Skeleton runs are fun... respect to anyone going head first at 90 MPH down a tube of ice. See also: any of the downhill skiing. Some of the snowboarding stuff is neat... the freestyle and snowboard cross specifically.

When the Summer Games comes to LA in 2028, interest will spike again... and then when with Winter Games come back to Utah in 2034, those will get a lot of attention just like last time they were there.

Personally, I enjoy the Olympics.
I live quite a few of the Olympic events. I don't really care for the pomp and circumstance of "The Olympics" nor the social spectacle its become.

Timing, with viewing, just isn't right. When the events are on during primetime, with the exception of a night like last night, I'm more likely to keep an eye on a basketball game. In the afternoon? That's interrupting my "social life."

Curious. How long is the drive from your place to the hockey arena? I'm a little surprised you don't watch the B-ham 'pro' team. I'm assuming you take in a Bama hockey game or two each season?

About an hour and some change. It's been a few years since I've been to a Bama Hockey game, we used to go to at least 1 per season... would usually meet Doemasters there. If it was closer, I'd go to more... if Northport had any damn sense, they'd have built a multi use ice facility instead of this boondoggle waterpark that has less than 5% community support. An ice arena would have been cheaper, been year round usable, and had a ton more support... not to mention given UA hockey a new home much closer to campus.

Anyway... on the pro teams, I saw enough of them many years ago.. the B'ham Bulls... the dad of one of my best friend's was the team attorney and he used to take us to some games. When I moved to Mobile, I'd go see the Mystics on occasion. It was all ok, but not all that exciting. I want to see an actual NHL game... will probably go see the Predators one day when I have some time just to do it.

We hit a handful of Preds games each season. They are always a good time, win or lose. The games are a lot more engaging with the crowd than NBA games, at least in our opinion (the music, the contests, all that non-game stuff). Haven’t seen coach there yet, he surely stows away in one of the owner boxes away from spying eyes, for the few he probably attends.

Herb Winches, Channel 6 Bham, when the Bulls first came to Bham, "some say that hockey will prove to be more exciting than football, that's Bull hockey".

The SC Stingrays games are somewhat like what @Rolltide24 posted about the Preds: it's a good time. (Now, it doesn't hold a candle up to what Bill Murray ["Director of Fun"] and Mike Veeck do with the Riverdogs. Baseball...hockey...two different crowds.) Having grown up around UAH Hockey I appreciate how educated the folks around here are on the sport and rules of hockey.

About 10 years ago the convention center decided it was going to go nuts with parking fees. Recently it cost more to park than the face value of the playoffs tickets (and I was in the lower bowl a few rows up from the penalty boxes.) Now, like you, I don't go as often as I used to go. But, it's because I don't want to pay that much for the parking! šŸ¤·ā€ā™‚ļø

We spent a few months in Utah and went to quite a few hockey games, at least one a week, while there. We really enjoyed watching the Ogden Mustangs. From what I understood it was high school kids who were trying to go pro or at least get a scholarship playing on the team and they lived with people in the local area and played other teams in the region. It was fairly cheap and you could get tickets on the glass most of the time if you bought a week before the game. I've been to a couple of predators games and I'd take a Mustangs game any day. Beer was cheap, restrooms convenient, and seats were all good. It was a multi use ice rink like you mentioned. My kids wanna go back just to see another game. Good times.
