šŸ“ The Portal Watch 2020-2021: Florida's Emory Jones announces intent to enter the transfer portal

This portal thing is starting to make me want to puke!!!! Somebody needs to read these guys the definition of commitment and sticking things out even when things change. I know people will bring up coaches leaving but so what.... I was taught my actions and values are not conditional on someone elses behaviors. Probably will not be a popular stance.

The point is more the players are getting crap for doing exactly what coaches do without complaint. Why should 17-22 year olds have to live with a decision and promise that a 40-70 year old person doesn't have to live with? I do believe that they should still have to sit a year except if their coaches have left or they have graduated and this is their first transfer. Doubt we can put that genie back though.

These 2 sentences don't exactly "flow together".

As in life, very little is black & white. Usually some grey in between
My point is I made a commitment and that should mean something regardless of what a coach or someone else does. When someone else does not live up to that commitment that should not make it ok for me to do the same thing. Yeah I know life is not that black and white and I end up eating my words a lot especially with a teenager soon to be 20 year old. I know this is old timer talk...

Same thing with people changing jobs every 6 months... same thing as students transfer to another school for better opportunites in sports or education. same thing as me changing the houses even through I'm commited to paying 30 years mortgage... What's the difference?

Let them be great.

Easy fix:
Change the transfer period to where people can announce to transfer from Jan 15th to Feb 15th.. and June1st to July 31. Two window period.

Except you're contractually obligated to that 30 year mortgage. You can't survive financially without a job either. Makes about zero sense here, because in your examples you need another willing party to get you out of your current one. These guys leave themselves with an unknown variant, all while leaving their current school in limbo.

A guy like Caleb Williams for instance. "Hey, I don't want to play here or be a Sooner, but I may if I don't get or find what I want." How can a team plan and work, and even function like this? In work society we are seeing it daily where businesses can't function or make it due to flaky and non-dedicated workers.

Getting a little far afield here, but the virtual work environment has some working two jobs instead of quitting one and moving on. They limp along with both jobs, sucking but not bad enough to get fired.

The difference is the coaches and you are playing by the terms of the contract they sign. Both have ā€œoutsā€ and a procedure to terminate the contract.

For years the kids were bound by the terms of the NLI. Now those terms have changed and they have other options. I may not like the results of the current rules, but everyone is playing within those rules.

First, let’s admit that you’re making up a quote that he didn’t say. Could it be that he wants to play at a school that showcases his offensive skills? Venables is a defensive coach. Riley was offensive. IMO the kid is shopping to see if there is another option. They can’t do this every year and it’s better to do it early in their college career.

I can see your complaint if it's that the kids shouldn't be entering the portal before the bowl game, or before the season ends. But a 4 year "contract" isn't applicable. The student athletes aren't beholden to that school for the length of their career as we would be in a mortgage. The actual financial agreement/paperwork is signed by the student athlete on a yearly basis.

And I agree with your general stance on how society is much more "flaky". In the same sense though - what is the answer? I believe in competition and free markets... Maybe you do too? So in that sense, it's up to business and the market to offer workers something to make them less flaky if they want to stay competitive... Complaining about it isn't the answer, finding ways to get the best people and competing is. Which is basically what's going on in CF, and why CNS has become so dominant... He's always evolving and extremely competitive.

First off, it's exactly what his words are insinuating. The quotations weren't meant as a direct quote from him, it was meant as what he is currently pursuing. Why would he be opened up to coming back if what you're saying has any truth in it? He can easily find another opportunity to showcase his skill set, so why leave it open? Because he's shopping himself. This is all a testament to the downfall of the transfer portal and how it is ruining college football, not indicative of what it means to him personally. How can football programs continue to deal with this and be successful? It's not making college football a broader opportunity, it's making it a mess that it may never get out of, while also messing up many player's futures. How many less scholarships are going out to high school players because of the transfer portal and this extra year of eligibility? Someone posted here how that was working out and hurting the future.
