| FTBL The NFL has asked teams to eliminate the Oklahoma Drill over concussion concerns.

Slippery Slope they're on here..... I get it, but when there's no more football there will be no more football millionaires. Where will that line end up?! Time will tell

There is already a limit on "full contact" at the HS level that is monitored and reported by each school to the state. 2 hand tag will be the new rule soon!!

How often have you seen those Oklahoma drill standouts have a lot of success on the field? In my experience it's not a guarantee or something seen consistently.

In my view, with the limitations on practice times, it's a waste of time. (If Bama did these drills I'd say stop and use the time for live kicking.)

(I'll never forget seeing fRan use those drills when he was trying to "warm up" to the fans. It was hollow...so orchestrated and meant nothing. DuBose included there ... Shonta Ray was a hell of a warrior in Oklahoma drills but good lord he certainly lacked the acumen for football.)

We primarily used the drill in the Spring to "try and find" who our Alpha dogs were going to be. We NEVER used it in the fall. Now that I'm out of it, I don't even think they spend 5 minutes on it in the Spring.

I'm trying to remember if the team is on 12 minute periods in the fall or if it's 10 minutes. I'm sure it would be possible, but it sure seems difficult to get anything out of a drill like this in fall camp.

This I know. My opinion of the drill, especially at Bama, is certainly skewed by what I witnessed with other coaches. It's not a fair comparison, I know. But, it's a comparison I can't shake.

@TerryP I should've said that when I say we, I meant as my time as a coach and not during my time on campus at UA. I don't recall seeing the drill run at BAMA under Curry or Stallings. Now, that isn't to say the OL/DL didn't do something similar but no RBs or LBs were involved.

I agree with this. This was a motivating tactic to get guys pumped up for Spring and Summer practice, never in the Fall. Goal line was our Fall practice slobber knocking. Just like weight lifting, extremely heavy lifting Spring and Summer and just maintenance and endurance training in the Fall. It was also a way to try and pull out that inner desire that coaches knew certain kids had that needed help bringing it out.

In my experience (which is only Jr High and High School) it was used much more at the lower levels in frequency to try and bring out aggressiveness in us. I will also say this, the Okla drill with an RB was responsible for me taking a starting position on defense during spring training for 9th grade ball.

Any man that plays "One Moment in Time" by Whitney Houston to motivate his team against Auburn in Auburn (for the first time ever).........probably not going to find out who the alpha male is.

Sorry, couldn't resist. Still can't get over that.

In the future, they'll need to rename the sport. I have 8 year olds in youth football that beg for that drill (or a version of it) at the end of practice...every day.
